Just passed mod 1 today, I have my mod 2 test next Tuesday. I went out to Triumph West Yorkshire and purchased myself a 765rs last week. I’ve never had experience with bikes up until last month when I did my cbt, but I’ve bought the st triple because I want to be able to grow into the bike. I’m not getting the bike for bravado or to look good or show off. I’m getting it as it’s a personal thing and no other bike jumped out at me. Personally I couldn’t imagine anything worse than buying a bike and realising 6-12 months down the line you’ve out grown it or don’t enjoy it and what a waste of money that is. Who cares if I won’t get the full potential out of the bike for the first year or so, I’ll have the biggest smile on my face anyway just being out on it.

In reality! you can't even get the full potential out of a 390 duke on the road. The roads are way over populated and crap. Just go steady lads, enjoy learning and stay clear of groups rides for a bit.

If its a new bike then you can use the run in period to carefully get used to it... after 500 miles I would advise still taking it very easy ! Explore the higher rev ranges on nice wide , straight roads before you start pinging 2nd gear on twisty stuff ...

Test rode the trident the other day, really enjoyed it. Got back to the dealer and he convinced me to go out on the street triple 765 RS. What a mistake...strangely I felt far more comfortable on it. Loved the ease of tyre angle initiation, quickshifter amazing and sounds great even standard. informative video however i did get a 2015 STR 675 as my first (big) bike just over 2 years ago and i dont regret it at all (it is toned down from the RS and more so than the 765 RS) If you are able to ride within your limits then it is fine as long as you dont have an unexpected twitch or twist of the wrist. the advantage was that when i felt more confident i did not have to buy a new bike to experience more thrills.

Coming from having the RS, I agree - the whole street range great for *confident* beginners but you really need to be able to limit yourself or get a bike that isn't as powerful.. You certainly won't get bored if you spring for the model with extra rider modes! Just don't put it in anything but road mode for the first few weeks and its very manageable.

I passed my DAS last year and bought the RS as a first bike. Totally agree with what you’re saying, I had 125 when I was younger and also road motor x on track from 14 to 17 years old (I’m now 47) I’ve done approximately 5k miles since passing my test and I’m currently doing IAM riding for the last couple of months. I’m still leaning the bike and have been nowhere near the limits of it but I think it’s a perfect bike to grow into if you have respect for it and what it can do…maybe it’s an age thing over experience, but every time I ride it I fall in love with it a little more…perfect bike for me IMO 👍

I would say someone like you will very likely get on fine with a Street... but even with your background as you say you still nowhere near the limits of the bike and that's my point. Beginners get the Street and spend all that money on a bike and don't even no how to use it. But yes you mention age and that is always a bonus as you will respect it.... a 24 year old is going to be a nightmare on this

The issue I have with the topic of "beginner bike" is that bikes like the STrs/r are absolutely fine for beginners in my opinion because they all what I call a well mannered bike, something like an xsr900 or mt09 that are brutal on the throttle are what I would consider not beginner friendly, the STrs is very easy to ride in normal conditions, i don't feel egged on like I did with the xsr900, even the mt07 is front wheel up happy, but it's mostly down to personality of the rider, give an idiot a 125 and it will get binned very quickly, if you are looking at the STrs then you most likely have track days in mind in which case some offer rider training, even a good advanced course is a good day out. Going into a corner too hot is due to inexperience not the bhp of the bike but some bikes like the STrs will be a little more forgiving than say a stock mt07 that wobbles through corners.

i used Hideout leathers a couple of years ago to fix a jacket, friendly and did a good job - it is tricky getting leathers that fit 'everywhere', no one is standard size, if you want something that fits broad shoulders/frame, then the manufacturers think you will be podgy in the middle, they need to introduce a 'broad shoulders and slim fit size'! - loving the sound of your exhaust btw..

Hey rye, how you doin mate? Your argument is valid. Just looking for your prospective on someone like me. i’ve drove 150’s, 200’s and also a royal enfield 500 for years. I’m confident on them ,ofcours they are no where near like big sport bikes , i can handle medium high speeds like 100 to 130kmph, thats the fastest i’ve ever been on a bike. Now i’ve test rided this bike, it felt easy to drive on slower speeds on road mode. Took the bike to 130kmph and it went like knife across the block of smooth butter, that in few seconds on 3rd and 4th gear and slowed myself then because i was still driving in busy traffic and still it didn’t felt like i was going that fast, if i wished i could have twisted the throttle even further more and fly away. Look i know i’m not experienced like you are or anywhere near to use all the goodies that this bike has, i’m not even as good as you are at corners, my cornering skills are still like very basic, i can’t go down that low to ground on corners and am also afraid to practise it on public roads because i don’t want to fall and accidently get ran over by some car on the corner . Yes i do have options to get lower displacement bikes like trident 660 or kawasaki z600 , but its not like those bikes are any cheap either they are still premium bikes not like other cheap bikes like 150’s or royal enfields. I wanna get a bike which i buy once and atleast don’t change it for next 3 years and even keep it when i get my next bike. But Can i take this route? i get this bike, In early days i try to take it slow with the bike in rain and road mode. Practise it on medium high speeds, work on my cornering and gradually slowly when i feel like the roads are clear and are right for me to go faster, i do that. And just don’t rush things, so yeah i’m asking to develop my skills on this bike and some day be able to reach its full potential. What do you think about it? I’ll love to know your opinion on this, can this be done? And also i’ve considered speed twin as an option, Which is less powerfull but still packs 100 horses.

