Becoming a Digital Nomad in Your 50's - Palle Bo, The Radio Vagabond [Badass Digital Nomads Ep 7]

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Not so long ago, Palle Bo would look at a world map in his kitchen and place pins on the countries he wanted to visit. But he didn't want to wait until he retired to start living his life, so he became a digital nomad at 51 years old. A few years later, he's officially been to over 73 countries and he's still 10 or 15 years away from the traditional retirement age. It just goes to show that it's never too late to start living the life you want!

I'm 50, my youngest kid turned 18 a few months ago. I've bought a ticket from NYC to Amsterdam in October 2021!! And I'm bringing my dog too!! I'm planning Eastern Europe, then Ireland for a year on a working holiday visa - I am graduating with my master's degree in education in June from University of Washington!!! Ireland is one country that doesn't discriminate by age on the working holiday visa!!! I've got the same plan...travel for 10-15 years until my three kids start having grandkids!! SO NICE to have a story about an "over 50" digital nomad. Thanks!!!!

i am 62. In my experience friends, family and spouses are not your allies in life unless you are towing the line and keeping your head down. This is also known as self-denial. The denial of self. And if you are like me and have family member(s) who present as psychopaths it becomes a real systemic problem. Strangers, on the other hand, have never given me any trouble. Casual and professional aquaintences have been the greatest source of material and emotional support as it turns out. Cant wait to start meeting all the nice strangers out there in the nomad life.

Hey Palle and Kristin, I already told Kristin that, at almost 70 years old, I am decided to move around the world, starting early next year, when winter is fading and spring is springing up almost everywhere. Family responsibilities have kept me from going after this long-held dream, but it is never too late. In addition, thank God, and thanks to my strict regimen of fitness, I am healthier than most young adults who are 24 years or a little older. Kristin, I really find you so interesting, so I look forward to connecting with you some time in the near future. I would love to listen to your sage advice on how to make the happiest journeys through this truly beautiful planet. God bless, protect us all.

This my definition of a digital nomad. A nomad is someone who carries his or her home to other places, who is highly mobile, even across borders, focused on the enjoyment of life without social or employment restrictions or without being subjected to political or national boundaries. Someone is highly open minded about the world, other cultures and ways of life. Digital is a computing term, is a mathematical term, as in digital banking, which implies having routine access to money, steady cashflow, lots of megabytes, telecommuting, being business oriented, high self motivation, focused on success through technology and business savvy or savoir faire, and on practicing environmentally responsible behaviors and lifestyles.

I always took my vacations to travel, and I always kept my base. I travelled from age 20 to 73, and I worked from 7-70, I retired in 2001 , and again at 2012. I am contented to do virtual travel, continue my journals since age 15 to the present 79th year. I am so happy this Scamdemic and poison jaband masks were not needed, or I would have stayed home in the USA, but had to leave Chicago. Earthquakes were the deal breakers for Acapulco, and Singapore was too expensive.

Encouraging talk! I am 50, my only son is married and I have a corporate job that I do not enjoy. I am researching all the options on how I can live a nomad life, or at least being able to supplement my income while traveling now that I am healthy enough and can enjoy life. I get all kind of criticism from my family, friends and even my husband who think I am crazy as I should wait to be retired to do that. The future is not guaranteed, who knows if I will get there, right? I am not happy with I am doing now, even at the point to get a promotion at a the management level and increase my income by 20%. I feel that I am just following the norm at the cost of my happiness. I know that a solid plan must be in place before doing this. Feel free to advise.

This is just the third of your videos I’ve seen Kristin and I really like your style of presenting and asking questions. It’s very relaxed and real. I’m only halfway through this one, and I’m curious what happened to the person he fathered the kids with? She’s only mentioned at the beginning as one of the excess “things” he left behind, so I naturally felt kind of sorry for her. But maybe nomading’s not her cup of tea?

Fascinating discussion. I fit into the home-base-but-love-to-travel category, but it was good to hear these perspectives. An attractive personality must go a long way, though, in making this a success, and I imagine that less magnetic types could find themselves with neither friends nor funds in short order. There's an art to it, no doubt. That's why so many of us opt for the secure and safe job, the more ostensibly predictable, despite the regrets.

I'm 71 and taking a break from digital nomad. I have been in this mode for 10 years...and the itch is attacking. This past year I focused on getting my health to the "it's great" stage so I could handle the rigors of travel. As soon as these covid limitatioins are lifted, I'm back on the road. I've thought of doing a podcast, or vlog...or blog, but then tell myself..."who wants to hear from you? you're just old now'. :(

I just started my digital nomad life. Was basically forced into it because I was just stuck in the US being able to work remotely but not making nearly enough to live. That said, what I don't hear any of these videos ever mention is this lifestyle can be extremely lonely and unless your retirement age or you have a lot of money to invest then the visa is a huge issue. Not being able to stay most countries for more than 3 months is exhausting and stressful and combined with being lonely it can break you

