Beginner Chainmail - Byzantine Bracelet

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is your intro to chainmail. The Byzantine weave is very popular and most of all, EASY...perfect for the beginner. This video is geared for the total beginner with lots of great info and if you already know how to open and close jump rings, click on the link that will take you right to the weave.
Spend some time practicing opening and closing the rings. I show you clearly how to do each step, and when I'm out of view, I'm only looking at my ring to make sure it is together properly. I repeat the steps many times so you can follow along.
I hope you like this video and you find it helpful. Chainmail is addicting and fun. I am in no way a chainmail artist so don't ask me about the rings and different weaves 'cause I don't know. but I have done many different weaves with fabulous results. Most chainmail suppliers are more than helpful with their infinite knowledge. If you come across a supplier that is rude to you, let me know. I'll fill them in.
The rings I like best for this weave are 18 gauge 5/32". I used 18 gauge 3/16" in bright aluminum in this video which gives you a more open and looser weave.
Thank you so much for watching and supporting my channel.

I have only made but a few crocheted beaded bracelets. I'm more the crocheter/knitter, but I have been wanting to try something new and I stumbled upon this video after seeing some jewelry that was made like this said bracelet. And after watching this video I know I can do this! I never knew how to open or close the rings without damaging them before. Thank you for this very informative video!

I had done this years ago, and forgotten the technique. This was an awesome refresher, and you have some nice tricks as well. Where I kept getting hung up is explained from 19:30 to 23:30. I was a little frustrated at the zoom level initially, but you managed to manipulate the rings in enough different directions that your process eventually became clear after rewatching that section 2-3 times. Nicely done.

When I make Byzantine weave in silver I use 7.0 mm in 12 gauge, 5It takes a lot more time, but the finished product is a pleasure to wear. For soldering, I use fine silver, so I don't need to pickle.5mm in 14 gauge, 4.5mm in 16 gauge, 3.5mm in 18 gauge and 3.0mm in 20 gauge. These sizes gives a close weave that moves great. I found that no matter how close I closed my rings, they irritated the skin, so I solder each ring as I weave them.

I've timed my work with both opening and closing rings before 'setting to work' and doing it as I go. The time 'saved' is negligible; it only _seems_ quicker because you're not having to open each ring as you go, so, that's myth busted. It's analogous to typing "u" to save 20 milliseconds on typing "you". As for the handedness of the opening and closing, I'm a lefty. My left hand twists forward and my right hand twists backward when opening, vice versa when closing. And I learned to weave left-handed. Not really a rule set in stone on that. Other than that, solid video. One thing I would add is is that on the chain nose/flat nose pliers setup, swap the straight chain nose for bent chain nose; you get a far higher degree of control with a more relaxed wrist angle and gain the benefit of being able to reach harder to reach spots in your weave without having to twist your wrist weirdly.

I still consider myself a beginner, and I can tell you that getting the hang of things at first can be VERY frustrating! BUT! Like any art, after a while your muscle memory kicks in and it starts to feel much more natural. Walking, riding bikes, drawing, knitting, etc. All very difficult until our muscles get accustomed to the motions :D Then it's something we can do without hardly thinking about it. If you haven't given it a try yet, you really should! Buy some cheap rings, like some anodized aluminum and give it a go. I suggest aluminum because the first time, you will mess up :D It's normal, so you won't be wasting the much more expensive steel or silver rings on practice!

Sharee Walls Hi Sharee...I don't really know, I usually just start making it and then measure around my wrist as I go. What you can do is measure the pattern section (the section after completing the steps before repeating) and count the rings. So there are 10 rings per section + 2 rings in between, and a section is 1/2" and you need 7" (before clasp). You would need @ 14 sections...10 x 14 + 30 (2 rings between each section) = 170 rings. This is just an example of the math. The size of the rings makes a difference. I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching.

I found this really hard to follow because of the small jump rings, I think it'd be a lot easier to see what you are doing if, for the purpose of demonstration, you used 12mm rings, also using different colour rings, for example bronze for the open rings and silver for the closed rings would make things clearer, but thanks for your efforts

Annette Weadock Hi Annette...making jump rings for chainmail is complicated. There is a science to it that you should research. I left it up to the professionals lol. Gauge, circumference, and aspect ratio all play a part in order for the rings to fit properly and depends on the particular weave.

It is the same movement over, and over again. Watch it while actually doing the weave and see if that helps. Where it was hard to see in one example, you will be able to see it in another. I hope this suggestion helps.

Hi Liz. Do you mend byzantine bracelets. I have my Gradmothers bracelet she passed away years ago and I love the wee silver bracelet would love to ware it but it has about five links missing. I put it in to a jewlers to be mended but they said the couldn't do it. I would try my self but I don't know the size of links to use. I would love to ware it instead of it being stuck in a jewlery box. Tom.

M J Creationz Ok...GOOGLE the size you want to convert...example: "5/32 inches to mm" and Google figures it out and gives you the measurements right away at the top of the results page. I just did it and just to make sure, I put in 3/4 inch to mm and it worked (I know that 3/4" is .75 and was easy to recognize for correctness).

You really should change the title of this video. This is not beginner friendly at all. I subscribed to your channel because your videos are great and you take the time to explain each step. I appreciate the (free!) instruction. But the title of this particular video is misleading. A beginner needs to be able to clearly see what is happening with each ring and due to the way this was shot, with the actual piece often dropping off camera and/or off focus, the beginner doesn't actually know what is going on. For someone who has already learned the technique, this video is fantastic. I think a few people tried to let you know this and you got a little frustrated with their comments. I can totally understand their frustration though, given the emphasis put on this being a tutorial for absolute beginners. I understand that you didn't initially set out to make a video but since you did release it as an instruction video please don't be offended by the critiques.

There is a kit at overstock.com, for $9.00 with good instructions. I did my first one that way, and it's held up for at least 3 years now. It's sterling silver plated over copper rings. And the silver hasn't tarnished or worn off. Just saying.

A person would need to watch a video before having a relevant opinion on it. I did just that. I also felt the need to share my reaction but discovered that I was unable to find the words necessary for an accurate portrayal via text. I find it unfortunate that you regard watching and commenting on your work as unkind. I could have moved on to the next video but I gave yours a chance. I also took the time to leave two comments as opposed to the typical, one. As for my opinion, I feel that you took entirely too long to explain everything. It were as if someone were playing a record of your voice at half-speed. The video is 30-something minutes of waiting for you to hurry up and get to the next step while you repeatedly move the chain out of the picture. That, coupled with your slow talking, forces people to sit here and watch every single second of your video because it is impossible to efficiently locate a specific segment of interest or summarize it. I frequently have difficulty expressing my thoughts in English, though, so I forgive you.

Nigel P. I appreciate all comments, and usually are constructive to give me an idea of what I did right or wrong. Your comments were just statements with nothing to offer. I was left to wonder what I did to make you so angry. I didn't plan this video. I had to make a bracelet for a customer and thought it a good opportunity to film it. This was meant for the absolute beginner with little to no experience in chain maille. I thought it a good idea to make it repetitive so the viewer wouldn't have to rewind to see a step. Now that you have explained to me what you find wrong with my video, perhaps I will put a link for the viewer to skip to the finishing of the bracelet. Thank you for watching and for letting me know what I could do better.
