I knew of a mentor who was colorblind who worked at Disney as a Background painter in the 90s. The colorblind artists had better grasp on values, atmospheric perspective, and depth than those who see the full range of color. Colorblind artists have better black and white illustrations than anyone else.

I have tritanomaly other colors are effected to people for get things like even though its Blue and Yellow we can have a hard time with purples and greens too XD cause green is made from blue and yellow high contrast stuff is also hard T_T I have a color app Color Grab thats nice it tells me all the colors names and hex value and you can save it ^^

Honestly, in all of my years of watching art videos on how to ACTUALLY improve, I’d say this is probably one of the best. All those tutorials on how to draw “that one really specific eye in that really specific pose in that really specific angle” don’t help you much in the long run at all. Truly, I really appreciate the realistic viewpoint on the matter, as well as the instructions of “learn how to study” (because honestly, 14 years of school never taught me that), as well as the starting place of learning the fundamentals and all of the incredible resources on how/where to learn them is really helpful. So thank you for making this video. Truly helped me out.

biggest thing that had me held up for a while was the fact that it generally doesn't take much time to get a good grasp of the basics. Apparently just 15 - 20 hours is enough for you to be 'serviceable' with something, but for you to master it at a world class level, at least 10,000 hours. Keep this in mind when you practice with something and it doesn't feel like you're going anywhere fast - you're progressing, and that's what counts.

I went to an art school at a state university, and I firmly believe that taking other art forms helps your art form grow. I know that sounds crazy, but I saw many art students that were painters, and were pissed that they had to take ceramics. As they began to work, they became amazing sculptor’s. Never knock other forms!

Say that again!! As a perfectionist, I thought Charcoal and watercolors where ,mediums I would never use! After I had to reach 42 years old, to see my mistake. I grabbed some charcoal sticks that I had laying around my studio for years and gave them a try! The result blew my mind! I fall in love with charcoal and that, lead me to get my 1st watercolor set, to try that medium too and now I use both, as much as other mediums ,if not more!! We all have to try, as many mediums as we can!! It has a lot of benefits and in the same time, we never know what we will like or not, if we don't actually try. I'd never thought I would like charcoal, neither watercolors and I was 100% wrong!!

I've been drawing for my whole life and I didn't realize that I was holding myself back so much by neglecting to learn this stuff. I'm gonna take the time to learn all this stuff, so then hopefully my skill will start matching the amount of time I've been making art

Holy hell, honestly. One mistake I think I'm doing as an artist is basically just telling myself that I need to be inclined or devoted to learning the fundamentals/principles of art for days, weeks etc. Where I would research, study and basically try to iron out the creases in my abilities. And then suddenly just randomly, I'd slowly procrastinate and not do it anymore after a month. Which kinda is a super hard and bad habit I have, since once I return to doing the same thing again, I would basically forget what I even managed to learn and relearn it all over again. Happened to me countless and many times enough, that I think it's the main reason why I set myself back for improving. I'm here again to relearn some of the basics, and I swear. This'll be the last time I would ever procrastinate. New Year's resolution for me, if I ever want to be a cartoonist.

Gotta get an ever changing interest into art. Something you are working towards AND find fun to work at. Sounds impossible but it’s a million times better at getting you motivated than a long term goal that’s far away.

It's funny, I've grown up among artsy friends who all want to make a career out of it. I also love art (drawing really) though for me it's a hobby, I'm a scientist at heart. However, art is really a backup because I'm hugely into cartoons. Still, I hope to one day bring my art skills into my science. I'm going to study Marine Biology and Oceanography in September, and so perhaps I can draw as well as take photographs of what I see in the field. Ultimately though, I just enjoy drawing, and for me that's ok.

For composition I would follow film examples if you’re feeling lost or confused. Hitchcock especially was fantastic at communicating through imagery! There are loads of fantastic videos on successful shot composition too.

Great video . I have being drawing since from I remember umm 11years old , I’m 30 now . Never really practiced but it was more of me copying what I was drawing . That was / is my comfort zone . Copying . It’s difficult for me to do things from my imagination unless it’s something basic like an apple or maybe a shoe . I’ve tried drawing goku many times without reference and it a no go , the image doesn’t stick even tho I clearly know who goku is . Simply put , practice does make a difference. Just recently I bought a sketch pad and a set of pencils and I can tell that my understanding of how lines work with length width and depth plus values is much much great than a few years ago. Can’t wait to see my progress at the end of the year

