Becoming a Skydiver - My journey of learning to skydive

Since my childhood I have been dreaming of learning how to skydive, a sport that comes closest to the feeling of human flight.
During my trip to California, I finally made my dream come true and completed the AFF course and training to get my A license. With this video I would like to show you my way to become a skydiver and share my experiences and impressions. Skydiving has taken me out of my comfort zone in a very interesting and challenging way.
The training as a skydiver is divided into 2 levels. The AFF course (Accelerated Freefall) takes you to the status of a solo skydiver in 7 performance categories.
As soon as this status is reached, 18 more jumps are needed to obtain the A-licence. These consist of solo jumps as well as coached jumps in which certain skills are performed.

    My first licensed jump was a 4 way formation. Dudes were like "we're missing a jumper for 4 way you wanna go?" I'm like "bro I just got my license yesterday" They said "you're licensed right? You can jump with us! Let's go" It was fun.

    I was about 2 weeks away from taking my own life I was extremely depression and hopeless I thought about skydiving for years. I booked a flight and backed out because I was to afraid they kept my spot for when I was ready. I just decided to do it. It was 80 degrees with clear sky in November in Ohio. I was so afraid that my depression vanished and I just wanted to live which is exactly as a planned the moment I jumped from the plane is a moment I cant process my mind and body was overloaded at that moment. It was both the scariest moment of my life and the greatest. I never want to do it again though sky diving just isnt for me but it will always be a trump card for my depression and a final resort the moment I hit the ground I could barley stand up I could not believe I was still alive my mind completely reset and a lot of trapped emotions were released as I yelled during my drop. Sky diving worked even more perfectly than a planned and if I ever become really depressed I will take action and sky dive again. Again I pray I have to never do it again.

    It is funny, i did one tandem, i was really looking forward to it... night before it, morning and whole flight i was scared as shit... you know what happened after we left the plane? I dont really remember anything, but not because i passed out or something, it was because i was completely alive, in the moment, i did not think about anything on the ground, i just was, flying meat without any emotions, only happiness and joy, that was the freedom i had for 60 seconds and everyday i am looking back to that experiance adn everyday i look forward to my AFF... place among the clouds (i am only student at the university, no money for that kind of sport now, but i will do it, one day, i promised that to myself)

    Yeah, I'm fifty-six years old and I've been doing tandem jumps because I've missed the deadline for this summer's AFF training classes. My plan is to spend time at our local wind tunnel this winter and get as ready as possible for next spring/summer. I'm not interested -as of now- in becoming anything more than a competent solo skydiver. This would fulfil my needs, though I'm open to pushing it further in the future assuming I pass the AFF training. By the way, I'm absolutely terrified of heights, though as soon as Im sitting at the open bay of the aircraft, ready to be pushed off into space, my fear evaporates. Fortunately I've had some awesome instructors.

    Awesome vid and so great that you share your experience man. I did a static line course this summer just to start jumping and wanted to do the AFF course after it if I liked it. Unfortunately the weather delayed so much, that I was glad I could at least get my SL licence with 5 jumps in my short holiday from a very busy job. Without doubt, best experience ever. I will do my first AFF jump pretty soon, last opportunity before the winter break starts. Have started indoor skydiving as well to be more comfortable with a stable position. Can't wait to gain more experience indoor and to do the entire AFF course the next summer. The vibes of the paracentre were so awesome.

    I learned in the late 70s' I totaled 141 jumps, and attained a "C" license (C-13218), so the ADVANCED jumpers (>500), were perfecting their skills on their teams, so the single jumpers were all referred to out jumps as "Garbage" loads, "hey, wanna jump with us"? Then there are the "required" jumps; NIGHT (I attached about 10 chem-lites on me for effect); and WATER, Colorado River. Great times, but what memories.

    It’s been well over a year now, so have you continued in skydiving? I did my AFF at The Jumping Place (Shout out to Packin’ Kathy!) in Statesboro, Georgia at 47 years of age in 2016. I jumped several more solo jumps both there and at Skydive Texas when I got back in 2017. Didn’t jump for two years then went back to skydive Texas for a few more jumps last summer. I need a few more coach jumps and to complete some skills in order to get my A license. That’s still a goal, but life and work get in the way of leisure and personal goals sometimes. Good job on getting your A!