Amazing, inspiring :-) I am from a little country in Central Europe and after 21 years in the same company I left my safety job and I want to enjoy every day with traveling, learning, and a new experience. So I´m in Hawai´i now. I just have some trouble with my job, I still don´t know what can I do. :-( But it´s not a barrier, it´s just a period of life and I believe I am able to bring some added value with my knowledge :-) Thank you for inspiration again. @@TravelingwithKristin Thank you, Kristin. I am from Europe from Slovakia, but I choose Hawai ´i for my next life because I am a summer girl :-) But the situation here is really difficult - with Covid and also with working visa restrictions. Therefore I started to think about other possibilieties, other islands, other online jobs. I have a sabbatical now, but I am a banker - I worked in that area for 21 years. But I have a lot of experience with projects and processes design, change management, crisis management. I have experience in the human resources area also - with hiring, onboarding, training and development. Therefore I am thinking about my own online business as a consultant, coach... I created an account on your website, and I want to learn from your experience as much as possible. I am open to all interesting opportunities, so I hope we can be in touch. You are a really inspiring person, and I will be glad to follow your steps.

Like your video. I have traveled to some 40 countries. I enjoyed each one in their own way they all make you grateful for being able to visit. I am now 82 and wonder if there are videos similar to yours that address people over 80 that are in still serviceable shape but everyone over 80 has a little slower reaction time to things. The thing that I disliked about traveling single when I was younger was meeting people and having good conversations with them. 40 years ago English was not as wide spoken in Asia or Latin America. I did learn to speak Australian which is a laugh in itself. The advice you have given people about traveling slow is right on. Some people say that they have seen France a.k.a. been to Paris for a week. English is now spoken in a great mini areas. How to meet people and enjoy their culture when you’re 80+.?..thanks Bob

Hi Kristin, thanks for all your very interesting videos! I live in North Carolina and have serious plans now to travel down to Mexico, Central and South America as a digital nomad. I'm turning 52 this month btw so it was nice to see an older guy in this video! Anyway, I have a question unrelated to age :) Do you have suggestions on how to best solve the cell phone situation? Are most digital nomads sticking to apps such as WhatsApp, Skype, LINE, etc. and restrict their use to WiFi hotspots to call their families? I looked at Verizon international data and voice plans but I'm finding them ridiculously expensive so that's non-starter for me it seems. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!

Regarding your question, I use T-Mobile so I can keep a US number in one cell phone on a month-to-month plan (and it includes international data but very slow). I also keep a second cell phone unlocked that I can use local SIM cards in. I also use SkyRoam as a WiFi hotspot for a back-up connection. Here's my link: bit.ly/SkyRoam Hope this helps!

Without a plan for retirement, how do you live without being a burden to others? After 60, you are likely to get more health related issues and may not be able to always have a nomadic life style (or even work).

  • @c123ray

    @c123ray

    9 ай бұрын

@slhermit, My main need to go abroad is for health care bc I've been written off as having no value even as an elite athlete from age 5 through age 41 w/ three degrees, three teacher credentials, + tons of skills. Through the escalated withholding of medical care over decades, I was made into a person w/ multi complex disabilities, extremely limited mobility w/ also the non provision of prescribled palliative curative care including much needed pain management to prescribed palliative care until hospice care is needed. There may be more due to withheld follow up diagnostic testing for 3 types of cancer. ER to all forms of healthcare are withheld. I'm 59. This obviously isn't what I want for myself. This isn't even the culture I want to die in. I just want to be treated humanely. I also can't afford to live in the USA. Almost everything I owned was just destroyed by 4 months of sewage back ups + floodings further harming other chronic, acute, recurrent, to endemic infections as part of disabilities effecting my respiratory - pulmonary, + immune system, + I can't afford housing + low income housing which I've been repeatedly found qualified for - just liike all those mentioned forms of medical care - and even a specialty electric wheelchair - have been withheld. An ortho surgeon implanted medically contraindicated devices including where they never should be placed without requesting or obtaining permission despite 100% of ppl sustaining massive disc ruptures within 5yrs. The surgeon graduated valedictorian from top notch undergrad + med school, so it seems to be a case of what a Canadian writer wrote about in the NY Times as being "intentional medical harm designed to shorten the lives of ppl w/ disabilities + to force an unbearable or impossible existence. Once the massive disc ruptures occurred that's when medical care intensively began to be withheld w/ the surgeon + primary care provider of then 23 yrs patient dumping me within 24 hrs of each other. I didn't know for years the extent of what the surgeon had done to me followed ny even much worse. Getting overseas would be the biggest challenge followed by severely impaired mobility w/ the discs in my spine compressing my dried out + easily severable spinal cord w/ widespread nerve damage + pain which is severe to agonizing. I always loved travel, meeting ppl from all over the world, experiencing new cultures, traditions, foods, scenery, + extreme to outdoor sports, + activities plus walking all day exploring the beauty of a new place + having engaging conversations w/ other backpackers as well plus sharing a flat together long term. I know my situation is well beyond the wheelchair travel as prospective digital expat, but I'd really like to know if that is a reality explored on this channel yet along w/ medical tourism to regain quality of life + one's humanity. Thank you so much.
