BEFORE YOU BUY An A45 or CLA 45 AMG Consider This

An update on my ownership of the CLA 45 AMG - recently had the Mercedes Service B carried out and during that was informed I need ANOTHER set of front tires... eats them for breakfast this AMG.
I go through a breakdown of what's involved in its second service and how it differs from the first, including a costs breakdown. Hopefully of some interest to those of you considering this as a future car!

Zubair Hoque you are not able to rotate tyres. This is because of the tyre pressure monitoring system, each sensor is associated to that axle. I.e. front left front right. I have a standard A class, and was advised to dealer to not rotate tyres. Due to this issue as well as vibration from suspension because as a tyre is used on a specific axle, it is bedded in to that suspension set up etc...

Zubair Hoque check your alignment. Merc has ridiculous specs of toe out which chews up the tyres. Something like 5-7 degrees toe out on the front. Do something around 1.5 toe out on front and you will notice a difference. However the steering feel might be a bit more floaty but you'll get used to it. You dont need cup4s you can just use super sport2s as the cups were out even faster.

Jason Lee they are bullshitting you. You can reset the tyre sensors after a rotate in your assyst plus on your cluster screen in 30 seconds. Plus you should rotate tyres every 10k regardless. Unless you have a staggered wheel and tyre setup which all A classes do not have either. P.S the sensors are located within the valve itself inside each wheel. Its called a TPMS Tyre pressure monitoring system. It has its own power supply from inertia generated power. You can swap wheels all you want you just have to reset the system after every change.

nope no chance really? Because I do really want to rotate t. How does the system know which wheel is which then?

maybe the type of tire you're using is the cause of why you wear your tires out so fast? Try using a more durable tire. Unless you're using your AMG on a racing track, then it understandable why you'd wear out your tires so fast. Maybe change the tire rating?

Hey bro I am a BMW tech. I don’t like when people buy these premium cars and want to cut corner with maintenance. It is never worth it to cut corners with schedule maintenance. Your car is an high performing car with soft compound tire. Watch some F1 and you would understand. Winters are a softer compound than summers and would wear quicker in the summer than summer tires. Your alignment setup might also be more aggressive than a regular car. You have to pay to play is all. My advice enjoy the car as it is a unique car and will come with unique issues. Cheers

I agree, many people just look at the cost of the car and the insurance, the obvious items, but forget that buying a premium or performance car comes with the bills for the consumable items such as tyres, brakes and maintenance. It doesn't matter whether it is new or 5 years old. A £50,000 performance car will always cost £50,000 performance car money to run. Budget accordingly and there will be no surprises.

Yes keep it in good running order but thats how all vehicles should be kept. This car is no more special than the next. Suppose it all depends on your definition of what cutting corners is?, if you think servicing this car yourself or at a back street garage is cutting corners then we disagree hugely! Nothing worse than hearing a mechanic who works for a lux car company thinking he knows better than some kid who works for a back street shop, and I know you never said that!

The tread wear is middle to outer edge which usually indicates tracking, as you've pointed out. But tracking would mostly affect outer edges of tread. The middle tread depth wear being the lowest would indicate these tyres have been over inflated. As a BMW tech, surprised that didn't occur to you...

Hi Z, Thanks for the vid and comments. First thing; I highly recommend that you never, ever skimp on your tyres, and for a car offering performance such as this, do not mix them. Remember your tyres keep you attached to the road, support safe and surefooted driving, not only for you, but the general road audience on the road and pavements around. Think of it this way, if you lose traction due to poor grip, how much will a bent wing cost to fix or what would you say to the person you might have just hit? Look after the grip, the servicing and enjoy your motor, if you do not enjoy it change cars. All the best.

I purchased my a45 when it was 3 years old. Full Mercedes service history.. i went to book my service 30k service (at 4 years old) I was quoted at nearly £700 for that service.. and for the service which is due next year i was told it would be a similar cost if not more.. Mercedes actually offered me a service plan for the 4th and 5th year service's. £67 per month for 12 months to cover both services, I think this was quite reasonable and saved me quite a lot of money. This is something people on you channel could enquire about to help save themselves money for the future maybe....

You know I NEVER understand these youtube vids where people bitch about how expensive it is to maintain their high end cars like they expected it to be the same as their old honda. U never see rich people or people who can actully afford these vehicles complain because they ether knew what they were getting into with the finances to back it up or they leased it for 3 or 4 years and gave it right back before the warrenty ran out which is the smart thing to do. Quit the money complaints and drive something thats in your tax bracket

It’s a performance car so you need to keep the oil changed regularly. Let me tell you how labour rates work. A Mercedes technician will have 2.5 hours to service say a B service but if he completes the service in less time then he gets a bonus. I.e. he works 8 hours but can sell 11 hours if he works hard. Buy a service plan and budget for it. It’s also going to eat tyres if you drive it hard. If you say you don’t then your lying!

