Beauty and the Beast 2017 Compliment Sandwich

In this version wasn't the prince technically reasonable to reject the rose like maybe he was just like "No thanks I have a whole garden full of roses. Wait is that one of my roses"

Ooh, preferably, one where you sort of hear all the talking and gasps and general sounds of terrified realisation fade away but the camera is still so focused on Belle and her reactions that you don't notice, and it's not until she has a short pause in her sobs, presses her head against the Beast's chest, and opens her eyes a bit, looking back to the castle for comfort and sympathy, does the moment get absolutely quiet just so she and the audience realise no one is there anymore.

The problem with Lefou was not his gayness or whatever... it's the fact that they felt the need to make him a completely different character. Lefou was the idiot in the first one, and the only person more despicable and pathetic than Gaston. His name means "the fool" or "the idiot". But they made him sympathetic and smart because... he is gay I guess Also, Josh Gad is annoying except for in the movie 21.

Maybe I should bring the wardrobe downstairs so she can be near her husband." The only way he would've known to do that is if one of them directly asked him if he could please move them closer, and it makes sense that they wouldn't think to do that, what with him being their asshole boss and all.

When the movie addressed the old plot-hole about why no one had noticed that the prince of the land hadn't been seen for 10 years (part of the Enchantress' curse was that his subjects forgot about him,) I thought for a while that they were also going to address the fact that the Beast was a child when he was cursed, seeing as we hear about what a cruel jerk his father was, and, in the opening sequence, we see a boy running towards the prince and the Enchantress. I seriously thought there was going to be a bombshell reveal that it was actually the Beast's father who had offended the Enchantress, and his son had taken on the curse to save him, probably assuming that his father's love would lift it or something, until Father proved his jerkishness and the Beast became bitter and resentful. But no, in this version the Beast just wasn't a child when he was cursed, and the whole asshole father angle was just something to make Belle pity him, because we all know that pity = love.

Of course he’s not gonna let a stranger into him home. Screw manners, if you were a young prince and a ragged stranger approaches you, you shut the door! That was the big secret that Maurice never wanted to talk about because he loved her but had to save their daughter from the disease. On the other hand I liked that the beast was not illiterate with no manners but just an asshole :U ...yet they kept that part where he eats the soup like a dog making everything they said before about him just nonsensical. it made sense in the cartoon because he was an illiterate beast with no manners ._.

Longfellow Kristen Stewart was like that because Bella is like that and it gave her a bad reputation. It's actually nothing on Kristen's acting. She's a fantastic actress in other films if her character actually has a personality to work with. And ones she doesn't have contempt for. Watson, and this is a hill I will die on until she proves me wrong, cannot act. It's always obvious she's acting. Everything is exaggerated and disconnected with the scene or her expression or what just happened a few seconds ago. It all feels forced and fake. Even her supposedly natural laughter like in _Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix_ when talking to Harry and Ron about Cho sounded so forced.

Like belle didn’t show any sort of inventing prowess besides making the laundry machine, and she gave her dad that one wrench he needed one time. Like I would’ve actually enjoyed seeing her be a more well rounded character, she is not only literate and loves stories, but she is extremely smart and can build things and learned from her dad. Also....Lafou isn’t gay. Like he dances with one guy at the very end of the film. Other than that he just kind of acts a little campy...I was very disappointed

  • @gokinsmen

    @gokinsmen

It was never meant to be a big deal. Stupid internet outrage made it into one. What happened is that Bill Condon briefly mentioned in one of the 100+ interviews he did for the movie that there would be a "gay moment" for LeFou. This was partly done as a tribute to Howard Ashman, who was gay and died of AIDS. Bigots then freaked out about Disney forcing "liberal propaganda" on them, and more clever bigots complained that they didn't mind gay characters, they were just annoyed that Disney made a big announcement about it -- which they never did. Then came the progressive backlash because the movie didn't go far enough with its LGBT characters, wondering why Disney made such a big deal of something so underwhelming. Even though, again, they never made a big deal about it in the first place. It was one quote in an interview reported by the media that the internet freaked out about.

After that, it became a "big deal" and reporters started asking more about it.

I don’t know- I think the written lyrics were good, but the song wasn’t sung very well by the voice actor-his voice isn’t that emotional or invested-sounding. And it wasn’t shot very well. The camerawork didn’t really carry the energy, it’s just slow shots of him walking at the same medium distance. The emotion felt like it had to be imagined by the viewer with the lyrics. Good song, not great execution.

For me, translating the story from animation to (mostly) live action made it seem weirdly shrunken and impotent. Belle, Maurice, LeFou, and Gaston were all revealed to be kind of humdrum. And the Beast seemed more persnickety than ferocious. He was giving off a real Frasier Crane vibe to me.

The fully-human characters suffered the most in this respect, and "Gaston" was a perfect illustration. In the original, that whole tavern seems to come alive with music and motion and chaos. In the new one, it's just some people singing a song in a bar. Like if you were in the corner, nursing a beer or whatever, you might not even look up. "Oh, it's somebody's birthday or something," you might think.

