Before MJ Was Dr. J

Спорт

Many seem to have forgotten the eras previous to Jordan, especially the one right before. Similar to the Kobe-Jordan mentor relationship, MJ and Julius Erving also had a similar bond. Dr. J was a player well ahead of his time and many of his moves and playstyle was the blueprint for the Michael Jordan we all witnessed.
Erving pushed the game forward and needs to be more appreciated as not only an all-time great, but a pivotal mentor throughout Jordan's emergence, his return and throughout his career!

The bulls wouldn't have lasted in the 80's. But the 90's? Yeah! In the 90's anyone could make the finals in the west. Look at the teams who weren't exactly dynasties. Jazz twice, Sonics, Trailblazers, Suns and an old, old Lakers team long past its prime years. Mike had it easy because the league was watered down. To further prove the point, did the bulls win the two years he was gone? NO! They could only win when he was playing and there simply was no real competition. If you say the Knicks, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone or other individuals like that were real competition, I'll laugh in your face. Those guys were nothing but thugs and Malone was a big softy. The only real competition the bulls ever really had was Indiana's Reggie Miller but he obviously couldn't do it himself.

Kareem, Magic, Worthy, Dr. J, Bird, Moses, Isiah, Hakeem, Sampson, Wilkins, Parish, McHale, all of these guys where record setting super stars who are all in the hall of fame. The closest player I've seen of those kinds of players was Lebron James. Big numbers and all clutch who kept it straight, who could lead and carry a team. LAL, Celtics, Sixers and Pistons had some of he deepest benches the NBA has ever seen. The 1980's was the strongest NBA decade in the history of the NBA. Jordan was just a punk in the 80's and his deep bench didn't come into play until the early 1990's when all of the above mentioned were starting to retire and hang it up, or just way past their prime. We already know Jordan had weak early teams. The point is the league wasn't as strong in the 90's as it was in competition during the 1980's. The 1990's had stars but they didn't have deep benches like the bulls had. Hence watered down league. And besides those bulls weren't really that good either because the two years Jordan was gone, they couldn't even get past the 2nd round. Your dust off of my tires man.

Dominique Wilkins did NOT “defeat” Jordan in 1988 you idiot. Every dunk he did topped very dunk Nique did. The windmill leaner off 2 feet-all of them. Jordan won. Back to back. 87 & 88. What are you even talking about. Dominique won in 85 & 90. Not 88…. Bud, YOUR irrelevant opinion is not fact solely because YOU do not like something; you are a blatant narcissist. “MY opinion is fact because I said so and think I can change history”…. That is THE most narcissistic shit I’ve ever seen. That’s flat out embarrassing…. You DO NOT know what the hell you’re talking about. At all. Like I said, you’ve already proven that completely. Stop trying . “A Jordanite” ?? Lmfao. What a complete idiot…. So if you actually acknowledge FACT and don’t hold to YOUR irrelevant opinion of YOUR OWN favorite player being the greatest thing that ever happened then you’re a “Jordanite”…. 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆 You are complete fucking clown.. Jordan was 10x better than Dr. J EVER was bud. He’ll literally tell you HIMSELF that Jordan was the goat…. You Come back and TELL me when Dr. J has the highest vertical leap in NBA history instead of Jordan. 48 inches. 4 foot vertical leap. Look it tf up.. Come back and tell me when Dr. J wins TEN scoring titles and puts up 30+ points a game for his entire CAREER. Both all-time records. He’s the all-time scoring leader, over 30 a game his entire career. Dr. J averaged 24. Also 24 in the playoffs. Jordan averaged 33.5, ALSO the all-time record…. Come back and tell me when Dr. J wins the MVP AND defensive player of the year in the SAME damn season, AND the scoring title too. Never been done by anyone else in the history of the game other than Michael Jordan.. Come back and tell me when Dr. J has SIX finals MVP’s in SIX attempts and never even gets taken to a game 7.. Come back and tell me when Dr. J leads the league in steals 3 separate times, like I said winning defensive player of the year on one of them.. Come back and tell me when Dr. J puts up 3,000+ points in a season like Jordan did, only 1 of 2 players to ever do so; he averaged over 37 points a game that year, in 87…. Dr. J has TWO scoring titles. And averaged 30+ a game ONCE his entire career. Jordan averaged 30+ FOR his entire career. There IS NO comparison bud. Stop trying. Jordan was the best player to ever step on the hardwood. Period. There is no debate, there is no agreeing to disagree, Dr. J will NEVER touch Jordan. Yeah of course Jordan looked up to him, because he was the one that came BEFORE him. That’s it. He was SOLELY the FIRST great dunker. NOT the best by any stretch of the imagination. Jordan, Vince Carter, & Jason Richardson were the best dunkers the game has ever seen. Jordan was BY FAR the best actual in-game dunker there was. He dunked on anybody at any time in his prime. He dunked on BOTH 7’7 tallest players to ever play MULTIPLE times. He posterized Manute Bol 4-5 separate times in 1990 & 1991. And then he posterized Gheorge Muresan when he was 34 years old in 1997 or 1998. Still dunking on 7’7 centers at 34 almost 35 years old. That’s ridiculous. Dr. J never dunked on anyone even CLOSE to them. Or anyone like Shaq, or David Robinson, Olajuwon.. Jordan dunked on EVERY SINGLE great shotblocker of all-time. He got ALL of them. Every one of them except Chamberlain & Russell solely because they played 30 years before him. Jordan wasn’t even born yet when Wilt put up 100 in a game. And he was 7’2 being guarded by 6’7-6’8 guys named Henry and Robert. Lmao. Nowhere near the dominant big men Jordan played against and completely posterized as a 6’6 guard. There IS NO comparison bud. Just stop trying. Solely because Dr. J was YOUR own favorite player does NOT in ANY way mean he was the best. That is sheer narcissism. You’re done. You do not know what you’re talking about at all. Like I said, Come back and TELL me when Dr. J does every one of those things I said…. Nice try bud.

