    It's called optokinetic head movements, or head stabilization and all birds have this ability. 😊 It allows them to maintain their head position to avoid disrupting their vision while they flap their wings to fly. So cool, right? They also use it on the ground and that's why some birds (think about pigeons and chickens you've seen walking) have a funny head-bob when they walk. It's because they are keeping their head stable between steps. I grew up with chickens (well, we had them on the farm, they weren't like my siblings or anything, lol) and we always had fun with one sitting on our arm, we'd move our arm up and down and the chicken's body moved with it, but their head would stay in one spot. You might also be able to see it when a bird is sitting on a branch or a wire and what they are sitting on moves in the breeze but their head remains still. It's a super cool skill. Birds who are especially good at it are hummingbirds and birds that typically hunt in water, such as Kestrels and Kingfishers. Owls are extremely good at it. Cats and a few other animals also have this skill. Humans have a similar ability, but instead of holding our head in place we can hold our eyes on a fixed point while we walk/run, jump, dive, etc. I hope I didn't bore you to tears. It's one of those things I was always curious about as a kid (those silly chickens!) and after I learned what it was I find it even more fascinating. I was actually just looking for a video to show a demonstration of how it looks to a friend! 🙂🐦

    Or, birds aren't real, and it's a camera stabilized on the head of a drone. Which seems more likely: "optokinetics" or drone? Will this madness never end?

    Imagine the strength that bird is using to balance itself in such strong winds. I watched two American Kestrels doing this today in 20+ mph winds and it was awesome to see them perform that feat!

  • @msdarby515

    @msdarby515

    Жыл бұрын

    Kestrels, Kingfisher, hummingbirds and owls have the most developed head stabilization ability of all the birds. While all birds have a specialized visual system that works in tandem with head stabilization, the birds I just listed have an accessory optic system that is several times larger than other birds. It's so cool. I also enjoy seeing it on a sparrow sitting on a branch swaying in the wind. While the branch and the bird's body are moving its head is not. When I was a kid we had chickens and we would hold them in our hands and when you would move them around their bodies would move but their heads would not. Ever since then I've been fascinated with it and had to learn about it from the old-school Encyclopedia Britannica to learn what it was. LOL Anyway, I hope I didn't bore you, I just find it interesting and since you seem to be a bird watcher and mentioned seeing Kestrel I you might as well. Have a great day!

    Does anybody know why a hawk would drop it down to your level and levitate hovering about twenty yards right in front of you staring at you? I had this very strange experience yesterday well walking on the train tracks . I'm very curious because I'm obviously way too big for a hawk to eat he flew down low almost to eye level with me and seemed to be levitating while flapping his wings in the same place while staring at me for about 15 seconds. If anyone can explain while hawkwood do that I would love to hear it
