This is one of the biggest reasons we homeschool. Our kids get to explore education through their own interests rather than learning just to pass a standardized test. The goal is by the time they're ready for college (if they decide to go that route), they will know what they want to do with their lives, not like me where I'm 30 and still don't know what I want to be "when I grow up"

For me being in 9th grade currently, I hate going to school..I ask my elders "what is school for?". The same question, they reply School is the place which decide your life and control your life. I see Teachers constantly teaching us about our pasts. The wars, the scientists, the random things we will forget when we will grow as adults. I never get motivation to study and just keep on blabbering and memorizing the same things which I will eventually forget. The teachers in school don't give the needed motivation. They compare us, they comment on us based on our grades. School honestly gives me more anxiety, stress and depression than knowledge. School feels likes a prison to me not a place of freedom which I can go and learn. The words said in this video is so relatable to me. Loved it👍🏻👍🏻

That's too bad. How about this: take the easiest classes at your school. (i.e. no AP's or IB's or advanced or honors etc) This way, you'll have practically all the free-time in the world. At the same time, through intrinsic motivation, learn something specific that you're passionate about deeply. This might mean reading a ton of books on a topic. Don't wait for college or for high school to end to start on something you're passionate about. Join clubs at school. If the club of your interest doesn't exist, start one. School will feel less like prison if you have something at school to look forward to. And you'll feel less restricted when you realize how much you can learn without school.

This… I… I cried. I cried because I had so much going on when I was in school. I had things happen to my siblings in elementary school, I was bullied horribly in middle school to the point of being depressed and almost harming myself… thankfully I got outta there and switched schools. And for high school? I switched FIVE different high schools because of the mask during the pandemic and not being able to wear it and afford the private school I went to because I wanted to truly LEARN. I love learning… but I couldn’t do that when they placed pressure on me, when they didn’t allow me to think creatively. My first high school understood this, my other schools didn’t. And my last high school? The one where I didn’t have to teach myself for half the semester and then fight to learn the other half… Despite being an online home school, they really taught me lessons I will cherish forever. Thank you West River Academy.

As a person who goes to highschool in Australia I can say that they do and will teach us a lot of stuff about leaving school and getting a job. In fact when you start year 10 (about 15-16) you are able to pick your own classes for what degree you want in college such as language arts, Business and leadership, Advanced Phycology, Veterinary practice, etc. But the thing is you are able to drop these classes at any time and choose others if you realise that maybe being a physician isn’t for you. They also start implementing classes on taxes, bank accounts, credits/debits, and many other things you would need to do as an adult. Obviously Maths, English and Homeroom are compulsory but these other classes allow you to do something else for when you actually leave school and go to college. Another class my school does is languages, This class is highly recommended but not enforced. This class allows you to learn any language you want with either a private teacher or your own class. This class is literally free and after about two years they may let you travel to the place your language is from. Unfortunately, these easy to work in classes are not in every highschool in Australia and sometimes you may miss out on these bonuses, but personally as someone who goes to there it has really made an impact on my friends in higher years and they constantly are excited about going to their next class. I really hope one day this will be implemented in more schools but for now I will just be grateful for what I have.

In my country, when you meet another parent, they either ask you about your grades or about what school you’re going to. The problem is becoming so severe that many children have problems going to good elementary schools, so the government enforces a law for children to be selected at random for the top primary schools.

Exactly! I'm not proud of it, but I genuinely do not care in the slightest about what I'm learning, I just do it for a good grade. (And to be clear, I love learning, I just hate school) It has given me so much anxiety, stress, and loss of sleep. While I am a A's-B's student, I still feel terrible all the time. I flinch at hearing my own alarm, because I know that I need to go to school because of it, and feel so, so stupid all the time because of my inability to do math or science well enough for my own and other peoples standards. I hope that whoever is in the school system is doing well and exceeding, and I genuinely wish you a good day/night. ❤

When you specifically mention the getting an extra hour of sleep over working, I completely agree. Since going to college, I’ve started prioritizing sleep and other healthy habits over school work and this has led to way more productivity and success in learning. I set a deadline for my homework and studies, and if I don’t finish them in time, I simply accept I could have started them sooner and go to bed because doing slightly better on an assignment worth less than half a percent of my grade is never going to be worth an extra hour of sleep that allows me to learn better the next day. It’s greatly improved my outlook on school and learning and I’m hoping others can prioritize their own health over grades, even if it seems like a bad choice

I agree it's pretty silly how much people care about grades. The only reason a student should care about a passing grade not being an A is if they have some reason that it would be easier to achieve their desired career by going to a prestigious school (e.g. professor, researcher). But in most cases, that isn't necessary. I think there needs to be a change in the culture surrounding grades.

511Club the quote (nor the video) was not saying do away with school. As far as the quote - don’t just rely on what you are told in school to become all you know. Read, research, watch videos/movies, do the activities and topics that interest you. Look into topics deeper. Don’t just take what you are told in school as the whole picture. It’s the picture from a certain point of view.

My school is built like a ghetto tbh. There are almost no windows, we have to strictly walk on designated lines in the tile, the teachers are the only ones in control because I haven’t seen the student council able to do much, so we were forced to make a social ecosystem that was really messed up. Backstabbers, fake friends, false rumors, homophobia, bullying, and other stuff. One of my friends has ADHD and has told my teacher many times but whenever he sees her doodling he threatens to take her notebook away. He’s actually done it once. This pressure goes on and on generation after generation. Feel bad for the ones who were little kids then and are now in my place.

As a history teacher, i have worked my first year trying to establish my style of teaching analyzation through history along with other teachers. I have even told students that dates dont matter. Memorizing names doesnt matter. Its why my tests are open note. Students should know how to reference information that a question requires and i aim to teach that. Students will never have to memorize a bunch of paperwork to fill out a form for work. I cant speak much for district tests and finals, but the smaller tests i make open note because memorization just doesnt work. If you retain the information great. If you lose it after the school year but you still know the skills to find that information again, thats just as great. My own little experience and goal rant is over.

Teachers need to be observers who help students set their own goals based on their needs. 5hey should learn there are consequences to choices. There should be room for mistake making called trial and error. Keep it fun and engaging and self rewarding. Good evaluation comes from sensible self evaluation that encourages self reflection of students own goals.

Our school system needs to be changed. They should make us visualise things and make us relate to it. Memorising things cannot help in anything except scoring good marks. If I go to shop to buy something, the shopkeeper will ask me to find the cost of pen if it is 5 times the cost of eraser or anything. 😂 What will I do after finding out the volume of gulab jamun? 😂 If I'm eating an icecream, why should I find surface area of cone, I bought icecream just to eat not to measure its surface area and all. What if I don't have interest in that subject? If teachers taught us in fun way, energetically and enthusiastically then we would have had interest in all these things. I don't have any intention to hurt anyone. Just here to share my thoughts that came while watching the video. Do share your thoughts on this. Thank you

@@clementine._. Yeah. That's the reason I got bad grades, I was scared of the teachers. They would yell at you when you said you didn't understand the question because they said you didn't listen, and you should have listened, then they help you but hate you for the rest of the day.

Victoria Ordyniec I know! My school makes us wear uniform, but the jackets are not insulating at all! The girls have to wear skirts and tights in 14 degrees! (I live in Australia.) we are not allowed to bring in anything to wear that is out of uniform. The students complained they were cold, but the teachers told us that being cold wasn’t an excuse to dress out of uniform.
