Liszt's solo piano transcription of Beethoven's symphonies belongs to the most challenging works of the piano repertoire. The 5th, 6th, and 7th of Beethoven's 9 symphonies were completed by Liszt in 1837. Liszt subsequently performed the transcriptions throughout Europe before going on a 23-year hiatus on the project until he finished it in 1863. The full set was eventually published in 1865 and dedicated to Hans von Bülow, Liszt's son-in-law.
00:00 - I. Allegro vivace e con brio.
08:55 - II. Allegretto scherzando.
13:27 - III. Tempo di Menuetto.
18:22 - IV. Allegro vivace.

This is not a piano reduction, this is a true transcription. Liszt, definitely the best transcriber of all time

The best transcriber, but one of the worst composers.

@@ultimateconstruction I disagree. He revolutionized a lot of things and was extremely important His symphonic poems were like a prediction of what Strauss would be like a few years later His really original romantic pieces, such as Libestraum, Un Sospiro and Benediction de Dieu are very good, even though they were very simple for the time. He mainly changed the use of the tritone with the Mephisto waltzes and Dante's sonata He was one of the first to attempt atonalism, with the "bagatella without tone", which, even though it was something closer to omnitonal, was important for the study of Arnold (I refuse to write his surname)

Best part of it being Liszt who transcribed these is, you never have to wonder “if I was a better pianist, could I have made a few parts more authentic?” Cuz the greatest pianist in history already tried harder things for you, and decided on this in the end

Most underrated beethoven symphony. Liszt does this masterpiece justice (no surprise there)

Every time I listen to Tchaikowsky piano concerto 1, with lots of diminished chords, I remember this symphony instantly (for example, the crescendo on 5:00). That's how you use this chord properly.

Calling this a piano reduction is kind of an understatement, because Liszt really does Justice to everything playing on the symphony very greatly!!!

Indeed, I'd call this a transcription rather than a reduction. Katsaris even adds some details Liszt left out.

These recordings get very mixed reviews because of Katsaris' "unfaithful" approach to the score, but I find his changes very tasteful and in most cases, they really do imitate the sound of an orchestra more closely. Also, in terms of recording quality, you really can't find any better than this.

Actually there are various ossias and different editions. Liszt often simplified his scores to suit particular performers. The published versions are for general consumption, but his students may well have worked from different variants.

@Sue Smith he also published the early symphonies when he was still doing concert tours. He revised them all in the 1860s. He also created a two hands version of the ninth, which he hadn't thought feasible. The 1830s versions would be limited by the range and qualities of many pianos about then. He also knew that Beethoven didn't believe in being rigid in interpretation. As for tempi, one of his students invented the metronome but, apparently, he never used it.

Something about this Liszt piano transcription that manifest very powerfully the stunning genius of Beethoven. I have mentioned to certain that this cosmic man regularly stepped way beyond the solar system to conceive his earth shattering ideas. He was quite the prophetic visionary gifted to wield such bizarre music to precisely the time and shape that made it leap by quantum bounds into the infinite. I listened to this transcription last night in its entirety and decided the first movement will suffice for tonight. This brother was that sparkling, radiant crazy renaissance man for all time! PWG

The second movement reminds me a lot of some of the moments in Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet…I think it’s one of the main (maybe Romeo’s) themes. I wonder if he pulled some inspiration from here!

A piano transcription of a Beethoven symphony. An unique accomplishment by far. The reference to “unfaithful” is unreasonable given the obvious limitations of the piano in comparison to a full orchestra? PWG
