Bedroom makeover part 1| Ikea Hemnes Dresser Makeover

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hello guys, taking you along as I give my bedroom a makeover. I haven't done a bedroom makeover for myself in years, so this is very exciting for me. I'm giving my room new paint color, and giving new life to my Ikea dresser. I love this dresser from Ikea, it's one of their nicer quality items, and as you know I love a good IKEA hack.

Hey girl, this looks great! Just a tip the lower the number on your sandpaper the rougher it is and the faster it strips your finish. 240 is a fine grit and is designed to smooth out the surface before you stain or paint it. Something like a 60 grit would've stripped that paint and previous finish quickly. But overall you did great! Keep doing you!

    2 жыл бұрын

@@ffta2esper No, Using stripper makes sense if you are doing a piece with veneer as it is quite thin and you don't want to sand through it, however if you know it is solid wood and you just want to get through the old finish quickly you can just use 60 grit sandpaper, just make sure you then work your way up through the grits, i.e 60, 80, 100, 180, 240 to ensure you get it nice and smooth without any scratches or swirls the heavier grits can produce

Saida, that was an epic effort. You must have been losing the will at times but it paid off in the end, looks brilliant. You have inspired me to strip a smaller chest of drawers that won't require anywhere near as much effort and can be done by sanding the wax off. Drawer one now stripped (handles were a bitch to remove) and I'm liking how it's looking.

You’re a trooper! You didn’t give up good job. Some tips as you learned stain is applied with a rag apply as needed as you go and wipe good. Always wear protective gear stripping chemicals have a strong odor and may be harmful is breathed for long periods in a non ventilated area. Also furniture is stripped only if it’s worth the time and money bc as you learned stripping furniture is extremely time consuming and tedious. Therefore, for a piece like this unless you really truly love it, it’s not recommended. For those wanting to do this just buy a similar version at ikea (they do have them) with no color and then stain, they can turn out very beautiful. -Madeira Refined 🤍

true ! Their Tarva line is unfinished pine wood (but very limited!) - but I am always left wondering why IKEA does not sell more unfinished versions of their furniture line of products - the cheap lacquer / varnish they put on some of their Hemnes bookcases for example, that is just ugly, when you compare with a richer wood colour that you can stain to your liking. I wish they did offer more 'natural wood' options ...

How many sand papers did it take you to sand the entire dresser plus drawers? I’ve just started today the paint stripper, and I don’t know why I thought it would be practically wood coloured after it but by the looks of your video I have to sand it to see the wood entirely. I’m going to buy sand paper but it’d be great to know what amount I should buy. I have the same dresser but almost black. I didn’t think it would be this hard and this long...😬😂

The Billy bookshelves are made with particleboard. Therefore, they cannot be sanded/or stripped. I have these shelves too so I googled them and found some great hack ideas. Peek and stuck wallpaper can change the look, or if it’s a natural feel you’re after you could try adding rectangular wicker baskets. Maybe one of these ideas will work for you.

Hi Sarah 👋🏻- I don’t think the Billy bookshelves were ever made with real wood unfortunately. They are not part of the Hemnes series. I know this, because we have both the bookshelves, and the Hemnes bedroom set. I’m about to refinish the dresser, which is what brought me to watch this video. As for the bookshelves, since they can’t be stained, I think I would love turning them into built-ins, someday, with my husband’s carpentry skills. Good luck with yours!

Yeah 240 grit won’t do the trick. 60 or 80 would have been better and faster. Looks great though!

I‘ve done the same thing with our dresser and I must say 2 things: 1. it doesn’t have dark spots from paint like yours, so you might have to sand it more properly, and 2. though the dresser is now looking beyond beautiful, I truly regret doing this hell of a job and it’s a pity people promote all this ikea makeover stuff. Next time I‘d rather save my highly paid time and just buy one from a high quality furniture retailer. This is my personal choice, other people should feel free doing what they want.

I respect that. At this time I bought it used for $40 I couldn’t afford anything that I actually liked so I’m still happy that I did it. I still use it to this day. I’m sorry you find it a pity, I think like you said at the end we all should do what we want to do and no one is forced to follow anyone’s advice 😊 thanks for watching

An orbital sander with 80 git paper would see this stipped to bare wood in less than an hour.

All the labor, the the stuff to take out the paint the wood conditioner and the wood stain it would have come out less expensive to buy a new one ,it came out nice though but tooo !, much work

Actually I saved quite a lot, it looks almost like the one I wanted from Potterybarn wich was over a 1000 dollars so yeah definitely worth it for the look I wanted. Could you find a $200 dresser sure! but none of them were the ones I wanted.
