    Great guide for new players. Very abridged, but solid. Also for new players, I *highly* recommend just experimenting with all the weapons and skills your class has as you level. Leveling is the best time to get a chance to use a lot of that stuff and learn the intricacies of how it all works.

    This is definitely a good thing for new players to know; while the elite specializations can be powerful, they are not necessary. Players can do quite well with base game builds and gear. A couple I still play with base game builds are my Warrior and Engineer. The warrior is set up for dual axes and shouts, and originally used soldier stats. I used certain traits and glyphs along with 100% up time on fury to get most of my crit. It's a tanky build that still does a lot of damage. Very easy to play. I used mostly Soldier stats originally with berserker weapons and I think a couple Berzerker stat pieces in the jewelry, though later I upgraded the Soldier pieces to Wanderer stats in HoT. For the second weapon slot I usually switch off between rifle or longbow depending on the situation. I usually like to have a ranged weapon available on my melee characters for those times you need to back off for a bit to recover some health. The engineer is a condi build using mostly the pistols and the flamethrower, with the flame turret and rocket boots skills thrown in partially for the belt gadget skills that go with them. Been a while since I actually looked at the trait line on mine, but it was probably fairly similar to the one you showed. I used a combo of Carrion and Rampager stats in the base game, though later I went to Vipers.

    I played GW2 around 7 years ago and hit max level at the time and 90% map completion, but I never got really into the endgame. Now I'm finally getting back to it and hoping I can do that! Everytime in those years when I thought about GW2 I really wanted to play Ventari Revenant, as I LOVE the tablet thing. I decided against playing that now, though, as the rest of the class doesn't interest me that much, sadly. Maybe I will just play my old main again and go for druid, as I love that as well. I am trying out Guardian right now, but it somehow feels weird to play. I also really like Mesmer, but I've read a lot about how difficult it is, and I don't think I'm good enough for it yet xD

I have ended up played a dam necro(80) but I just cant get into it and it feels like this when I try other classes but end up having to use a certain weapon that makes the playstyle something I didnt like. Like I want a P/P thief for open world or a ranger that actually uses a bow, etc. Like a thief using a scepter??? It is so hard to enjoy this game with so little direction.

    @k.v.7681

    If anything you're better off not knowing other mmoos in my opinion. GW2 is so alien in many ways that havinga lot of mmo experience can be a hindrance at first (at least that was the case for me). GW2 isn't exactly hard. It's more of a "lab mind requirement" thing, in a way, due to the lack of tutorial, as said above. One big practical thing: try things out, and to do so, go to the pvp arena area. Just the general lobby. You don't need to pvp if it's not your thing, but it allows you to fool around with skills on manequins as a lvl 80 before committing fully to a class

    I've come to switch off as soon as I hear the word "meta". I'm interested in GW2 mostly because of the class/skill differences (currently doing NW for the same reason) and you're right in that vets move right past being new and go for efficiency and optimization leading many down a path of no return and no fun. It becomes more a need to fit in than to just enjoy the gameplay so new players will ask what to do, and then spend many hours grinding up their level so they can conform and not be criticized. I think this is what drives many people to just play solo these days.

    F1 is damage, F2 is healing, F3 is protection. When in F1 just learn what each button does ie 5 will imbue your nearby allies attacks with fire, 3 will group enemies together. Solo stuff just use 4, 3, then spam out 2 and 1. Be sure to dump them fast as you can't refresh the trait, I think it's called Inspiring Virtues, if you are inside the tome. Only resets on mob death. In F2, your 5 should be used first so it makes the allies get healed for more, 3 is the regen iirc. In F3, don't use 2 unless you want to taunt the mobs onto you. If you are in a mass zerg, just spam your pages on everything. In general you really shouldn't feel the need to 'I'll use this when I really need to' as that moment won't likely come. SPAM SPAM SPAM.

    Man I always played my own way since 7 years ago in GW2 because I hated the "Use metabuilds", but I think GW2 gives a lot of freedom anyway, so if you find a good comunity you will surely enjoy it and they will tell you to play however you like, or at least give you advice of some combos or useful skill/traits that would help you instead of forcing you to "A build".