nobody draws from imagination. And you don't learn that way either!! The key here is to use REFERENCES!!! That's the most important art tip ever. Always use references. Watch out, that doesn't mean copying, or tracing. Pick your reference image and break it down. Don't copy the lines, but imagine the SHAPE under the lines. Circles, triangles, cilinders. Learn about construction.. if you don't do that, you'll never improve. And when you go into drawing something, ALWAYS construct the whole thing first. Don't focus on details! Just the basic shapes. And references are key to all of this. To make your own drawings, mix references up! For example, let's say you want to draw Goku in a dynamic pose. Pick a reference for Goku (to see what he looks like! imagination is blurry and will always be). Then pick another reference of the pose you want, or you think looks cool. The web is full of those. You can even mix poses togheter if you understand anatomy and proportions enough! Break the pose, figure out the basic shapes. Then start adding details going over those. And then you slap Goku's hair, eyes and hair onto that. IT WON'T LOOK GOOD AT FIRST!!! That's ok! Just don't give up. We learn when we fail. The important thing is failing successfully! Come back to the drawing the next day and you'll have much more clarity. You'll notice mistakes, absorbe them, and don't repeat them. Don't focus too much on a single drawing! Do lots and do them quick! You'll learn much faster that way. And remember, drawing is supposed to be fun. Come back to your comfort zone when you feel bad or burned out, or stop drawing for a couple of days. But never give up! Your future self will be proud of you.

I'm a beginner, I want to proceed art as my hobby and it will also help my 3D Modeller Career too. This really helped and opened my eyes especially the excuses section, I can relate to lot of them, but I guess it's time to shut them down and just start practicing and understanding the art and it's technical aspect, Thank you for this insight of Art Fundamentals! Amazing work man! Practising is important and Auto Art can help to relax mind.

Figure study for All it's Worth was my gateway drug into art and my comfort zone for a long time. I drew my friends as furries because I couldn't get faces right, then I drew women in artsy poses (because that's a lot of Loomis's book. I had to add clothes because I was in junior high-high school). I definitely relate to the comfort zone, although it has changed over the years. No one wants to draw what their bad at and be disappointed when it's just ok or not right. "It's not wrong, it's my style" is also a personal pet peeve. I think when art teachers discourage anime they mean the student needs to understand real anatomy and fundamentals, not just copy a style, a variation on "it's not wrong, it's my style."

This is a great video, thanks for sharing. Looking forward to seeing the others. I think that there is something missing from your pros and cons chart for reference drawing, which is that with a reference you're forced to draw what's there rather than what you want to be there. So if I want to draw a particular figure, I'm going to need to deal with aspects which I find challenging, and ultimately there's an ideal - in the form of the original - with which to compare my work. Whereas if I draw from my imagination, I can if I wish choose an aspect that I'm comfortable with. I see countless drawings from the imagination where the artist has repeatedly used the same aspect, placed features in exactly the same place, made the proportions exactly the same - basically drawn the same thing over and over with maybe different hair or clothing. And I've seen artists who are very accomplished at, say, landscape, suddenly produce something *really* awkward because they've been commissioned by a friend to reproduce an urban scene from a holiday photo. I don't think there's a 'better' way to draw, but I do think that your magnificent pros/cons chart was a tad biased, if you don't mind me saying so 😁

I know this vid is 5 years old and probably no one will see this but if you're a beginner and want to learn anatomy as simple as possible , then i recommend The Morpho Anatomy series. Although the series is not "complete" but it has enough material to get you started and possibly move on to the book he recommended. It has a lot of drawings to visualized what the book is trying to convey. It is amazing in my opinion as a visual learner.

This video is great. It took me years and years of trial and error to independently stumble upon and settle with the Gurney and Loomis books as gold standards. I never studied Hampton's anatomy, but I will now.

That was really informative..I googled my a** off for fundamentals and no ones offering a complete package..However I managed to download some Books online and started my Journey..Cant wait for the next episode....

Last 2020 I was extremely motivated. But the covid quarantine hit, so I got lazy, then I lost my job. Now I'm motivated more than ever to improve, as I feel like this is the universe telling me to follow the right path

2 years late lol, but just wanted to say that i have always been interested in getting into drawin and always had and still kinda have that first excuse of not being good enough. But now that i have gotten more into it and am slowely starting to build up a routine I realized i have absolutely 0 clue what I am doing or just in general what to do and how to do things. So this video has been some great help, but i am definetely going to be looking into getting some of those books so I can just get a better understanding of things in general.

since im takin an intro to art class, (starting tomorrow), didnt get chance to last year, i wanted to look at different stuff/videos as im someone that has always been drawin since young and pretty good surface level, and digital, BUT when it comes to 10/10 knowledge i fall a lil flat so thank you for all this i cant get the idea of what needs to be done but i tended to not fully do it as im lackin in depth info, so this helped, noted
