Dont use these collars when its hot dogs need to open there mouths to cool off because they dont have sweat glands.

@@John-Anderson the dog has no problem panting with the majority of head collars. Head collars are NOT muzzles. They are not made to restrict the mouth opening or closing. Of course there are no doubt some bad ones out there but I am talking majority. And panting helps a dog regulate it's temp yes but the paws is where the sweat comes out. I appreciate your comment but it could be misleading.

Head halter was a game changer. My dog now walks without hurting herself. Highly effective. I believe we will be off of it and to normal walking pretty soon because of this.

I don't have to worry about weaning my dogs off of it. They both absolutely hated it! I'm going to switch to a halter style with the clip in the front. Hopefully that will be much less stressful.

I'd love to see a video (or just get your advice) about how to choose the right agility trainer! I've been working at a facility for "Foundations" class, but there are several different facilities in the Dallas, Texas area. How do you know if the methods that one facility/trainer uses are the best if you are looking to start competing? Especially for people who don't know what all of those accolades mean? Are there any indicators (like if they teach 2 on 2 off vs running contacts, or if they insist on crates during class vs having tie-outs along the fence?)? Would appreciate any insight!

Hi there, Laura! A lot of these decisions depend entirely on your dog. For example, a stopped contact may be a better choice for one dog, where a running contact is better for another. Maybe a stopped contact on the dog walk works best with your dog, but you need to use a stopped contact on the A-Frame. It's very dog dependent, and it's all about having great skills on each obstacle before trying to sequence too many obstacles together. Ideally, your dog would be able to lie down and wait quietly while you get instruction and plan your next training exercise. Sometimes people need to use a crate to allow their dog to wait close by until it's their turn to work. It's never a good idea to allow your dog to wander around or take obstacles independently. It's better for the class, your dog and you to have your dog waiting patiently for your next turn on the obstacle or course. I know that isn't very specific help, but choosing an agility trainer who is a great dog trainer and people trainer is really important. But they also need to be a coach. To motivate you and to help you to achieve whatever goals you may have in the sport!Hope this helps! ~Ken

I have a very people nervous american bully, I have only had her for 3 weeks, she's about a year old, she walks pretty well off lead and isn't half as fearful, but on lead she pulls like a manic (she takes flight) , I got her the head harness hoping it would help, but Omg impossible to walk at all, she bucks stops and pulls backwards, and that was in a quiet place with just us..

I’m guessing that the head collar will give you more control of the dog and allow you to manage the situation. But I would suggest you try to create similar situations that your dog may encounter and through repetition and guidance from his owner that behavior will stop eventually.

Which head collar is the best kind to get for a dog we rescued from the shelter who pulls so hard I cannot even walk her and she whines to visit with other dogs and then barks and lunges like she's gonna attack them. My current service dog was so abused before I rescued her that I couldn't even touch her. In the line of service dogs, she is my third one. She was about 4 months old and reminded me of a baby version of my second service dog. I fell in love with her almond eyes. She is shiba inu and american eskimo and boy can she be a pull-a-matic lol. I used a halti with her because she has really high prey drive and the abuse history. She will be 11 in May and about the only time I even need to show her the halti is if we are going to the duck park because she goes INSANE over squirrels!!! A few summers ago I ended up in PT because I ened up with a shoulder injury when she went for it.

Awwww all service dogs start somewhere 💜

I've used the head halter for about 3 months now but my 8 month goldendoodle continuously chews on it the whole walk. He doesn't necessary bite down on it but consistently does the chewing motion. Any advice on how to stop the chewing??

I've never heard of a head collar until today. I am looking at getting another dog. I currently have weak shoulders due to an injury last year and back to normal but just need to work on strengthening my shoulders. Would a head collar allow me to walk a new dog without risk of it pulling my shoulder? and a head collar would be a good tool as well to teach the dog to walk with me and not pull as well. The dog i am looking at getting is a medium sized dog and is almost 2 years old. Of course i will be choosing walking sites where there will be less reason to pull such as were other dogs will be. But just wanted to know if this would also be a good tool to make it safer for my shoulder should the dog have a reason to pull.

We have learned that the Gentle Leader is better for the dog. The nose loop doesn’t slide on the dog’s muzzle as much (when fit correctly), and when the dog pulls, the pressure is transferred directly to the back of the dog’s neck. Weaning off of the Gentle Leader is easier as well. You just need to slip the nose loop off and you’re able to train with the neck collar still attached just like a flat buckle collar. My dog is an American Eskimo and has a problem with pulling. Once my dog had his gentle leader on he immediately tried to take it off. He ended up hurting his nose because he was using his claws to get it off. I introduced it to him slowing and positively while giving him a lot of treats! It’s either I did something wrong or my dog is just scared of having something on his head. How can I make him more comfortable with a head collar?

