thank you so much!!! a lot of it is so analogous to hand knitting that it doesn't feel as complicated as it looks, if you're already a hand knitter! like the "e-wrap cast-on" i do at the beginning is basically just a backwards-loop cast-on, picot hem uses k2tog just like with hand knitting, you decrease/increase in mostly the same way. i think the biggest challenges will be 1) fixing things when they go wrong bc it seems like the hugest pain in the ass to get all the stitches back on the needle without dropping them bc they're so teeny (and also you can have mechanical failures with the machine itself). and 2) you have to be REALLY precise about gauge and do all of your thinking up front about shaping etc because you can't try anything on as you go!!

this is so amazing!! I am a hand knitter and got a knitting machine in November but I did not take to it as naturally as you did lol! after a lot of replacing parts, frustration, dropped stitches, and aching shoulders, I decided to store it away. I will have a knitting machine era but it is not now 😂

i'm so lucky that my friend replaced the parts and got it all in working order before she passed it on to me! i'm also boycotting my machine right now after tons of dropped stitches & aching shoulders too after trying to make some tops using recycled cashmere yarn on it (turns out it was too fragile and would randomly break and drop all my stitches 😩). when it works it's like magic and when it doesn't it feels like absolute tortureeee

@@starcrossedknits fully agreed and completely understandable!! i really think knitting machines are optimal with durable fibers, such as synthetics, acrylics. which makes sense both historically and also the way they are even used today for mass manufactured knit garments. but definitely is a different style. I think for now I prefer to make slowly and by hand! machine knitting is very neat and I love to watch others do it!

This was so interesting to me as I have thought that I would like to get a knitting machine too. I have always wondered how long it takes to get to the point where you can actually make a top and if it is much shorter in time than hand knitting. Best wishes from a Canadian knitting podcaster!

it's definitely much faster!! but honestly when things don't go well it is SO much more frustrating than fixing an issue with handknitting haha. but i think if you have a larger gauge machine it gets less frustrating, because part of the problem for mine is that the stitches are SO teeny that they can be tough to pick back up if they drop. i've heard LK 150 is a good mid-gauge and less expensive (tho still expensive) machine for beginners!

This looks amazing!! Fantastic job! Also, please take care of your back/shoulders while crafting. I'm currently laid up in bed because I went too hard cross-stitching and messed up my back, when I could be playing with my new knitting machine :(

omg poor you, i hope you recover quickly!!! i've been trying to be much more mindful of it lately and doing stretches and strength exercises and taking lots of breaks! it is tough to have so many hobbies that all put strain on the same body parts :(

i tried it out for the first time when i got the machine about a month ago! knitted a few really tragic swatches, then the navy top i unwound in this vid (wasn't a great fit and the side seams were really puckered), and then finally figured it out with the black top i'm wearing. just watched a bunch of tutorials! i've been hand-knitting for the last 3 years and designing my own knits for the last ~1.5 though so i have experience in that sense, but not much with the machine yet!

You're a natural. It takes many people much longer, based on what I've seen and heard. One day I intend to get a knitting machine. When I have a bit of time in case it takes me a while to learn 🙂@@starcrossedknits

i do think having hand-knitting and design experience helps you out a ton though! like you already know the structure of the garment and various techniques, it's just a matter of translating them to the machine. also i'm VERY lucky that i inherited it from a friend who loves researching stuff and working on mechanical things because i'm not sure i would've had the patience to assemble all the parts in working order if she hadn't given it to me that way!!! i hope you do get one someday and have a ton of fun learning it too!!

where do you get your coned yarn?

my friend who gave me the machine also gave me all the coned yarn with it so i'm not sure where she bought it, but the brand is Tamm Perle and it's mercerized cotton! seems like if you google there are some sites that sell it online!
