Everybody calls the music "gypsy jazz", it's the only search word you can use to find good KZread videos with that music. No way around it!

Gj vs Bbop. Gj is easier on the ear. Harmonically speaking. Bbop guitar is a small niche compared to Gj. In general most Bbop players have a general disdain for guitar. Jazz guitar as I see it really shines on Standards. These songs are the foundation of many Gj players. Swing is the common thread.

Very interesting video, Christiaan. I think it's because of the different attitudes between bebop and gypsy jazz that I didn't start getting "good" at guitar until I got into gypsy jazz. With bebop, I couldn't find an entry point for someone like me who was starting at a low level. The few times I tried playing with good players I was shamed and humiliated. In contrast, when I started playing gypsy jazz, I was immediately able to meet and play with high level players and get immersed in the music. At the first festival I attended, I got to jam with John Jorgenson and Jason Anick. I sounded terrible but they were encouraging to me.

Gypsy Jazz is a type of folk music. Heartfelt. Moving, danceable, aggressive, mellow, comes from the heart and the need to express. Connects people through everyday life, dances, laughs and sorrows. Be Bop is far more complicated (on purpose) and thus academic and competitive and comes from the mind and the need to compete and impress. More or less. Gypsy is an originally european style, Be Bop a northern american one, launching as a rejection to Swing and Dixieland jazz (which as types of more primitive folk music are really close to gypsy ("gypsy swing" etc). Be Boppers that wanted to go back to types of more roots based, folky, simple and heartfelt styles, launched funk, free/ ethnic jazz and such so the circle got complete.

A long time ago I read somewhere that Bebob actually came into being this way: some of the now legendary jazz giants were regularly taking part in jam sessions at some locations (New York, Harlem?) They were annoyed by many of the lesser gifted musicians who also tried to join these sessions, so in order to keep them away, or push them out, they purposely created tunes with very complicated and fast chord changes. So the gate keeping Christiaan observed in the present probably has roots in the past. The jazz scene in the US those days was extremely competitive, it was a struggle for survival; making a living by playing music. Also those Bebob musicians as far as I understand, were most often not very nice towards each other, and the concept of "friendly" jam sessions that many of us are familiar with today didn't exist there. The US has altogether been a different place from Europe in this respect; much more geared towards competition. I also remember having heard that Django did not feel at home in the American jazz scene when he stayed there.

What bebop players tend do is think A-7 F#-7b5 B-7b5 E7 x2 on top of just a- to create moviment

thats an interesting topic. i myself had a hard time to get that difference in my playin. i came from strictly jazz bebob context and whenever i tried to play in jazz manouche swing style i didnt get it at all. it sounded stiff and awkward. the big change came when i really sat down and learned my first django solo tone for tone. plus a lttle help by some free tutorial videos about right hand or triads chromatics etc. ,from people like you christiaan!

Yes, what you have experienced I have heard many times before from bebop players that I encountered. Good that you found a way to solve it. Learning a Django solo is a sure fire way!

What would be great ? A debate with a few of your contemporaries over musical competition (ie snobbery and exclusion). It was rife in my teens (mid to late 1970's) even in unknown local rock music scene. I really enjoyed your ramblings and well done on the new lighting. Bring on the book Christiaan !

Really like the high saturation lighting in the vids. HI ! CRISTIAAN ....if your book comes on sale I shall buy it ...with pleasure . I have many ...but more were used occasionally and I never worked hard on that stuff . From my experience I can state your analysis of both style (bop v/s manouche) is very accurate . I ' m glad you have few words for Pasquale Grasso ......who masters the widest classical practice and knowledge which irrigates his phenomenal jazz playing . As a winner of the MONTGOMERY's competition he certainly have a lot of admirers ( I was one since the first moment I discover him on stage 6 or 7 years ago ) ....and few jealous among the guitar community . Barney Kessel had no kind and respectful judgement towards DJANGO .....poor Barney making certainly a real wrong note ! YOUR playing is excellent and you illustrates wondefully your rundown . here in FRANCE the DJANGO's style is still well alive .....and in demand . You can hear the best sometimes . My friend JEROME BRAJTMAN masters this style he shares with gipsies but can play classical with the quatuor or bebop - hardbop and the standard repertoire . Pascal MARTINEZ is the most eclectic player , pop ,blues , latin , bop ......with encyclopedic references . For my own practice I like to refer to Wes MONTGOMERY .....MUSIC .....beyond guitar ....and those fascinating melodic bop lines , single notes , octaves , chords , he delivers with irresistible groove . Have the nicest year 2020 with Yours .

Christiaan, I'm glad I found your channel and thanks for this great lesson. You mentioned something nobody really talks about, which is that someone's phrasing and improv are very strongly influenced by the technique they use. There's a certain mystique that I had bought into that good players play "what they hear", and that's true, but one's technical choices make certain things much more likely!

Why on earth did you all spend so much time feeding an obvious troll? Even Django himself was perfectly at ease with his music being described as Gypsy Jazz. If he had taken exception to it, I doubt he would have remained silent about it.

Your time feel has changed! For the better I might add! Much more aggressive attack! Have you perhaps been working with a metronome set on the 2 and 4? I have found that really gives my playing a swing and bite to my timing. Well, it did before I got to dystonia.

Thanks, I worked with metronome on 2 and 4 my entire life. But guitar was of course pretty new for me and playing with a backing track on camera to demonstrate a very specific thing is a peculiar skill in itself. I'm very used to it now but it was super hard for the longest time.