Neil Colls hey. This is not to bitch and start a discussion but i'm an tech at mercedes, and i can tell you we don't get a bonus for completing the service in less time. Mercedes germany sets a service time and puts a price tag on it, and we have to follow that. We have had some customers who made comments about it. But yeah.... nothing much we can do about it. I agree it's pricey... sometimes i also ask myself why it has to cost so much.. but yeah.. i have to earn my paycheck and for a mechanic at mercedes, with those prices, It's not much.. But what a lot of people comment. He is driving an AMG. Don't drive a sportscar and then complain about maintenance. Especially the tires. If you have to fix it due to bad maintenance it's gonna cost you a lot more...

Why do people own sports cars in England? The speeding fines are outrageous. 22mph over speed limit would cost me $3500. I live in Texas. Most of the surrounding highways are 85mph. I would have to go 110mph before any serious tickets happen. Even then, it's like $400. There aren't any speeding cameras either.

The problem with how a lot of repair shops dictate their pricing is they have a standard price for different types of services and it's just based on an estimated amount of time to perform the work. Even though it does take less time, they still charge the same price. Some shops simply charge for how many actual hours were used for labor, but most shops I've been to do the standardized pricing because they make more money that way. I know it sucks, but it's hard to find shops these days that charge by the actual hours their mechanic actually took to perform the specific service.

Its not too bad. I would ask them not to fill the sprinkler reservoir, which you can do yourself. You can also tell them not to recharge the battery, which is basically what they did for 8 pounds, and that is not needed. It should not take 2 hours to change the oil and replace an engine and/or cabin airfilter, which you can also do yourself.

I am also a mechanic (was a dealer apprentice back in the day) and I can tell u most dealer servicing costs are a joke. Not sure how they work in the UK but, in Australia, the service center will always over sell servicing. When things look like a little bit of ware they are changed when they are just under or over half their life, typical dealer servicing.

Thought you would say over €1000. I've got a Mercedes CLA200 and visited 3 Mercedes service stations and all offers was between €900-1000 for the B-service, a certified service station offered between €750-900 but found later an appreciated service station with awesome reviews and they did all the work + extra stuff for €500. So with an CLA45, I think the price is pretty fair.

First of all, if you're going to own a benz no matter which model, the one main key thing to do is buy all the parts online! You'll get everything SOOOO much cheaper! And for the most basic services, you can do them yourself at home. Only rely on the dealership for the big main repairs! That's the one thing to keep in mind when you purchase a benz!

  • @berniecruz8405

    @berniecruz8405

Well, most average people who buy expensive cars need to service their own cars. Because most average people are not ballin'. They just have happened to indulged in splurging a little on themselves. It's the people who are not average and who are in the upper middle class and upper class who realistically would not be servicing their own expensive car. This is because they have the high income to afford the added expense of servicing expensive cars. The so called "average person" does not have that disposable income available like that. This is why I commented about how one can save money on the servicing part of a benz if they just shop online for the parts. It's like having a taste of the good life on a beer budget. That's all I'm saying.

1st off all cars are 12 months or x amount of miles. Secondly its 4matic, they tell u it's not constant 4wd if you read up on the car b4 u buy it. Mercedes have service plans it's not something u should think about later or you'll pay the cost like u have, my 3 year service plan is £30.38 a month and also includes the extra service costs - rear axle oil change and something else. As for the tyres your pushing 300+ bhp through a few square inches of road contact on your front tyres how long do you expect them to last. If you want a free service fit a dashcam with parking mode to your car, review the footage and like me you'll receive a cheque for full refund of your years service in the post 👌

Also good tires wear out faster, if you want them to last longer then buy some Chinese cheapies with 500+ thread wear. Though the first time it rains I suspect you will head back to the dealership and have the proper ones refitted.

Changing back to front is good, but you must remember an A45 gives 381 HP and will wear your tires very quick even though you don't drive fast but I bet you accelerate quite fast. You don't buy an Amg to worry about service or tyres. I own an A45 and i hear the service 3 (c service) is over a grand ( inc engine grearbox and diff oil. Service plan is your friend £30 /£40 pm ish and can be started at any time. As for tyres these cars they run so much caster from stock, 6 degrees or so (that gives more camber for front end grip when the steering wheel is turned). Down side to this is tyre wear, especially on the insides. If your getting more than 8k out of set of tyres its a waste of time owning a 45 because your not driving it right. Dont rotate tyres buy new in all 4 corners to keep rolling radius the same. Thats what your supposed to do with a 4wd car, even a haldex one. Michelin PS4s are by far the best tyre for this car and will last the longest. I run them on mine and they are epic.

alright mates; the merc/bmw game. 1. you dont buy, lease. if your merc or bmw is more then 3 years old your not in the game. 2. in aspect to tires, you cant run them 90-120 tread wear on city streets its murder mate. when you get the car one 8:00 day 2 buy a set of runners(800-1000 pounds) with high tread wear 300+. put the sport tires back on when you turn your lease. a full set of tires can cost 2000 pounds or more. 3. prepaid maintenance for like 21 a month worth it. about the labor: dealers "FLAG" a amount of time for each bit or work; so even if it takes them 5 minutes, its still flagged for 1 hour. with mercadesme/mbrace: keep detailed records of you data there, use all of the Mercedes services, you will rise up as an owner and be offered to be part of a survey group, you can get free upgrades, and courtesys when your name comes up. try and use all the commercial services mercedes benz international: restaurants hotels, spas. when you go to buy your next merc, it will pay off in upgrades, price and lease options.

