Have you had any issues with the long hive making honey? I am brand new, this year, to beekeeping. I have exhausted all of my equipment and had a long hive given to me. Nay sayers have said that bees won't build honey on the horizontal, that they have to build up to make honey. Have you had good experiences so far?

Mine does not make honey like my Langstroths do. Neither did my top bar hive I tried, nor my little round horizontal hive.

@@beek I have built divider boards for mine and have been contemplating adding suppers vertically to get them to build the way they want to. Do you think that this would work? I am also wanting to build some four frame nucs to try to winter over some late swarms or splits on top of a 10 frame deep colony for the heat off of it. Would I need to add a feeder rim below my double screen board to allow for feeding the big lower box? Heck I may be over thinking things.

David, I had to use soapy water (cup of Dawn to a gallon in a sprayer) and take out a mean hive. It has always been mean, but a good producer. But with the children and friends that come out here I’d had enough and took them out. Part of it extremely sad but I’m so glad they are gone.

Do you worry that the traits from the aggressive hive end up in your other hives thru drone mating with queens from you other hives?

There are so many feral colonies in your/my area that adds who knows what to the gene pool. But usually drones from the same yard do not make it out to the DCA where my queens are mating.

Hi David, as always, thanks SO much for all the valuable information! Question: Have you ever made a video regarding using 8-frame hive components? I know you mentioned 8-f equipment once due to the reduced weight and avoiding injuries as we continue aging. This is my first year (at the tender age of 62), so I decided to use 8 frame boxes. I transferred my 2 nucs into 8-F deeps, but I'm using mediums in place of two deep hive bodies. Then for next year, we hope to use shallows for our honey supers. I just cannot get the math for estimating when to add space, and I haven't been able to find information on 1 deep + 1 or 2 medium hive boxes, and then honey supers on top of those. I'm in central NC. Thank you for any help you might offer, or directions to a video you may have made!

Thank you. I've made videos from 8 frame hives as I have used them over the last few years. I have found that removing a few of the heavier honey filled frames from a box, then moving the box will greatly lighten up the box.

David i think you ought to do a video of how to remove a queen from a hot hive i had one five years ago and i now have one this year they don’t bother anybody as long as you don’t open the hive but boy when you do it on. I did a shake out the last time and probably going to do it this time like you said makes lots of honey but don’t want anyone touching it. Suit up tight lot of fun

@@beek I guess what I’m trying to say is. You have 733 videos from over a decade of YT. Where or how can I find a video featuring adding powder to syrup. Maybe you have a specific video link. Or maybe you know just the video where you have specifically showed this process and results. Maybe a video title to point me in the right direction. Just telling me you have already covered it doesn’t help me to find the information I’m looking for that much and kind of leaves me hanging. Cheers