  • @BikesofRye

    @BikesofRye

    3 жыл бұрын

Hey thanks for the question - I will be honest and in my opinion based on what you have said you will be a long way off getting the best out of the Street. Yes you can ride it slowly but you can do that with any bike. You mentioned your cornering skills are very basic and that you're afraid to practice on the roads and that suggests to me that the street will just far exceed your capabilities. In fact you will have so much more fun on a bike with circa 80bhp. As for the likes of the Trident being as expensive...in the U.K the Trident is over £3000 cheaper which is a significant amount of money... the bikes you should consider instead are the Trident, MT07 or maybe the CB650R/CBR650R. Take something like these bikes for a couple of years, properly enjoy riding and then level up.... when you go to the street you will enjoy the bike from the get go and appreciate it even more so

@@BikesofRye yeah mate you make sense, street triple rs might seem easy to ride initially but is a bike which has lot more hidden under its cowel. Its nearly a powerful sports bike tuned to be easily ridden at lower speeds, it becomes a completely different beast soon as you hit its mid range, i still remember going 70 to 130 in a blink. My skills don’t match with its power yet, and practising on it won’t be a smart decision because if i drop it, i’m gonna cry like a baby, its just too expensive and yeah i’am not gonna have fun or appreciate its power initially because i won’t be able to use it to its fullest. Then i’m gonna be stuck driving it at lower speeds afraid of it to kill me at any moment. Same goes for speed twin my other option, that bike is a beast too, it might not have that powerful mid range like street triple but its lower range is insanely powerful which is gonna be hard for me control at slower speeds. I’ve heard of its throttle response which is real light and bike takes off instantly even at slower speeds. Which is left is me with lesser displacement bikes. I like trident, mt 07 has good feedback too but i’m not a fan of it looks, i think i’m gonna choose between them, cb650r is too expensive for what it offers. Anyway chears for making time to reply mate, have fun riding and wish you luck during this pandemic, Stay safe.

I recently got a 2020 RS after not owning a street bike for 10 years but have been riding motocross. I find it super easy to ride, I actually find the motor alittle tame, it's plenty fast enough especially for the riding I do but after a day of riding I thought maybe I should have bought the speed triple instead, but I didn't want to pay the extra cash

  • @BikesofRye

You are used to punchy power from the motocross bike 😉 - the previous speed wasn't any quicker than the street to be honest though that's changed with the new 1200RS but yes as you say quite a significant amount of extra money, running costs and insurance to pay

The power in these engines are in the higher rev range. After you run it in try riding in the 7K and above range in the first 2 or 3 gears. You'll soon find out where the fun is. I'm not game enough to go much beyond that myself in full rip mode. You'll probably find the wheelie control kicking in. If you're after more low down punch try playing with the gear ratios. I'm thinking of giving it ago myself.

@@benfarr6049 hi, not to sure about any 125 two strokes, but in comparison the power this can produce frightens the hell out of me. Pretty sure when Rye was doing his little demonstration of the bikes ability he was only in 3rd or 4th gear just about to go into the madness power level (about 60% throttle). If you have a bit of a look on KZread there is some good videos about the ecu tuning of these bikes. It explains lots about the fuel mapping etc. The lower range is tuned to meet the Euro 5 requirements. Above that range the amount of throttle response is much more aggressive. Tuning these bikes can definitely make a difference. The RS is tuned more towards track use so you'll find it more responsive when ridden more aggressively.

It’s my favorite bike I’ve ever ridden. Rides amazing. As for a beginner as this is their first motorcycle I would not get this bike. No beginner should have a bike with over 100hp, even if this bike makes you feel confident when you ride, it’s too much power for a newcomer. Better off buying a used 300 or 500 and when you’re comfortable and need more speed than get the brand new bike of your dreams.

Not really a beginner bike but it can be done, it all depends on the rider and their level of maturity. The most important thing is to have the proper kit for riding first before purchasing that expensive exhaust. And to take it a step further, before new riders go and spend that money on that flashy new exhaust, how about investing that money in some riding courses to improve your skill level. That goes for any bike really, invest in yourself first before worrying about how cool your bike sounds.

@@BikesofRye Im not disagreeing with you at all. That is the better way to go about learning 100%. All I was saying is there are to many guys that start off on bigger bikes and worry about tricking out the bike, when they should spend that money on improving their skills. Absolutely no one should start on a liter bike (but it happens). One of my favorite bloggers "motojitsu" made that mistake back in the day and almost killed himself, but he learned from it and now he is one of the better riders I have seen.

I'm guilty. After a test ride I decided 2 things. 1. I needed one of these bikes. And 2. It needed a loud obnoxious exhaust to extract all that sweet sound of that tripple engine. I think the exhaust actually arrived before the bike. Fortunately I gained lots of the training and experience in my previous riding years as I progressed thru my licence. I'm guessing that is the point Ryan is trying to make. This is definitely not a beginner bike, it's something that you move towards as your abilities and skill levels grow. Bikes like this are way more capable most of us average riders. Especially on the roads. They require total respect.

I don’t think they’re great bikes for beginners either. I’ve owned lots of different bikes from Shadow 500 to R1 & CBR1000RR and now a Stripple 675R and it’s a monster for what it is. Very torquey down low where a new rider could get themselves in trouble. Throttle control and finesse are things that come with time and not a skill easily attained especially if you start off on something so aggressive. My gf doesn’t think I’d be a bad bike for her cause of how I handle it an I’m like uh I’ve been riding for 15+ years and have developed the skills to make the bike seem “reasonable”.

I am certain that a lot of people who are drawn to fast bikes are drawn to them because of the TFT displays and the build quality, not so much the fact that it can out-accelerate a veyron. What do you think of the new Trident?
