Beating the Habit of Cognitive Bias

I spoke with Bo Bennett in a recent episode of the Good Wolf Project. Bo is an expert in rationality and cognitive reasoning. One of the topics we talked about during our conversation was cognitive bias. Bo defines a cognitive bias as a short cut for the brain, which is a great way to look at it. These shortcuts were built into our brains over 100s of thousands of years during a time when humans had plenty of existential threats to pay attention to.
The problem is, we don’t have any of these existential threats around any more. And yet, the cognitive shortcuts that were built in during that time in human history are still with us. So, while they serve as a useful tool to help simplify our world at times, they also distort our reality and make our lives a lot harder than they need to be. So, let’s figure out how we can start to overcome them and gain a new perspective on reality that supports our goals and dreams.
Here’s what we talk about…
Why our brains developed cognitive shortcuts in the first place…
Why humans pay close attention to the negative things in life…
How the brain looks for information to confirm your ideas…
Why you put more weight on information that you’ve heard more recently…
Much more!
