Brilliant writing! Brilliant cinematography! This film was truly nothing like I expected, but it was genuinely one of the best movies I've seen. If a revenge journey was art. I hope you enjoyed my Road to Perdition movie reaction & commentary

    I really do think this is one of the most underrated films of the modern era. Brilliantly acted, beautifully filmed and wonderfully written. A great movie that doesn't get the attention it deserves.

    There is a fine line. I think I remember when it came out (I went to see it in the theatres), people thought it was somewhat pretentious Oscar bait. I can't fully disagree, even though I always liked the movie, especially with how much of a departure it was for Hanks. There's always a fine line between being artsy and pretentious and I feel the movie is tiptoeing it.

    @@jaime8318 I don't find it egregiously pretentious myself, hence why I think it's tiptoeing the line. Scenes like the silent execution in the rain for example, with the guy standing dramatically in the middle of it just seem a tiny bit too much? I dunno, it doesn't QUITE seem fully "genuine", for lack of a better word, like the director didn't want a great shot/sequence for the art or gravitas of it, but to impress by checkmarking all the right "dramatic" tropes. Just a personal feeling, really. Again, the line between artful and pretentious is so fine that it is often up to the beholder.

    An unmistakably Thomas Newman score. He’s the guy who scored “Shawshank Redemption”, as well as another classic from director Sam Mendez, “American Beauty”.

    Some of the best talent in the world of cinema working on this one: Sam Mendes as Director Tom Hanks as Sullivan Conrad L. Hall as Cinematographer (his last film) and Thomas Newman with a beautiful Score

  • @tuco74
    @tuco74Ай бұрын

    This is a beautiful father and son tale, that uses well-worn (also well-loved) genre conventions to tell a familiar, and somehow totally unique story. Conrad Hall was the cinematographer. He was one of the masters of the craft. This film was made toward the end of his life, but it's also some of his finest work. You could have a really fulfilling several week project of watching five or six of the films he shot, spanning over the decades, just to study the cinematography. Seeing how elegantly he communicated the stories visually, with light and contrast and shape. Lastly, wanted to point out that the actor who played young Michael was Tyler Hoechlin. He's grown up now and plays Superman in the show "Superman & Lois." For me, it's a lot of fun to think of this as a loose take on the Superman origin story, of coming from tumultuous circumstance, only to settle and grow up on a farm. Certainly, the details are vastly different, but the gist is similar: a man strives and sacrifices everything for the hope that his son will live and become a good man.

    Just watched yours & another of this back to back and every time I'm drowning in tears by the end. The atmosphere, mood, relationships, and especially the soundtrack enhance the sadness and beauty of this well told honest unglamorous depiction of gangster life during this era. A GREAT well-made profound tragic film that ends with hope! Love your reaction & this underrated Hanks & possibly Newman's last film.

    One of my top ten favorite movies. I see it as if Paul Newman is passing the baton of "Movie Everyman" off to the younger Hanks. My favorite film for both actors. Each scene is this entire movie is also like a painting and some seem like reprints of famous ones. The death of Connor, seen in the mirror is reminiscent, for instance , of the death of Marat by Jacques-Louis David. The Thomas Newman score is similarly eerie and magnificent. One of the many times he got snubbed by the Academy Awards for an Oscar. I love the theme he gives Jude Law's character every scene he is featured to give the impression the devil has entered the movie. Lots of recurring themes too like water being involved with every death. Thanks for reacting to it.

    Mike saved Michael from having the same burden he had even if Michael couldn’t do it his dad didn’t want to leave him with that decision. It was good how they stayed at the farm so Michael had good people and a home to go to and taking the dog of course! It’s an amazing film . Hanks and Newman are so good playing against type . Daniel Craig playing a dopey unhinged character before he became my favorite James Bond. Jude Law you just know he’s up to no good but he’s actually one the worst. The film did win for cinematography and Newman was nominated for best supporting actor. Hanks should have been nominated as well. The only drawback is the Jennifer Jason Leigh it’s an underwritten character . I know that often happens in this kind of film but she doesn’t even have the same insights to her family that the lady on the farm picks up on easily. Overall I would recommend watching The Road to Perdition.

    I always thought it was interesting how this movie never got hugely acknowledged, but John Wick did, even though they are extremely similar in structure. I'm sure most people would attribute that to John Wick being an action movie and this being a drama, but personally I think people (including myself, admittedly) perversely find the on-screen death of a dog more damning and appalling than the death of a wife and kid, which we have morbidly enough seen a hundred times over by now.
