A question for you… I recently bought a balafon and I love it , but it doesn’t have the buzzing sound. I saw that the gourds on the bottom only have a hole for the sound to go in but not a second set of holes for the sound to go out . Is it possible for me to drill a second hole and cover it with thin paper or thin plastic ?

Yes - for sure! You will totally be able to add the buzzing sound. You can drill 1-3 holes that are about 1 cm in diameter one the side of each gourd. Usually these holes face outwards on each side. Then cover with very thin paper (like cigarette paper) or very thin plastic. You can use glue or melted bee's wax to attach the paper or plastic. The glue should be applied to the surface of the gourd for about 0.5 cm around the edge of the hole. Stretch the paper or plastic tight with some steady pressure until it holds, and then and let dry. Later you can cut around the attached piece to round it out if you would like it to look clean. We recommend starting with one gourd to see how much buzz you would like. Then for other gourds you can adjust the number of holes, the size of the holes, and how tight the paper/plastic is attached. Good luck, and let us know how it goes :)

Also - usually you will drill larger or more holes on the bigger gourds and smaller holes and only 1-2 holes on the smaller gourds.

Hi Earthen King! This rhythm is from Burkina Faso/Mali. Great to hear that you are practicing balafon! Such an amazing instrument/tradition. You can check out more balafon videos on our main website: worldbeat101.com

Thank you so much for sharing. I have vibraphone and marimba settings on my Casio keyboard which are the closest that I might I ever come to playing a balafon. Yet I think it would be fun to attempt.
