Beat Narcossis with Trimix Diver: Your First Taste Of Helium!

Beat Narcossis with Trimix Diver: Your First Taste Of Helium! The 4th video in our series on the OC technical diver training progression and we are diving on Helium! It's time for Trimix everone!
We're going to be answering:
What are the prerequisites for Trimix diver training?
What can you expect to learn on your Trimix diver course?
Who is Trimix diver best suited for?
Trimix diving is safe... well, at least safer than diving to the same depth on Nitrox. The addition of Helium means less narcossis and therefore clearer thinking, which means better diving and better decision making. Whether you want to further your diving into caves, or deep wreck diving, the Trimix Diver course is going to give you the knowledge and skills required to make technical dives in the 45-60m/150-200ft range.
As before, I currently teach TDI's program of courses, so the dive standards mentioned in this video are a reflection of TDI. If you are considering an equivalent course from a different scuba diving training agency, it's best to reach out to your Instructor for their course standards.
Thanks for watching!

    I started diving when I was 16. In my early 20s, while in Guam, I reached 136 ft on air and felt fine. I didn't dive for 15 years. Started again in 2020 and have done 200 dives. I'm now 40 yo. This past weekend I reached 104, the deepest in the past 2 years and holy shit, I got hit with narcosis like getting slammed with a half dozen shots of whiskey. I felt nauseous. Went up to 70 and cruised around fine. I'm definitely looking into trimix. Thanks!

    Not sure I’ll be getting into “tech” diving anytime soon due to financial reasons. However, hearing all of this talk makes me want to push myself to be a better diver up to my Rec limits. The average of all of my dives are around 40-60 ft. I’ve had tons of dives at deeper depths, but due to geographical reasons, most of them stay relatively shallow. Thanks for the awesome content James.

    James, great video! I must say, though - I respectfully disagree with your heightened prerequisites for this course. It seems odd to me that trimix, which makes diving at depth demonstrably safer, would be kept behind an artificial skill or experience wall. I understand your reticence to teach this one is drawn more from the depths it opens up, so I wish there were some way to acquire trimix proficiency separately from the increased liability that comes with extending a diver’s range. What are your thoughts?

    Hello James, I have completed my classroom work for TDI advanced Nitrox and Decompression. My checkout dives are at the ends of June. I wasn’t planning on Trimix, but I’m always looking to increase my safety so Trimix is next. But before I go for it, I plan on logging a season of deep dives. Thanks for the great advice!!

    I've only dipped my toes in planned decompression diving so far, but this definitely makes me want to continue on to trimix as well, in due time. Heck, there's some dives I want to do where I'll need to dive hypoxic mixes anyway, for example at some point I want to dive with dogfish, and then we're talking 70-80 meters, similarly hammerheads tend to be around there as well. Been down to 56 on air(1.4 ppO2), planned decompression with nitrox stage tank. I'm also certified on the Poseidon MKVI/Se7en rebreather(CCR). I'd love to combine rebreather with trimix at some point.

    If you have a CCR (and more so if you're already certified on it), then skip the OC trimix and do an ART or MOD 2 (as appropriate)

    James, what are your thoughts on TDI's Extended Range course? Any value in it given that it's based on diving air and not trimix?

    Issue with air is your mdl is short. So what’s the use of going to 40 or 45 when you are there for short time. Helium is better but not cheap. Try out gue

  • @DiversReady

    @DiversReady

    I'm not sure what @Melbin is referring to, but adding Helium does not extend your NDL... Deep Air diving, or Extended Range as it was remarked not that long ago, is madness in a world where Trimix is readily available and so much safer. Controlling Narcossis is essential for enjoyable, safe dives at depth. I am an Extended Range Instructor but I choose not to offer that course.

    Hi james, being a TDI TMX-Diver myself, I always found it to be quite problematic to encourage people to do air dives in the Adv. Nitrox/Deco-Pro range. What is the reason TDI is not putting it all in one course together with Trimix like other agencies do (e.g. GUE)? Back then, I told my Adv.Nitrox/Deco-Pro instructor up front that I'm not going to dive significantly deeper than 30m (100ft?) on air. So we did all the deeper dives during the training on Trimix, which I think was a good idea. Especially when considering all training dives being in cold water (4-6°C) which promotes nitrogen narcosis. BTW, I love watching you videos. Keep up the good work.

    Hi James! Helium is not only expensive, but it also runs out and can't be produced. Doesn't that make you feel like open cirquit trimix diving is very wasteful? Is there an opportunity to learn trimix diving on CCR without having to do it OC before?

  • @DontScareTheFish

    @DontScareTheFish

    Жыл бұрын

    You can do trimix on a CCR without having to do OC first (I have). In one of the earlier video's James said there was no cheap way to do tec, I'd argue that CCR is the cheap way (once you look at the gas bills). Just to set your expectations while CCR trimix is generally cheaper than OC trimix, CCR Nitrox is more expensive (in my experience). A number of agencies will do an ART (Rec Trimix) as the first CCR course.