Unfortunately, a skunk got onto my porch. When it couldn't figure out how to exit, it sprayed the place-and my dog-good. Do you have any tips for getting rid of the smell?

Yes, it has a small clip that hangs below the mandible. This is only on the “gentle leader” which is a brand name

once the dog is use to the halti can we keep it on him 24/7 until he learns not to pull

When I put the gentle leader on my dogs they jump shake and try and rip it off which peels his fur along with skin. Any tips so my dogs don’t get hurt while on a walk?

Hi there, Meli2870! We actually have another video about introducing the Gentle Leader to your dog that you may find helpful! It's not necessarily an "all of nothing" process. Making the process rewarding can include rewarding your dog for putting it on then taking it off. Putting the GL on when you feed your dog can be helpful. Putting the GL on and playing something like tug is a good way for some dogs to be more comfortable with the equipment. Perhaps dpon't use that particular type pof leash ..your dog is trying to tell you something these profiteers don't. These leashes are very delicate to fit and use. There are so mnay othe roptions to walk and train a dog insteading of using something that OBVIOUSLY causes him distress.

im currently muzzle training my friend's dog, and the trick is to do it bit by bit, hold the muzzle up with a treat on the other end and only let him have the treat when he puts his muzzle through, work your way up to making him have to wait for the reward by holding it tight between your fingers, when he is used to it being on his nose hold the straps in place without doing them up and reward him if hes calm while letting him go quickly, gradually up the stakes by doing it up loosely and rewarding him (no leash), then tighten it to fit. give him high value rewards whenever its on (cuddles, his favourite toy, his absolute favourite treats) and work on having it on him for a few minutes before working your way up to having a leash on him. do this over five minute increments with ten minute breaks over a few days or weeks at least thats my experience, probably better to check the videos

He doesn't pull with it on which is good, but he pulls huge fits every couple minutes trying to rip it off. Does anyone have any advice for this? Hi, I hope you've tried this and found the answer. This worked from minute 1 for my 60lb gsd who doesn't like dogs and loves squirrels. So does a prong collar but I'm much happier using a halti as it's a lot less intrusive.

I have a 115lb great dane that was really abd anxiety and would pull me off my feet even with a prong collar but as soon as I put the gentle leader on she can't even jerk me around. I really can't recommend them enough. I never thought I would ok about taking her out by myself again

Do You have suggestions for a dog that still pulls with a Gentle leader. It does not seem to phase him, and he is a 160 lb Irish Wolfhound so he can pretty much pull me where ever he wants. I have been trying to work with him on leash walking since a pup and nothing really seems to stick.

Turning your dog around in circles during walks… stop call your dog to you and walk backwards.. high value treats… still trying to get my dog to stop pulling.. but these things have helped.. 👀🥺❤️🧜🏻‍♀️

I need a video for putting it on. He acts like a wild animal when I try to put it in him. I can’t get it in. And when I did he basically pulled it off his mouth before I could get the leash on.

I have to admit I am not a fan of the gentle leader, I have found that some people suddenly develop recall problems with the dog. Not with the dog coming back - but that they remain out of reach to prevent it being put back on. That being said I like that you refer to it only as a training tool. The distance thing I still use with my German Shepherd who is nearly two - around other dogs, when I need to recall him in spotting another dog on the lead. The threshold is actually dependant on the breed of dog and age. He has more problems restraining himself if he sees a young lab or golden retriever - his eyes seem to say - but mom - they are so much fun.....Please, mom.... A small dog I can just say leave and 95% of the time he will - I still put him on the lead just in case.

Hi there, Love Of Pets! Some dogs get pretty put-off when they first wear a head collar. It's really important to do things like putting it on when you feed them, putting it on and use lots of rewards, putting it on and play with them. We trained a dog who would get the gentle leader on and run and get their frisbee. That dog had been introduced to the Gentle leader every time they would play with that frisbee. So they immediately associated it with that fun game! It can be a challenge at first when introducing a head collar to your dog, but it's often the dogs who put up the most fuss that really need that extra control for more success when training! My shelter dog is a nightmare. Been trying training for 2 months barely making progress. Inside the house yes not outside. I just ordered a face leash. I've trained all my dogs and never had this much difficulty

My dog hated the gentle leader. It got to the point he would just lay down and refuse to get up. I ended up using the prong collar and it was a huge difference. I wouldn't pull on it, just a gentle correction would stop him from pulling.