It you’re not prepared or willing to pays those (or do the maintenance yourself) then just DON’T buy the car!

Don't drive with mismatched tires. That's a no no. Get the Michelin's. They are better than the Conti's or the Dunlops. They probably use the Dunlops or Conti's from the factory because they get better pricing. Some people simply tell the dealer what brand/model tire they want from Day 1 and some dealers will change them and charge you extra, some will just change the tires and not worry about the price difference. But certainly, get them changed out and get them to be the same brand/model tires and it's good to get them by a full set at a time.

Continentals wear out really quick in general. I just put a set on the rear of my E350 CDI and am expecting it to munch through them by the end of the year. All that said, because they are a soft compound tyre they do grip really well in dry and wet. I was hoping I can find the same as what I had on the rear before, but no stock anywhere. Bridgestones last a long time, at the cost of being of being a harder tyre and maybe not as good in the wet. When I got the car they were already on there. I managed to do 15k on what was left of them with some gentle driving, and some not so much. Those are my two choices depending on what you want to achieve.

I was considering buying this car for a while and after this video, of course I will... for a performance car, imo, that is not that expensive For the exemple, I have a friend who owns a M4, he pays for the same things (almost all of them) about 300 pounds more then it is there on your papers. another exemple, my father owns a ML270 Suv and he pays about 785 pounds for the same things... (even considering that it was once a 70.000+ pounds car) you are basically teaching me quite a lot... like being careful with its speed, it might cost me another tires for less then a year. I'm thinking on going to the dealership in the next month choosing some of the extras and the color for the car (I'm not putting that much of the extras, just the essencial) Great vid btw!!

I get both sides. His side and all the hate in the comments lol My brother owns a 2018 CLA 250 with the AMG styling which includes the wheels and tires, obviously. That car took like 6 months to run through tires, and that’s considering it’s half the horsepower of the CLA45 AMG. 6 months is rather quick, I think it’s just Mercedes as a whole tho, I’ve heard similar stories with other models. But the comments are kinda right. I always say .... if you have to consider gas prices or maintenance when buying the car, you probably can’t afford it and should settle for something a bit cheaper or just wait until you can afford it.

Tyre rotation is generally not recommended in the UK. Think about it - you're putting 5mm onto the front and 3mm on the rear. At some point, you're going to be running a car on 2-3mm all around. Thats a disaster waiting to happen in heavy rain or if hitting standing water. Just change the fronts and call it a day

Not sure you covered it, but I saw most of this video was eluding to the expensive service cost of mercs. Well in my country (im not in yours), it is not a legal requirement to service your car at the dealership while within the warranty period. Extended warranty though is another story, and that is usually actually a contract between you and the dealership of which you are signing up to the extended warranty with. But yeh, when it comes to maintaining warranty, you need only have the car serviced at a licence mechanic, obviously a euro one, and use the right parts in the service. Merc cannot turn you down if you make a warranty claim. Do your own research but that's how it is in my country. I turned a $1100 bill from merc in to a $400 bill by going with a euro mechanic. $400 is about $150 off the service cost (for same work) of say, a Subaru. So really not bad.

I also have a performance car and I know they are very costly, higher insurance, higher maintenance, and more expensive on gas. However, it depends on your cutting corner definition, i didn't purchase no plan from the dealer cuz i honestly it's stupid, they overcharge you for a simple service and you think you are getting a good deal. I have a 2018 Dodge Challenger TA limited edition with a V8 in it, i got it brand new, reject all maintenance plan because at 6000mile, I just bring it to other Service center such as Wheel works, or Jiffy Lube to change my oil, oil filter, maybe rotate my tires and thats about it, at 12k miles, then i will bring it to dealer for a service. Compared to dealer maintenance plan u are require to get service every 5000miles plus in average, u pay about $500 per service if i were to buy their 4 years maintenance plan up front. So u really think it's worth it for simple service in the first 2 years of a new car? oh come on... now u might say well later on if they find out fault u don't have to pay for it yeah but then if its something like mechanical failure or powertrain failure its covered already, and if u fucked it up yourself due to lack of knowledge of cars then it doesn't matter lol To me, a new car for the first 2 years shouldn't need any kind of major service so just simple oil change, and maybe new oil filter is just good enough
