While she did lose, she is the only person currently who can claim that she took on 6 chasers, which is brave.

She gave it a go. How many others could stand there in front of 6 people who does that for a living and in front of an audience and answer questions like that within one minute? Fine, there has been a few do it. I'd struggle answering those with a 20 second head start. Hat's off to her for giving it her best

I'd have either gone £30K for 3 chasers or £100K for 5, depending on how I was feeling. For 4 chasers (versus 3), the small difference in time advantage, plus an extra chaser, isn't worth only £20,000 more in my opinion. At that point you might as well go for 5.

Definitely earned my respect going for that large offer.

Personally I'd have gone for the £100K. Half a mil would be nice but 60 seconds is very tight!

With 29 left on the clock she would have struggled to get one of the lower offers anyway. Such a shame. My heart thumped for her, for sure. I was thinking before the timer started, no matter what happens, I have massive admiration for her choosing that option, and the Chasers and audience obviously respected that as well. This would have been such an incredible win though. Would have loved to see that.

I think it's great she went after all 6! If you're not after the money but just want to have a good time challenging yourself, then why not! I don't think anyone would try taking on all 6 with no time advantage if they wanted to bring home some cash. 😂

I do believe this is the first and only time that a contestant has chosen to take on all 6 chasers. What’s also interesting to note is that there was another contestant who could’ve taken on all 6 but chose to take on 4 and he absolutely slaughtered them. He had about 30 seconds left on his clock so potentially, if he’d have taken on all 6… they might have won an even more incredible amount of money.

I'm pretty sure it isn't the first, and I think that person won, but I may be wrong on them winning. But for me it's more about the time than anything else. Sometimes the chasers get tripped up on BTC because they have to consider each other as opposed to when they're alone and can just say 'pass' if they're unsure. Sometimes people have won not because they played too well, but because of the time running out and the chasers getting a pop culture question none of them knew the answer to and waiting too long to answer. I think she would've won against 4, and maybe even 5

@@qasimhussain1678 hmm fair enough. Have you ever thought about the strategy you would deploy if you were on Beat The Chasers? What’s most important to you, the time, the money or the chasers?

The pressure is already high as is when she chose to face all six of them. The chasers saw this as a challenge as well - took less than 3 seconds to answer the first question, and less than 4 on average for subsequent questions (ones that were answered correctly, anyway.) The pressure on the girl probably multiplied itself by 500000x when she failed to answer the first time, and then another 500000x the second time. When she started shaking her head and smiled to herself she already knew she lost. I believe her train of thought was almost at "Mayflower" when she passed to save time. Still, major balls of titanium to take on six of them, knowing your chance of winning is probably slim to none. I would've taken the 40-second deal (best value, in my opinion).

You wouldn’t beat an average pub quiz team in a 6v1, let alone when you’re against some of the best quizzers in the UK.

They play with an inherent time disad in addtion to having to- 1. Press the buzzer, and wait for the buzzer to call the person 2. Wait to see if anyone knows the answer to the question, if not them, instead of instantly passing These two things can waste a major amount of time, but admittedly in a no-pressure contest, you are right

she went for the gusto, props to her! first 20 seconds she did amazingly but would've needed to keep that pace throughout the whole round and essentially not get 1 wrong if she wanted to win, but I guess thats how it goes when theres 500k on the line, also going first definitely does not help. GG

Also I think once she did get one wrong, she dwelled on it and I think that threw her. I've noticed now, because time is so crucial if the answer doesn't come to you right away, just pass immediately and cut your losses don't waste time thinking, if you do get one wrong, let it go mentally and just focus on the next one don't let it throw you off.

I get the feeling Mark was only told 500,000 through his ear piece or monitor as he said it based on his own reaction.

Also the Chasers need to slip up at least one question, since your clock go first it's very likely that your clock also ends first should both side answer flawlessly.

That's a bad case of mixing ambition with ability, but fair play to her for having the guts to go for the big offer. She should have gone much lower and she would have given herself a great chance of going home with a decent amount. Once she lost her train of thought it was all over.

In short to play for half a million you`d be facing Aristotle - arguably the last man on earth to know practically everything there is to know.

Jess was unlucky though. After that first wrong answer, every question after that was tough

To all who call her greedy, yeah, hindsight is 20/20. I applaud her confidence. Let's see how many would call her greedy had she won. To all that say she should have gone for lower money, well... the chasers used 31 seconds, that's less than the lowest offer. Yes, some chasers wouldn't be able to answer, but it's not clear she would have won with any of those offers.

There are so many "you should've taken the lower offer instead of being greedy" comments that are entirely based on what the end result was, instead of taking the perspective of being there in the moment, before the actual decision is made. When you're there, you never know. Despite being superbrains, the chasers have a history of messing up big time in quite a few instances, and with the right questions at the right time, it's still doable. So while the lower offers may have changed the outcome, you cannot fault her for going for the 500K. Brilliant start if anything.

It’s a very easy mistake to make, she was perhaps a little foolish in accepting the deal. You listen for keywords when you’re a quizzer, and 9/10 times you’ll see that the answer for a question relating to melanin is “skin”.

1v3 then really. 30k to go for 3 with 20 more seconds. Take 20 off the chasers and she is still 9 seconds away. Could of gone for the 30 and probably won because of who the chasers were.

Any contestant without a time advantage is always going to be up against it, because the contestant goes first - so assuming the average length of each question is the same on both sides, if the chasers get all theirs right then you're toast whatever you do. You really need an advantage of about 5 seconds just to counter the disadvantage of having to go first. 47 seconds would counter the disadvantage and then give you about a two question advantage, i.e. even if they get all theirs right you can afford to get two wrong and still win. So I'd probably have gone for the five chaser offer - £100k is still a lot of money but you have a MUCH better chance. Probably only a "professional" quizzer - Kevin Ashman or someone similar - would be able to take them all on with no time advantage and have a reasonable chance of winning.

@@marcpower4167 A human reaction time to an audio stimulus is 0.17 seconds and it takes about 6 seconds for Brad to ask a question, to simplyfy this for you it would take about 18 questions each for the buzzing in to nullify the advantage of the chasers going second and in 60 seconds Brad only asks about 10 questions each

Darragh joined Beat The Chasers in series 3 when Paul was ill. Series 4 was recorded in summer 2021.

All 6 having a full 60 seconds is too much of an advantage for them. Should’ve only been another 3 seconds for 50.

In all game or quiz shows that involves answering questions. It is all about the odds, the right person being there answering the perfect questions that they happen to know answer for. So someone might have got all questions right and gone home with half a million quid. And someone else might have gone home empty handed etc. In theory it is a trap to lure you in with big money offers. But also as well on the on the other hand. U might as well have a go and take up that big money offer as contestants alway say your only here once

Most shows in this format get insured for rare, high paying prizes that are unlikely to be won. It's budgeted in, but they don't need to pay out the full half a million, just the insurance premium for claiming it.
