KPOP is a huge industry with entire teams dedicated to music and choreo, so it's a rare treat when the artists get to express their true selves and styles by writing or making their own music. It's more common in the smaller companies that the artists do their own stuff. Otherwise it'll be more B sides that they write on.

Solar is that friend who you feel so confident with. She's a really good leader and protects them as the oldest. Sometimes she will look like the maknae bc she's really a crackhead but when Solar is serious, y'll better no mess with her.

I started out a Solar bias, then became a Hwa'sa bias, then after Eclipse I was a Moonstar bias but now I'm a WheeIn bias.

Yes in Kpop non many idols write their own songs, especially girlgroups members while Mamamoo have been making music since before their debut, they're all certified songwriters and composers. For example Hwasa composed and wrote her song María and Moonbyul writes most of her raps and even adds it into songs that dont have it when they're covering them, They dont write all their songs but they definitely play a big part of everything they release sometimes even writing the storyboard for MVs like Hwasa with María. Not many idols are as involved in their music as Mamamoo, that's why in korea they're known not only as idols but also "artists and musicians"

They bully Solar because she is the leader but acts like the maknae. Her nickname is "Yeba" which is a contraction of two korean words: 예쁜 (Yeppeun = pretty) and 바보 (Babo = stupid-dumb). It sounds mean but, in this context, it is a term of endearment. Each one sings like a goddess but none of them take themselves seriously. You know how each K-Pop group has an iconic lightstick for concerts? Mamamoo's lightstick is in the shape of a radish because "Mu" is the Korean word for "radish." Welcome, fellow MooMoo.

Moonbyul is the highest credited female artist of her generation also she is the third most credited female artist ever I believe with mmm next comeback she will be no2 with more than 70 credits she is so damn impressive !!!!

Mamamoo came from a small company named RBW. They had a very small budget when they started. They never tried to focus on the typical K-Pop standard. They have a vast array of music to offer their audience. All of the four members are very good at vocals, even the main rapper Moonbyul is very good at her vocals as you saw in this video. Wheein is ranked at #3 among actual singers of SK (no other kpop idol is in this ranking list). Mamamoo writes, composes, gives ideas for their Music Videos, and even does their own choreo. Moonbyul did their debut choreo and it was awesome. Mamamoo has all of the 4 members in KOMCA as credited lyricists, Moonbyul with 65, Solar with 25, Hwasa with 27, Wheein with 4 under their name. Mamamoo is the only IDOL group to win Immortal song for 3 times. This is the show where they were highly praised by veteran singers, composers, musicians and they termed Mamamoo as Artists who can break the boundaries of an IDOL and go beyond it. All the raps of Immortal songs are written by Moonbyul herself. MAMAMOO is *THE ONLY* Kpop Girl Group to enter Billboard's World Digital Song Sales with both their group and solo releases from all their members (*and that is without any collab or feature*). I can go on about all the achievements but lets just stop here. Mamamoo has their own vivid color, they never tried to force themselves into one style, right from the beginning they always tried to spread love and happiness through their music. They all four have such strong and divergent personalities. Solar is a crackhead but she's also very serious about her art and business. Over at Solarsido my favorite video is her showing off, modeling and discussing her favorite pajamas. This may sound pretty frivolous but she takes it deadly serious. And of course that's why it's so entertaining. Moon Byul is source of chaos in the group but she also acts as protector. Wheein has a cerebral side and is probably the brains behind the operation but sometimes I think she may get inside her own head a little. Though she also can cut loose and get the giggles. Wheein giggling is one of the best things ever. And Hwasa on stage has an out sized charisma and an air of absolute confidence but off stage she is quiet, shy and introspective. Together Mamamoo is bigger and better than the sum of it's parts. I think that comes from countless hours rehearsing and live performances so they know instinctively what role each member plays and can anticipate what happens next. If you watch them behind the scenes you can see them work out how to do a song and how they intend to present it but you'll see no clash of egos, just four members working to create the best performance they can.