Prong collars work, until you are willing to train the dog properly. I used them 10 years ago

Give him treats when putting the collar on and while he has it on keep him distracted w food or activity! The second our pup starts to get bored on our walk he’ll try taking it off so I’ll make sure to keep talking to him or distract him in some other way

because you’re trying to instill that good behavior into your dog, you don’t want him/her to only behave accordingly depending on the gentle leader, as you wean off it’ll instill your dog to behave accordingly with and without the leader. Why would you only want him to behave on the gentle leader? It was designed as a TRAINING tool it wasn’t designed as a “forever” collar/lead. hope that helped!

I was struggling with a rescue dig she would lunge at people while walking her and was hard to handle. I tried everything this easy lead saved her life I was ready to rehome her people were afraid of her behavior. Since the easy lead she walks at my side and no more lunging. I do not care if she has to use it the rest if her life. I tried shock collar, a pinch collar, a harnesses, a regular collar and nothing worked I was ready to give her up. The Trainer said she may have to use this rest of her life while out .she is so afraid

Oh dear. Loved this video up until 5:40 and your dog gets squeezed back in to the GL that way. I saw a bad bite to an owner who did that to his dog. A shame, I would have loved to share this with my students.

Hi there, Misa! It’s really important that you are confident in your dog’s ability to have the gentle leader taken off, and put back on if you’re going to slip the lead over their nose. This method allows you to maintain control the entire time you’re working, without having to switch collars. If you have a dog who you have any reservations about, slipping the nose loop off or on is definitely not advised. Something important to keep in mind is to stand alongside or on an angle with a dog who you’re fitting a collar on. This eliminates the possibility that your dog will feel any sense of confrontation, or feel a pressure of you “looming over” them as you replace the collar. Y do u have a sound effect that freaks skitzofrenicz out right around about 40 seconds?

My dog pulled through the halti head collar and looked like a rabid maniac by the end of the walk..tongue hanging out, frenzied eyes ..got turned off walking the fool because of it ..indoors he's one of us and off leash second to none but on leash a prick.. I've tried every non pull lead on the market and training techniques..he's just an asshole on the lead

This doesn't mention any reason to wean off the gentle leader. You keep saying it's important, but there's absolutely no reason to.

Don't these stupid things twist the dogs head and neck?

How on earth can it be interesting for a dog to go on a walk when they're being hurt? Actually pulling on a lead is fun for the dog, and also help them understand which way you want to go by having tension on the lead.

For SHAME on you for using this tool. You fail to consider how stupid or lazy many owners are and it would serve the animal better to teach them human ways to train rather than using this punitive health threatening device. I don't seek control. I encourage desire training with a more complex understanding than risking my dogs snout health and comfort. These leashes are very dependant upon a good human fit and in a day and age when people can't even control themselves in minor ways such as staying off cells phones you are serving up defenseless animals to be at the mercy of the obtuse masses.

Claire ... so according to you a halter on a horse, which is the same thing, is stupid and lazy. I mostly use a front pull harness hook up on the big shelter dogs I work with until a Martindale is sufficient for loose leash. Recently a 120# cane corso and big gsd did need head halters to get anywhere for a week or so. But you are right in the sense that knowledge and technique trump gear every time.

@@bobandjerishaffer1001 Bob if you regard the horse halter the same as a dog than you need to get your eyes checked. They are SIMILAR but NOT the same. BY virtue of the animal's anatomies they are vastly and importantly different. One rides up and can irritate the eyes and nose , the other doesn't . One can be bought and mounted too tight, the other one can't. These 2 points of interest and difference is what makes one harmless ( although I can do with the horse bit) and the other one is all too often ill fitted ( too tight and high, hurting and agitating the dog) and is sadly used beyond a sparse training period. It is because of the rampant stupidity of human's, I belive that NO conscious person would recommend it to anyone when there are so many other alternatives that do work and train..not contain. As you''ll see many of the NOTABLE trainers do not sell these items nor use them.

No training tool is right for every dog/owner. Your argument regarding fit is redundant, collars, standard harnesses and front harnesses can all be fitted incorrectly and cause damage as a result. The greater concern is people who don't exercise their dogs. If training tools used correctly and can assist there isn't a problem

once the dog is use to the halti can we keep it on him 24/7 until he learns not to pull
