    There still are strict rules in belgium too on certain beer styles , take for example trappist which is under strict rules and only 11 beers in the world may call themselves a trappist, of which there are 6 in belgium.

    +Laurens “Buzze” Buyse trappist is a religious order of catholic monks and the second requirement is that the beer must above all be brewed within the monestary by the monks. however trappist is not a style of beer it's a brand name of sorts. the trappist beers themselves are of various styles.

    I went to Belgium a few months ago to test my Dutch and to see what the place was like, and it was a truly amazing experience. I drank so many different kinds of beer I was technically drinking a different type of beer every day! And they each have their signature glasses, with original and unique designs, and the glasses are actually designed for that type of beer! For example the really foamy beers get a glass with a larger opening etc. Long story short I found out how truly magnificent Belgian beer culture is and it is insane I highly recommend trying them out for sure.

    German beer is beer, pure and simple. The German ‘Purity Law’ exists for a reason. The Belgians do make top quality traditional lagers as well (as do the Czechs, Austrians, Dutch, Danes, Poles, and others) but some of the Belgian varieties are cocktail liqueurs - enjoyable, yes, but cocktails nonetheless.

  • @davgg9621

    Cocktail Liqueurs pfff. Just because you dont like a fruity beer doesnt mean that its not a beer. Go somewhere else whith your pure german Lager, there is no problem if you dont enjoy it. But Taste will always be subjective and just because someone adds spices or fruits to his recipe it wont make his brew less of a beer...

  • @serialced

    Your take on Belgian beer and the varieties is very inaccurate I must say. While we do have a huge variety with certain breweries mixing it up, those guys are only a tiny niche within the available varieties. Most beers, even microbrews and most of our international award winners are fairly traditional in style and dont use 7 or more ingredients or stuff you wouldnt normally expect in a beer. What a terrible summary of what Belgian beer is about. It's much more about different fermentation processes than throwing in an extra spice or two.

    Now where you say it, an 11 year old may indeed be drawn to a liquid mix of orange peel, wildflower honey, cinnamon, jasmine scent, maple syrup, and malt. And if this says "beer" on the label, he probably thinks that he's drinking stuff for grownups, which may further enhance the appeal. The real stuff though he won't really enjoy before he's 17 or 18. One can only hope for him that by then, his taste buds haven't been spoiled for good.

    Exactly. Belgian brewing doesn't always require seven ingredients, but isn't hung up on just four. Belgian brewing is all about the yeast and the fermentation process, and this is why Belgian beers (and Belgian styles brewed elsewhere) are hands down the best in the world. German beer isn't bad, but nothing out of Germany can compare to a Rochefort 10 or a Rodenbach Grand Cru.

    Nono, its diffrent lagers, pilseners, wheats or Abts that they brew, they dont brew tripels, dubbels, enkels, grand cru's, ipa's dipa's or whatever other thing. German beers are not styles their more regional diffrences, most of them are Lager style beers with an Abt or wheat in between. Not that it is a bad thing tho, german lagers exceed any other lager from belgium, holland, france, italie, the uk/british isles, or poland. The only lager that is quite different is a genuine Pilsener from Pilzen itself.

    Look, the image of Belgium being such a super beer country is a farce. In reality only a very select portion of craft beers are suitable for human consumption. The rest just sells due to the famed ingredient "hype"! The pils/lager stuff in Belgium really is worst than the Dutch horse-pis in general, tangy lob-sided watery head ache inducing rubbish. As for "craft" there are a few Belgian beers that are exceptional, mostly due to random chance, but hey! I would suggest Duvel, Westmalle Triple, Triple Karmeliet, St' Bernardus 12. That is about it for my taste and ability to live with a throbbing head. In general, Belgian beers almost always have something wrong with them.

    Fruili is an absolutely horrible choice to represent Belgium. They import it and give that stuff to tourists that can't handle the other stuff... Belgium does have a good variety but I would argue that it is not as big as even USA or Canada.. Not to say variety is a good thing, case in point: Bud Light Apple.

  • @ldoumen9904

    @ldoumen9904

    It's not the quantity, but the quality that matters, most certainly in Belgium. And with the ancient tradition, the craftsmanship and the love Belgians put into the brewing process, it's no wonder that the whole Belgian beer culture is internationally protected by UNESCO. USA certainly has a lot more brewers, obviously, but most of their styles started as a certain Belgian beer style copy initially, and from thereon they took it further on to a more extreme taste, making this their own version. I was not going to say anything about light beers, because that's not beer nor a variety in our book, but this disgusts me more; Bud light Apple is absolutely not a beer at all.