I remember having read/watched somewhere that Solar lets the girls bully her because it promotes camaraderie and unity between the three members when they gang up on her. 😂 You could also react to Solar being the leader and mother of mamamoo to view another side of the team's dynamics.

This group gangs up on their eldest instead 😂 Usually you would see the loser crew VS Solar but the love for each members are so pure. And yes, Mamamoo members are LGBT allies too. Solar also uses her platform to raise topics and such.

Byul is korean for star, so its easier for most ppl to just say Moonstar

I don't think any insomnia would get mad for saying that Moonbyul is ALSO an amazing rapper it's just facts... Imagine if they did a collab...

Since every member of Mamamoo has a good amount of songwriting credits together with composing credits, they earn more compared to other groups. Also, they are the most famous girl group among the general Korean population, they are featured a lot in shows, ost, etc. They are probably the highest earning Korean Girl group if we look at all the statistics. So they won't have any money issues even if they decide to disband, and will keep earning quite a lot. That's why us moomoos are quite worried about the future of the group although they have said that they will keep making music. But it doesn't stop us from enjoying their music that they have already put out!

I think you're going to have to watch some MMM-TV, behind the scenes and off stage videos to really understand the Solar bullying (I would call it teasing). Imo two of the reasons Solar gets teased are 1) her reactions are so funny that it's hard to resist playing with her, and 2) Solar's ego isn't wrapped up in her position as the leader & eldest member and part of her leadership style is to keep things loose and fun for the other members so she cheerfully goes along with all the nonsense the other members put her up to or inflict on her. Backstage you'll often see Solar being the butt of Moonbyul's mischievous pranks or playing with Wheein to make her laugh - sometimes it seems like Solar's most important job as leader is to be Wheein's windup doll. I think all those things are a reflection of their incredibly close bond as friends & teammates who love, trust and respect each other implicitly. As I hinted in my long comment to your last MMM video, Solar has a multi-faceted personality that includes an astonishing array of dualities, including having a pure, innocent spirit vs being gullible & clueless at times, leading to Moonbyul giving her the nickname Yeba. Yeba is Korean slang for Pretty Fool (from the first syllable of the words for pretty and stupid). Another dualtiy is being strong-willed, determined and competitive vs being a good loser with a warm, generous heart, so the members know they can tease her and entice her into pranks without hurting her feelings. Mamamoo believes they were destined to be best friends even if they led completely different lives and weren't in a group together, as you'll learn in some of the songs on their most recent album. Btw, Solar gets teased a lot but on the other hand the other three members jokingly call themselves The Loser Club and they're not exempt from teasing either. For example, Wheein endlessly gets trolled for being the shortest member in a group of short women, as you'll see when you watch the MV for their comedic hip hop diss track 1 CM/Taller Than You (watch the MV on MMM's yt channel for subtitles). 🤣😂

Forgot to mention that Solar's performance of My Heart Will Go On was the first song of her 20 min solo stage during their 2019 concerts called 4 Seasons F/W. The 2nd song was her self-written & composed ballad Hello. Not many singers have the brass balls to cover an iconic ballad and then follow it up with one of their own. Imo Hello not only held its own but is a better song, tho I'm extremely biased. From there she continued to ramp up the heat with Fever and Shut Up and Let Me Go and finished by burning down the stage with BTS's Fire, including an already legendary final moment I won't spoil.

"Who knows?" We do, Sir. We knew the moment we recommended Mamamoo :p Another warm welcome to the crazy ride, crazy due to crackheadery but also because of the sheer amount of content these grossly talented hardworking ladies spoil us with. As with Dreamcatcher there's behind the scenes stuff, compilations, lives, amazing b-sides, AND solo stuff from all members so you'll never be short of music or things to react to! MMM pick on their leader while DC go for their maknae, but in reality /no one/ would mess with Solar or Gahyeon lmao, they're capable of incapacitating someone with their laughs alone :') Both groups should come with a headphone warning, these girls are LOUDDDD so look after your ears haha.