    I took my first solo jump 4 months ago (the parachute was attached to the plane so no pull needed) I wasnt nervous but when i sat in the plane with my legs dangling out i got the chills. Not the bad ones but the exciting ones. I am planning to go skydiving again soon. A lot of the people in my class was nervous but when i came down i just yelled "WHO JUST JUMPED OUT OF A PLANE, THAT WAS ME!" And they all laughed. they all went and said that the "victory" scream i made, made them a lot less nervous. If you are thinking about going GO, you won't find anything more calming, fun, and exciting thing in the world. Disclaimer - I am not english so sorry for my bad english. Have a nice day.

    I want to do the AFF /A License in Canada and I was also thinking of doing tunnel time prior to actually doing the AFF. How long did you spend for training in the tunnel? I know the theory of jumping and I’ve done tandem 3 times the last time I did it I got to deploy the chute and had the altimeter on my hand so I know to pull at 5,000. The other thing that’s keeping me away is piloting the canopy. Because I don’t no how much force you need to actually use to pilot it and I don’t want to jump until I have a good sense of how to do the patterns etc. This video helped a lot, but yeah just looking for your advice because it seems like you also took the tunnel approach first. I find with doing tandem you can’t get a sense of your stabilization so doing tunnel time would help.

  • @jonesaway

    @jonesaway

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey, thanks for your questions! Tunnel time will help you a lot. 30 Minutes are a good amount to get a good stable belly position and learning turns. Most indoor skydiving centers offer AFF trainings, to prepare you. Did your tandem master let you fly the canopy a bit? It's a very intuitive process and doesn't need lots of force to steer. What I also recommend is to hang around a dropzone and talk to some resident jumpers or AFF Instructors about all these things! I'm sure all of that will help you to start your skydiving journey. :)

    Hey man, pretty inspiriring story. I'm thinking about doing an AFF course in summer because I started seeing so many amazing videos. I'm thinking about not doing the tandem either, mainly because of how damn expensive it is, especially if I might want to make this a hobby. If I think of actually jumping I'm scared as hell, because the sensation must be so intense and completely different to watching a clip on youtube but I still feel like I should do this. There's just something about it. Do you have any tips or advise? Is it realistic to do AFF even though I never went skydiving before and it scares me a lot? Thanks a lot

  • @jonesaway

    @jonesaway

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Max! Sure, it's absolutely possible to skip a tandem skydive. If you want to get comfortable with the feeling of floating in the sky, you can go to a wind tunnel! It's insanely helpful, as you already know how it feels, before you jump from an aircraft. Once you are jumping from a plane, you will be surprised how calm and relaxing it feels. There's no intense sensation of falling. It's more like gently floating away from the plane with It's relative wind :). To be honest, even I'm still kinda nervous before the jump. In the beginning it was more intense and got less after getting my license but never vanished. It's what keeps us aware, alert and alive!

    The Best way, is to contact your local skydiving center. I would love to answer your question, but honestly don't know all regulations and rules, except what my Instructors teached me until now.

    6:10 did you try back flying in the tunnel yet mate? So you would not be scared of landing on your back during barrel roll😇 i did about 50 min on the back and i can tell you good instructor is a key, i still need practice few h more to be good at it but its weird feeling even in the tunnel- being on your back like turtle🤣 i think im watching your video 4th time as im getting little nervous( my aff course is 4.5 weeks from now) however i booked tunnel time from this weekend for next 4 weekends 10 min each weekend so i will get more confidence before jumping 2nd time in my life from plane on aff😃 fly safe😇

    Yeah I'm currently practicing back flying in the tunnel :) It's so amazing learning to fly the body fluently. Definitely keep at it, as my Instructors always tell me that back flying will be the key for freefly. I landed on my back quite often during aff, but another half barrel roll and you're back on belly. If you still feel uncomfortable, the tunnel time will help you incredibly.