@@realg5276 lmfao. Kid, absolutely nobody cares what Doug Collin’s stories say about his own favorite player. Jordan had the HIGHEST vertical leap in NBA HISTORY. There IS NO getting around that fact. Period. Jordan was the greatest in-game dunker of all time. He posterized centers that Dr. J wouldn’t even have a chance of dunking on. Period…. And Jordan STILL jumped farther in his FT line dunk than Irving ever did like I said to begin with. Irving’s whole foot was in front of the line. LOOK at it. It’s on KZread for ALL to see. Don’t be willfully blind and flat out lie because you don’t WANT to see it. There’s NO getting around it. MJ could jump far higher than Dr. J ever could. Period. Look it tf up. Jordan had the highest vert in NBA history. Period. End of argument. That is 100% fact, there IS no circumventing it…. Die hard Dr. J fans are blatantly hilarious. Wrist at the very bottom of the page, middle fingertips at the top of the page. His hands are so large, he could handle a basketball like most men would grip a softball.

Dr J had sold out all arenas in his last season..he instantly dominated the NBA in 77 and lost his ring and finals mvp because of locker room toxicity by McGinnis wanna be bus driver and Free..their coach was also a total idiot not realising the moment..every other ABA star got better numbers than Dr J in the Nba like DT and GG exept Dr J who was asked from the Sixers to tone it down to 20ppg and 17 fga ,from 29 ppg and 23 fga ,to include McGinnis,Collins and Free in the offense..whitch is exactly what happened! For those who think they know better Dr J had a fixed .5 fg in both leagues, down to his last season and shot slightly better than MJ and way better than Kobe who just played more iso, more minutesd and averaged more fga per game than Dr J! His combination of Steals,Offensive rebounds and Blocks per game is far far better than any other volume scorer and leaper including,Mj,Kobe,Lebron,KD,VC,Dominique and even power forwards like Garnett,Noviski and Giannis!!!!

Dr. J's really underrated for his defense too, he's 23rd in All-Time Career blocks as a SF, to put it into perspective MJ's 126th and Pippen's 112th. In All-Time Career steals though, Dr. J is 8th, MJ is 4th, and Pippen is 7th. The comparison is for sure close in steals, but one issue looking back historically was the ABA just wasn't televised much especially not the same way the NBA was in 90's so it's hard to find clips of his defensive highlights. Also for the jump shots, there's a few clips especially in the end this video of Erving's that are very similar to the form Jordan later made popular

@@DeeNice681 That's a good point to notice, at the time especially it was always the point guard's responsibility to bring the ball up the floor and set plays in the halfcourt. To be fair also in the 70's and 80's handles weren't as important especially for his position. Jordan definitely had a tighter handle though as the game was evolving towards the need for it. Early Jordan was more similar to Erving with the explosive finishes and crafty dunks and layups
