Becoming a German First World War soldier | All Quiet on the Western Front

“He is the most typical young boy who has to go to war you can imagine…he is just like all of us, if we would have gone to war.”
Feliz Kammerer, star of Oscar-tipped ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’, explains to Mariella Frostrup how he approached the role of a German First World War soldier - including with the use of Excel spreadsheets.

Actually there is such a thing. And don't forget Austria was part of Germany for a long time, so I don't thinks there is much of a difference in terms of ethnicity. I live in the Netherlands and there are times when I can tell someone is german. But usually germanic people look a like. Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Zweden etc are Germanic people.

this is such a good interview especially that bit of using excel spreadsheet😂😂 i love the host and her questions! most interviews usually have cut and dry interactions, but she seems genuinely interested by his insight and is good at letting the conversation flows. Felix is so adorable (can't believe he's 27 tbh. he looks like teenager), hopefully we'll see him again in other great movies!

Its a great book, I first read it an school, the title in German is "Im Westen nichts Neues" which was a communique to high command describing what happened to the Unit Paul was in on the day Paul dies. it translates as "Nothing new in the west" a day when nothing of note occurred, implying I guess that his death was meaningless. I haven't seen this movie yet and look forward to it. I have seen the 1930 one a few times and the TV movie with Ernest Borgnine, who played Kat. Interestingly there is a sequel few people are aware of, "The road back" (Der Weg zurück). A film was made in 1937, but didn't do as well. Its set a few weeks later at the end of the war and is about the fall of the German empire.

Felix is great in his interviews for this movie. He's mature in discussing the film and definitely articulate. Most actors (under 30) aren't intelligent enough to discuss a difficult subject, but Felix can and does so! I watched the movie when it first came out on Netflix. I didn't even see the trailer beforehand. I thought I can leave the movie on and fall asleep to it. Nope, that didn't happen! I watched it thru as it caught my attention. I usually don't like war movies because my maternal grandparents were killed in a war that got out of hand, causing my mom and her siblings to be orphans at such a young age. I'm glad this movie was spoken in German since the previous TV movie was NOT! I watched this in German with English subtitles and didn't switch the dubbing. Several times, I temporarily took off the subtitles for a more dramatic effect. This was a good film. Some small details in the film were not in the book but it does add more emphasis to the situation happening.

This is a conversation I crave to have some day 🥺. I have a strange obsession with WWI and WWII and it's strange because I was born a century later in a 3rd world African country and no one else here is interested in those wars since they didn't really concern us and I literally have no one to talk to about my favorite topic 😔. Anyway, great interview. I became a fan of Felix from his performance alone but his humbleness and appreciation of history and art won me over even more.

I have lived 5 decades and watched war films in both English and German all the way (am Danish, but have lived many years in both German and English speaking countries). In recent times, films in English have become better at letting the Germans speak German and without the too thick German accent when speaking English (some Germans do have that accent, but many don't). For smaller roles in English however, they often find some English speakers who are good at sounding German, but then the picture falls apart when they make grammatical mistakes... :)

As usual in these cases, it's a movie that borrows the title from a famous book, but has little to do with it. It looks like a response to "1917". From the point of view of entertainment it's fine, and the setting is quite good. It does show some of the ethos and pathos of war in the trenches in WW I, but isn't historically accurate. The punch line of the book, which gives it its name is that the soldier died with the last bullet shot in the war, and the military report was "All quiet on the Western Front." You certainly don't get the idea in the movie.

I watched several reviews from historicans about the movie on youtube. Basicly what everybody said is that it's some kind of comic action movie. Historically not acurate in the details and actions of people. For example it is not true that the soldiers shot surrendering soldiers in general like it is shown in the movie. It gives a wrong view of the history. Not a good movie in my opinion.