    If you've unlocked all three of your selected specialisations, then you should start using those hero points to unlock the rest of the core class (so unlock all remaining skills and specialisations), as once you hit level 80 you'll gain access to elite specialisations (basically sub-classes, Ranger has Soulbeast which allows you to merge with your pet for a number of benefits, and Druid gives you a transformation ability that is good at healing and supporting your allies), and you need the full core class unlocked to start unlocking your elite specialisations. I wouldn't worry about having enough skill points eventually, there's *more* than enough skill points in the game to unlock your core class and all three elite specialisations (the Heart of Thorns elite spec, the Path of Fire elite spec, and the upcoming End of Dragons elite spec), with points probably remaining to unlock an eventual 4th elite specialisation, if one comes. By just leveling your character all the way to level 80, you'll be given enough points to unlock the full core class, any points you earn through hero challenges in the base game maps will go towards unlocking most of your first elite specialisation, then you can earn more points through Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire hero challenges to finish unlocking your first elite specialisation, fully unlock your second elite specialisation, and get enough points to be able to fully unlock your third once End of Dragons launches next year.

    i leveled several necros in those 9 years and minions are really bad, unless you want to make a minion tank build for open world only, you never gonna use minions after level 40-50, the only usefull one is the elite skill, the best way to level necro is with tons of AOE on wells and staff

    My new player experience was playing P/P Core Thief, lol. i def remember the step up in difficulty going from Core to Heart of Thorns zones. Made it work but i have a lot of experience in RPGs, wouldn't recommend that for someone new to the genre. I'd say in general every classes can work well for a new player, only 3 i'd avoid at first is Thief, Mesmer and Ele. Also only pick Engi if you're really looking to sit down and learn some of the game's deeper mechanics like combo fields.

    Thief and deadeye has been great for me, I love short bow and the dagger and pistol combo for thief, but Really love deadeye when you can get it. Not much in AoE but damn that single target damage is great, and you are a legit sniper :P Eli is also fun, its a bit like a druid from WoW in a way, only forced into a weapon set for the duration of combat rather than a element or a form. Had loads of fun with them.

    not really on the core specs. With the elite specs where raiding came in, there are tank specs and healing specs - chronomancer tanks usually. scourge, tempest, healbrand, druid, etc healers. For raiding, druid is taken as the "healer" because they heal and more (boons, cc etc) and beginner groups might take an offhealer.

  • @jcm2606

    @jcm2606

    Worth mentioning that tanking isn't like other games, where you explicitly manage agro to keep the boss from attacking your allies. In GW2, agro management depends on the specific fight, as some bosses will target the person with the most toughness (a stat that gives a flat reduction on incoming power/direct damage), some will target the closest or farthest person, some will target the lowest person, some will target the person who is doing the specific mechanic for the fight, some will target the person doing the most damage, and some will even just target random people. Because of this, a lot of fights don't really have a tank role, while others may have a tank role that involves the tank doing certain mechanics so they're the ones the boss targets.

    Liked the small bit you did early about what "skill gates" there are unique to each class where you talked about warriors needing sustain, mesmers on timing, thief with positioning, etc. Would love for you to expand on those thoughts. I'm at a point where I'm seeing my strengths and weaknesses more clearly and so I'm trying to find the best opportunities to choose the right classes and builds for the kind of player I'm becoming.

  • @Vallun

    @Vallun

    3 жыл бұрын

    Because the classes can vary so greatly by build, such as a fresh air ele is about timing, a lightning rod ele is on combos, a fire ele is on rotation, and so on, you may see vast differences in playstyles, but at the core idea yes the classes differ. Maybe you could give me your preferences and I can suggest you a class/build.

    The three best classes for a new player IMO would probably be: - Necromancer. Very tanky, good damage (Reaper for power/direct damage, Scourge for condi/over-time damage), self-sufficient (the best class in the game for a solo player, also excels in uncoordinated groups in group content), very easy to learn. - Guardian. Great damage (both Dragonhunter and Firebrand support both power and condi damage and are solid at both, with Dragonhunter being excellent at power damage), very versatile (Dragonhunter is an excellent power DPS spec, Firebrand is excellent as a healer spec, and very good as both a power and a condi DPS spec), lots of group support (good in group content), fairly easy to learn (especially Dragonhunter). - Ranger. Good damage (Soulbeast is solid for both power and condi damage), good healing (Druid is good as a healing spec, but doesn't offer as much group support and secondary benefits as a Firebrand built for healing), fairly versatile (can pick two different pets for different situations, which is especially useful as a Soulbeast), the pet can make survival a bit easier, too. Warrior is also worthy of a mention, as it's pretty good for both power and condi damage through the Berserker elite specialisation, and it'll always have a role in groups thanks to its banners, but that's really about it, as it's honestly a fairly mediocre class in terms of what it brings to the table. Pretty good but not the best damage, a role that no other class can fill, but it doesn't bring any additional group support, it's not as versatile as the other three listed classes, not as solo-friendly, not as easy to survive on. Still worth having one, but I'd maybe focus on one of the other three I've listed. Beyond those 4, the other classes still absolutely have a place (with Revenant honestly being kinda similar to Guardian/Warrior in that it's versatile and fills a role in the group that no other class can fill as well as Rev can), but they're harder to approach as a new player, and so I don't think they're a good pick for a new player. Again, worth having, but maybe just focus on one of the 4 classes listed above, while you're still learning the game. If you're interested in actual gameplay details and how each of the classes plays, don't hesitate to ask!