It’s only been in recent years where writing your own stuff and taking part in the production of music/albums has become a trend. Kpop in its early days, and even up until probably 2012-13, was heavily manufactured and that’s why the genre, as a whole, has recieved so much criticism in the past from both foreign and domestic markets. A lot of kpop idols receive slack from people in their own country due to the exact reason you mentioned: companies telling their artists what to sing, how to sing it, what to wear, how to dance, etc. Mamamoo is one of the groups, in my opinions at least, that turned the trend into somewhat of a standard amongst newly debuting groups and now, self-produced groups are pretty easy to find.

when they come to Brazil, and sang in front of me... i got so emotional because they helped me a lot... they always give me a smile when I need and it was a dream becoming true when I hug each one.... Byul was so cute and so cool with me... Hwasa started crying with me btw lol

Solar's name is a play on the word for Sun so I think you could pronounce it either way. Her youtube video she sings Solarsido and that sounds more SolAR less SolER. Also Byul means star in Korean so Moonstar is acceptable

To add on, the most correct pronunciation would be Solar (how we say the solar system) or So La (how we say the solfege). I hear reactors saying SolaR but the R is meant to be more silent, like when people say Sistar, it should sound like Sistah.

HOLY SHIT WAIT I JUST REMEMBERED THE MAMAMOO VOCAL ACAPELLA QUEENS VIDEO POR FAVORRRR add that to your list to react to if you haven't!! I'm honestly so excited more vocal coaches and people are getting into/learning about mamamoo. They're by no means now (in 2020) a "small" group (like Dreamcatcher) in Korea, but I do think they're somewhat underappreciated for having so much personality and talent and content. Mamamoo got freedom to choose what to wear and it's really important for idols when they're performing, coz there's a lot of other idols who had difficulty with clothes given by stylish...

Mamamoo is one of the reason that make me believe that Dreamcatcher can be a Big/popular group in the future.. Dreamcatcher only need a chance to perform on the big stage, so people will wake up from their sleeping as MAMAMOO did..

Most of KPOP songs (promote song/or song that have performance on music show/ main song) are written by professional while side track in album can also include song that the artist (idol) themselves are part of composing team. There also can be promote song that written by idol as well just not that common. (Ex. Super junior- “one more chance” written by Donghae a member of the group)

Oh and in case you didn’t know, a little fun fact, Moonbyul (Moonstar) was going to be a vocalist at first, she wasn’t supposed to be a rapper. But because Mamamoo had three strong vocalists already, the company told her to become a rapper. So she started from the bottom and is now a successful rapper and her vocals are gaining a lot of recognition now!!

Yup yup, sometimes songs are given by their companies already written up and divided for each members. Idk about other groups but usually there is one member who's very active in songwriting, but for mmm they all took parts sometimes on the album (moonbyul writes all her rap parts, solar writes & composes some songs).

About writing songs, some artist are just really lucky to be able to write their own songs whenever they want (just like mamamoo) because some (maybe most) companies don't allow their artists with song writing and maybe also concept making.

It's okay that you compare other kpop singers/rappers to others. Dami and Moonbyul are my favorite rappers and they're right at the top for me. It's so hard to choose between the two, in my opinion. Mamamoo is my favorite kpop group, they really are unique , they can do everything, they sing, rap, dance, they are very talented, there is no doubt about it, my favorite is Hwasa but it is impossible not to love everyone Mamamoo

I wasn't ready for "I love you too" to start playing in that video. That song always gets me emotional. Especially when I remember the clips of them performing that in their concert when messages from their parents started playing on the big screen. The members didn't know that was going to happen and they all lost it on stage. Moomoos lost it, too. So emotional

I would say its becoming more common that idols write their own music. Before it wasn't so common and very few idols participated in the process. Its nice that the industry is changing more.