@@ChristiaanvanHemert well, it's paying off. I can feel how your playing is now becoming a lot more solid. It's like you're developing a guitar feel that is maybe a different feel to your great violin playing. I have heard there is a softer attack with violin playing when addressing a note. Perhaps you are sort of shedding this now with your guitar playing, as the guitar is much more a percussive instrument with a shorter beat transient. It certainly sounds and feels like that from my perspective. Keep going buddy it's great the amount of content you're putting out these days. Keep swinging buddy! ;-) p.s. oh, and congratulations on the book!

I was expecting a sword fight, but with guitars. This was pretty good too though.

Hi Christiaan. Nice analysis of GJ and bebop. Interesting thoughts about the inclusiveness of GJ and the more exclusive attitude of bebop players. Back in the day when I was attending a lot of GJ festivals, I too couldn't help but notice the inviting atmosphere. Someone who is Gypsy and a guitar player said, "If you play guitar, you are my friend." I don't think you'll see too much of that in the bebop world. I use to say that the reason why GJ guitarists are so inclusive is that there was only one Django Reinhardt -- and no one else will ever be him. That make everyone else -- from Stochelo and Bireli to me and the guy just starting -- first and foremost, fans and enthusiasts of Django Reinhardt. As enthusiasts we are excited to meet fellow fans, interested in their lives and happy to play with them. Gypsy Jazz has brought me some of the most memorable times in my life and I found much warmth and joy from the culture and generous people I met during my journeys. Good luck with your book my friend. I look forward to reading and learning from it!

I don't think B.L or C.E ( gipsies players ) are more "inclusive " ( "opened." ).....than bop players as were JIMMY GOURLEY or RENE THOMAS . Once I met JIMMY and told him I tried to play "YOU ' VE CHANGED " .....a ballad that haunted me . A few days later I received a letter from JIMMY who had written the chord progression ! He added kindness and care to his natural fair play ....and Buddy MONTGOMERY told me WES was the finest person . i don't think you 'll find that "élégance " among " the crowding crooks in metal and rock .....

Bireli destroys in both styles.Theres even a video of him playing metal wich would put 99% of "shredders" to shame.

I think I know the video you mean, Birelli was great, then again how can he not be. The other two musicians though... I got the strong sense they didn't really 'get' metal. It was like someone shredding out their mind on a very timid backing track. One of the many reasons why I feel jazz's influences on metal are often portrayed better when they're in the rhythmical aspect of music instead.

How would you compare the specific styles of Charlie Christian and Django Reinhardt? I am curious if the modern bebop or gypsy jazz is more different than the earlier music. 🤔

your Bebop is good, not to take away from gypsy jazz. I like your insight on rest stroke picking. I remember seeing Chuck Berry and Earl King, both rock legends up close, using down/rest strokes for the most part just like gypsy picking

Great video. It would be awesome to see some videos about Tal Farlow and Jimmy Raney. When I think of bebop guitar, those are two that come to mind. Tal playing "All The Things You Are" at about 290 BPM is no joke.

Jimmy Bruno uses a lot of rest stroke economy picking. 'Unit Seven' on youtube is a good showcase for him with stuff to steal that should be good for gypsy pickers, he also does rest UPstrokes ( like some of the Bluegrass guys, Brian Sutton for example) but integrated into the style a bit more than most people and not just a special effect for reverse raking (like Bireli and Giniaux). I am REALLY looking forward to the book by the way and will of course buy and cherish a physical copy as soon as possible. PS If there is one exercise guaranteed to get ALTERNATE PICKING together in a short time it is the paradiddle DUDD UDUU. Try it with rest strokes on one string (say the B string) to get the gist of it (great for strengthening the upstroke) then (whilst keeping the beat) switch to alternating with the G string with the G string taking all of the upstrokes and forcing you to abandon the rest stroke (some people call this inside picking since the pick stays between the two strings) . Next alternate restroke picking on a single string (DUDD UDUU) with alternate picking with the E string taking all of the upstrokes ('outside picking'). Once that's smooth take the tempo way down and repeat the last note of each group of four as a very swift grace note and you'll get a flamadiddle ( uDUDD dUDUU ) and this should push your reflexes even at very slow tempos.Give it a try ! It it should take a few years off the task of getting used to switching between alternate picking and rest stroking. Tedious as that was to read it has nothing on Troy Gradie's goal of obfuscating the art of picking in a thousand hours of nonsensical analysis. The exercise I just outlined contains most of all there is to it. Ten minutes a day for a week should yield surprising results if you are super conservative with tempo. i don't think a pick is the alpha § omega to play guitar . If I refer to classical , latin , flamenco , country ,rock, jazz ,you'll find lot of the best ones have forgotten the pick and the single idea of it ....which you can see like a reduced prothesis . Look at Yamandu Costa playing with Galliano and symphonic orchestra de PARIS .

I especially don't get the flamadiddle part, and I have trouble muting strings at high tempos using this technique, so I'm worried I may be ruining my own practice through misinterpretation

I have been listening to this music and playing little else since Seresta came out. Like me, and that is why I love it, most of the community on these channels approach the expression of these rather varied group of extraordinary artists with humility and curiosity. Ninine, in 'Children of the Wind' says, answering a direct question, that Gipsy is not pejorative to him but it regards it rather as a general term, Gitanes. @Rhythmicons: I don't know on what authority you are here lecturing everybody on political correctness. Even with a couple of quips in latin, your effort feels rather misplaced , unconvincing and most of all, unnecessary.

Music is the only language to cross racial barriers, so why not just enjoy it?