I liked how the curse was handled, that the castle was being destroyed too and that they weren’t just gonna be living furniture forever, that they would turn into inanimate objects and the beast would become just a mindless animal. It added another layer of suspense and a bit more of a harsh deadline and definitely raised the stakes. I definitely cringed at Emma’s singing though. I hated the autotune on Emma Watson. Since the other actors sang just fine without it, especially performers like Josh Gad and Luke Evans (yes I know they are theatre trained) who don't need it, just made it all that more jarring to see that complete contrast of quality singing. I know they hired Emma because of her values, following and enthusiasm to play the role (and I'm a fan of her myself), but it was a big elephant in the room that she couldn't sing. And she cut off iconic long-held notes in a very awkward way. At least, she could have been directed in a way that could've disguised her vocal weaknesses somehow by making it very "musical theatre" with a buttload of talking-delivery parts (which may get old really quick), I don't know. I was just very disappointed about that, as someone who admires her as a person. I HATED Belle's line: "I may be a farm girl, but I'm not simple". It sounded very condescending towards simple people. I'm sure there are plenty of simple people in the world who are just plain, good, genuinely nice people. Does she get extra points for being complex? Does this new character of Belle think herself above the masses? (Well it was kinda hinted in the animated version but anyway, I didn't like that about her character then either.) The line was unnecessarily unkind and used in a disparaging way. I don't even consider myself simple yet I was very offended by that little remark. A change I disagreed with and disliked was how they handled the first impressions of Gaston. While he did eventually became my favourite character because I genuinely enjoyed every scene with him, a big step-up from the animation, I still have a problem with his introduction: It wasn't established immediately that Gaston was a jerk and completely unsuited to Belle, which they perfectly achieved in the animation version in such a short span of time. This is important because the audience needs to agree wholeheartedly with Belle's continued rejection of him. But he's initially portrayed as someone who COULD be decent; he looked like he was genuinely trying his best but just being clumsy at it, which was almost endearing. We need more of a telltale, immediate clue that despite his efforts, he doesn't deserve Belle's time. It's problematic bc live-action Gaston shows the potential to learn and improve (before he committed any irredeemable acts on screen, which wasn't made obvious enough to the characters in-universe and the audience that it is something he is prone to doing). If the live-action Gaston, before committing said acts, is deemed by Belle and the audience as a hopeless case, then shouldn't that apply to the Beast too? So then, if the Beast could reform, then it isn't impossible that Gaston could have, too, and Gaston was denied that change. Not necessarily by Belle, bc she has the right to say no, but that the narrative didn't treat him as kindly and you get the feeling that things could have ended up differently, until they showed us later what he's capable of with Maurice in the forest. So I get what you mean that the writing of his character made him BOTH and NEITHER certain ways. Aside from these 3 main points, I really enjoyed the movie and went to see it twice in the cinema. It did fix up things but changed some things that didn't need to be fixed and so still wasn't perfect. But there's still a lot of good in there for me to sit down and enjoy it more than once.

Then at the end when theyre all having the victory waltz Lefou gets thrown into the guy who liked the women's clothes arms and they lock eyes in a way that seems like love at first sight or something. It was very quick so you might have glanced away briefly at that moment. Either way it wasn't all that spectacular, but I still liked that little loose end being tied up for Lefou. The change that bugged me the most is how a lot of the songs had random pauses thrown in, especially right before Ms Potts says "I'll get warm, I'll get hot, heavens sakes, is that a spot?" It’s actually a lot more “Stockholm Syndrome”-y than the original. Considering that in the original, the Beast actually changed his behavior on his own. Honestly, the Beast in this new version didn’t even show any signs of changing anything, he just kind of sits around while Belle just… falls in love with him, as he is, on her own. Plus, in the original, his problem was mostly him being kind of unsocialized and therefore rash and careless with his temper and decisions. It wasn’t him being prejudiced, spiteful, elitist, and vain like in this version. They put in all this supposed work to make the new version look progressive, but they literally ruined the core of the story and made it worse.

Yeah, the whole movie was off. The "Belle" number was awkward and her presence in the village didn't seem disrupting enough. That' same feeling of everything be juuuuuust wrong enough to be noticeable ran through the whole movie.

I didnt like it that much cause it also didnt do anything different. Jungle book and Maleficent went a different route and made changes to the story where needed. Beauty and the beast is almost shot for shot the same

"Be Our Guest" was amazing. I didn't know how they could match the magic of the animated film, but they put something together that was entirely implausible and ridiculous, but also beautiful and mesmerizing. The CGI of the beast was top notch. I never felt like I was watching a guy in a green suit covered in golf balls or whatever. He really seemed to be right in the scenes. Mrs. Potts was incredibly creepy. Actually all of them were. Like "uncanny valley" normally doesn't bother me, but they were just wrong, like horror movie wrong. The "gay moments" in the movie were a brief same sex kiss and the one guy enjoying being put in a fancy dress. Both were classic cartoon gags moved to live action and should not have generated any praise or controversy. It was dumb. The Prince was prettier than Belle once he was back to being human. Also, I loved the period accurate costumes where the guys wore stupid high heeled shoes and wigs and makeup. Welp, that's my comments. Thanks.

LeFou's "gay moment" (I think) was right after Gaston is shown talking to himself in the mirror. Gaston says to himself "I haven't given up on you." LeFou then says "I haven't, either." It happens early enough in the film that just about everything he does can be seen as him "wooing" Gaston, rather than just being an overly sycophantic toady. It wasn't "big", but it did help define his character. Oh, and I love Emma Watson, even if she can't sing. Dan Stevens' singing more than makes up for it.
