Funny! I play guitar and bass, and I always loved to learn drums too. The first exercise I would try to do (by instinct) was right the first you described! Because I noticed this "coordination problem" between right food and right arm as you showed us. Thanks for these gold videos, I think I'll learn the basics in less time with your help!

It took me all day to figure out correct terminology to ask about this. I've only been playing in a church band (Praise & Worship songs). Never touched drums but always wanted to, wasn't sure if I could at 45 yo. But this old dog still learning those new tricks! With help of your videos, I feel like I've had a strong start. We've played 5 or 6 songs for church and received lot of positive comments. I love Mercyme but several of their songs have a snare or kick drum between the hi hat hits. Everytime I practiced those songs, I had these same problems. I'm going to start practicing these exercises and see how it goes. I signed in for free trial but just can't afford the lessons right now but hopefully will at some point. Jared, you are the coolest ever. Thanks man. I'll give you an update when I've mastered it or if I'm just ready to quit. - - - Mike Darnell

A great song to learn to play along with is "Ticket to Ride". I set my e-drums to play a tambourine when I close the high hat. This song really forces you to have independence of both feet, and playing both hands together, other than the bridge. Took me a while to get it right, but once you get it, it's a lot of fun. Ringo may not have been the greatest technical wizard, but his grooves are great for learning how to play for the song. I think as a beginner, he's a good role model to follow. I also find AC/DC and Bad Company are cool to play along with doing a simple rock beat, and you can slowly add in your own fills. Good luck to all beginners like me!

Metronome and counting will make a world of difference. Eventually muscle memory takes over a bit, but as a beginner, I have only gotten better by counting with an app called "Drum Beats +" - you can set it to count in, and it's not just a metronome, it has a section called basic training where you hear the actual drums playing, can slow or speed it up. So you match yourself to it. Been helpful for me, along with these types of tutorials.

I've played piano/keyboard most of my life (62). Was never great but learned chords and played off of them while singing. Got my first e-drum kit about 2 years ago, an Alesis Dm7x which really isn't very good. Last week I upgraded to a Roland td-17kvx. What a difference! But since I started playing the drums, I've hardly touched my keyboard. I love trying to play along with my favorite songs. I need to work on adding in different fills at this point. I tend to play the same groove with every song. But drums are a whole lot of fun, frustrating at times, but still a blast!

Excellent tutorial my 9 year old won't listen to my advice so I said. There is a kit in the garage knock yourself out and when you want to learn something come and see me. 20 minutes later after sounding like he was building a shed, he had got bored and wanted to learn something. I sat him down and said watch and listen to what this guy is saying. 10 minutes later he's back in the garage and playing 8th notes on the hats quarter notes on the bass drum and half notes on the snare. I think he has caught the bug. ROCK 'n' ROLL!

Is it bad that I didn't see the kicks between notes as difficult at all starting out? I saw it as the next note in the sequence, not sandwiched in between 2 other notes, so I just moved x2 speed to do the kick, then x2 speed to hit the note right after, then back to x1 speed. It wasn't a smooth "tap tap tap(kick in the middle) tap" in my head, the last tap would be put on hold and gone back to after the kick, but still got the timing decently.
