    Hey thab, would you consider playing, once you have finished all the games, ending with some of the obscure unreleased stuff or demo only n64 games. There isnt many but you can find roms for some games that never got released but were either finished or almost finished. Might be an interesting addition to do after you have finished all the 394.

    I appreciate that you don't skip the "reskins" because it's still interesting to hear about differences that you only pick up on through actual playing. Sometimes its more than just a reskin and a ton of programming was changed. Like the referee pixel art here, is absolutely not in the US version, so a lot was reprogrammed and is unique to the JP version. So it's not a total waste of time. People really like Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 because it has some features that both No Mercy and Wrestlemania 2000 lack, or something like that.

  • @chrisfair11
    @chrisfair118 ай бұрын

    Gracie is probably Rickson who was probably the best legitimate fighter in the world at that time. Japanese pro wrestling is different than USA and Mexican Pro Wrestling. The Japanese had what is called a Hard Style where they were really still hitting each other and trying to keep to some sense of realism. Their training was notoriously nasty because they had to legitimize themselves against Judo, JuiJitsu, Karate, and Kendo practitioners. Some Japanese pro wrestlers would compete in legit MMA fights with a degree of success and toughness in the old days of MMA.

  • @inthefade

    @inthefade

    I just made the comment that I thought it looked more like Rickson, to me. I doubt Royce was really known at the time because he and the other Gracies didn't fight in Japan, at *Pride*, for some years, and I'm unsure whether or not the old school UFC pay-per-views were popular there? I'd love to know, actually.

    Inoki and Andre had a hilarious match, basically Inoki wanted to look good by dominating Andre because just a clean win against him wasn't good enough, so he decided he would simply kick his ass using his martial arts skill, and that went exactly as well as you would expect from someone trying to beat up Andre the Giant.

    3:45 It would make sense they included this in the Japanese version. There's an element of the storytelling in Japanese wrestling where guys get absolutely wailed on but then in the end, in true anime fashion, heroically will their way through the pain using their heart and resolve to still win. To better the effect they lay in very stiff, very painful hits - moreso than what you see usually in America or Mexico Shoutout to the marks in the comments 🤘

    There's a couple FAQs for this game, but yes this is the Japanese version so it has a bunch of Japanese wrestlers. NJPW/IWGP is New Japan Pro Wrestling, Empire Wrestling Federation is actually All Japan Pro Wrestling (both similar organizations but still "Pro Wrestling"), World of Universe is Mixed Martial Artists and "Shoot Style" wrestlers (they had pro wrestling companies that did "worked shoots", the outcomes were pre-determined but the idea was to make it look as real as possible), Dead or Alive Wrestling is the "Extreme" or "Garbage" wrestling organizations of Japan (weapons, barbed wire, broken glass, that type of stuff), and Michinoku Pro is a sort of hybrid of Japanese wrestling and Lucha Libre, high flighting wrestlers who are fast and small. You were sort of correct with Gracie, that's actually Rickson Gracie, his older brother who was considered a pioneer in the sport. And yes, Antonio Inoki and Giant Baba are legendary figures in Japanese pro wrestling, and Terry Funk is a legend in both the US and Japan (he died this Summer).

    8 ай бұрын

    @@Mateus_CarvalhoYeah, there's a few unlockables he didn't get (which is fair, that's not "beating the game"), I believe Toyota is the only female wrestler, you get her by winning the WCW title with Andre which is kinda hilarious/unfortunate, the final match is then Andre the Giant vs a 130lbs woman. You can also get Dynamite Kid, Tiger Mask, Bruiser Brody, Mil Mascaras, Dory Funk Jr, and I can't remember if you win a title with Inoki if it unlocks Ali as his own character, or if he's an alt costume basically. It's been a while.

    @@ADoseofBuckley To be fair about that Andre/Toyota match, you could say the game predicted HUSTLE by a couple of years. I remember a bit of the game but I think every character in VPW 1 was unlocked through winning a tournament as is and the more unique ways to unlock wrestlers would be more of a thing in the sequel, VPW 2. Could be wrong, of course.

Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 and WWF Wrestlemania 2000 are also essentially the same game though VPW2 has way more customization and different fighting styles. WCW/nWo Revenge is kind of it's own beast, as is WWF No Mercy. But all these games are from the same devs. Furthermore, NJPW = New Japan Pro Wrestling, not Neo. Terry Funk just passed away recently.

The Sequel, you literally have to edit the wrestlers to the accurate appearances. The first game the wrestlers appearances are mostly accurate, if you are familiar with them (most of them a Japanese).

    That doesn't look like Royce Gracie, it looks more like Rickson Gracie. Royce and a bunch of the other Gracies fought in the Pride MMA promotions, but I don't believe Rickson ever did fight in Japan? Surely someone else knows better than me. This game surely was long before Sakuraba, "the Gracie Hunter", beat a bunch of them in Pride, but Rickson was probably already famous in Japan because of how he was dominating masters of other combat sports globally in unsanctioned fights with Brazillian Jiu Jitsu? I'd love to place this historically, but don't have the time to do my own research right now.
