Be harder if he did them in actual order like Nintendo intended. But Tetra wanted to be slightly lazy.

Fun fact: The toads in SMB1 were originally called "Mushroom Retainers" for some odd reason. It's possible the person who wrote the guide was somehow unaware of the updated name, although that would be pretty unlikely given that the name Toad had been in use since at least SMB2.

Miyamoto's vision was shattered when testers continued to demand that the star be made possible. Tragic.

"I've never seen or heard of anyone doing this, but you actually jump on the penguin's head and ride him." That's the only way I've ever known how to cross that bridge. Ever since I was a tiny child. And I didn't have a strategy guide or the internet or friends that played it as well. Yet if you asked me how I figured it out, I really don't remember. Especially when getting on the penguin's head can be a struggle sometimes. Maybe my brother did it or told me.

I did a WHOLE double take at hearing Tetra say “Mazy Haze Cave”.

I have the guide also. It always made me feel like I was in school when the teacher said "Make sure you read the ALL the directions first". Not how a guide should be, lol. The Majoras Mask guide was the same way. Those books are worth it just for the nostalgia and art, honestly.

This should have been the April Fools special...

What the players guide really teaches you is that it's important to expand your vocabulary.

Crazy part of strategy guides was that they rarely directly told you how to beat the game. Mostly they would give you riddles on how to win. They "guide" you in the right direction but you still have to figure out how to get through everything. Yah fun lol

I didn't have the guide, but I managed to figure out how to get the blast to the lonley mushroom star intended when I was like 6 and didn't know English, so I always get pretty pissed when Nathaniel over-hypes the difficulty of figuring it out and doing the cannon shot

Tall, Tall Mountain also has an upward gust thing behind the start area that will blow you a good distance up the mountain

A retainer is a follower or a servant usually to royalty. Retainer is a good word to describe the Toads in this game

I did something similar recently when replaying Super Mario Galaxy. I only performed actions that were expressly taught to me by the game. Not even a long jump or wall kick was allowed until I found the relevant instructional sign. It was pretty neat. I had to restrain myself from using the crazy maneuvers I usually do.

I was just getting into retro collecting and got the strategy guide a couple days before.

I think you should do a challenge where you try to time yourself to see how fast you can complete individual stages in Mario 64. The time ends when you get the last star of the stage. Then try it again to beat your personal best on that stage !
