I remember the first time I went camping in the woods by myself, I had a very low budget and a strong will, so I shopped at garage sales and pawn shops for a few weeks and within a month, I had the main components I needed. Found a decent 20° sleeping bag for $5, 10x12 hd tarp for $15, AG russel bowie knife for $20, painters tarp for less than $10, memory foam mattress topper that I cut to use as a bed roll/ground pad for $15ish, a military surplus duffle bag with shoulder strap for $15. I had a blast and for the money I saved, I was impressed. Over the years I replaced all that with quality gear which has made camping more comfortable and enjoyable, but it sure can be done for cheap if you kniw how to shop.

That's amazing how you were able to start your camping journey with a low budget and resourcefulness! It's definitely possible to enjoy outdoor adventures without breaking the bank. Speaking of quality gear, have you heard about the Segway Portable PowerStation Cube Series? It's a versatile and durable power station with a massive capacity and fast recharging capabilities. It can be a reliable backup power source for your camping trips or even for home use. Check it out!

@@user-hh6ex9md4w I can't say I have, I have looked into the Jackyl and some others but I haven't pulled the trigger on anything yet, I'm also looking into solar chargers and such too but that's another rabbit hole to dive into lol. Only thing I did do for power wise is get a power converter added to my truck, since it has a 90 amp generator on it, it can power some necessities as needed.

I love your vlogs! When i was going through Chemo I lost about 50% of hearing in both ears, so I could no longer hear rain on the roof. I have always loved standing, walking, playing in the rain. Now, because of your vlogs I can always hear the rain! Thank You!

Over that time your posts and videos have been the steady in my life! You keep with the same moral values that I respect so dearly! Now that I’m free of all my obligations my best friend and I are going to hike threw Ireland! Any one who has ideas on waterproof gear that I can purchase in Ireland would be awesome! Can I just say you have the most photogenic wildlife on your mountain!

I grew up just east of Hendersonville so your videos make me homesick. Love the NC mountains. Married a girl from New Bern so I am stuck in the coastal plain. Used to sit on my grandma’s front porch and enjoy the mountain rains. Your tent and tarps sound somewhat like our tin roof. Good memories great fun.

We live at the edge of town so we see a lot of wildlife. We have deer families passing thru & one that's made a nest in our back yard to sleep in. We always open the front door & they're right there eating the roses. They don't move till you do. Then there's the families of racoons & skunks. Lastly, coyotes pass thru our neighborhood seeking prey. We did have a neighborhood of bunnies and stray cats, but no more. We leave our cat in a lot on account of the coyotes. We actually had less wildlife 30 yrs ago than we do now. They come down from the hills I'm assuming because they've eaten all their food so we have a Facebook community watch that reports when coyotes are present.

Be glad for all of the rain. Here in Texas, it's so hot and dry, no rain forecasted here for the whole month of August! It's oppressive and it's taking a toll on the farmers, livestock, hay fields and everything. But we do what we can and pray for some relief. Enjoyed watching the adventure and as always looking forward to the next one!

We have car camped and slept in my Prius with zippo gear needed. cracked the windows and put paper towels with citronella on them to keep out the skeeters and it worked fine for 2 adults. did 3 weeks in Colorado sleeping in a tent and the car with the weather being iffy. Tent was only at one campsite. The rest was frog strangling weather. Still had fun.

I like camping in really bad weather. Tornadoes always fascinates me. Growed up in Kansas, alot of Tornadoes. Now in Tennessee, we see a few, but not as much. It's very dangerous camping in tornado weather, but I love it. I push things to far sometimes by camping under trees. Wouldn't suggest that to anyone. Way to dangerous. Myself, it's always enjoyable for me personally. I've studied Tornadoes all my life and know what to do if one decides to show up in the area I'm camping. Again, I don't advise anyone to do it unless you really know what your doing. I have fun around Tornadoes, heavy rain, hail, flooding, high winds, etc.... I'm 60. Learned alot about weather over the years. Bad weather makes me feel alive and full of energy. I don't drive, so things can really get interesting in a hurry when a strong storm shows up. I ride my mountain bike with everything I need to survive and have fun. Use to be homeless for about 5yrs. Learned alot about survival during that time, living in the woods. Since that time, I've studied and practiced camping and survival skills each time I go out into a location. Anyway, I say go for it! Go camping, but be prepared and smart about it. Most of all, be safe!!!

One of the things I fell in love with when I started hiking / camping in the Blue Ridge in the 70s was the rain and cooler than ATL. It feels like it's raining ... all over the world. When you're out there with pack only, it can be challenging but you know you're in God's country.

Here is a suggestion for those who are vehicle camping and want to have a fire, you can bring just enough to get the fire started real good. It doesn’t have to be a lot, a couple handfuls of kindling and a few split logs to add once the kindling does its job. Once the fire is going good, then you can take the time to search for more dryish wood in the forest or brush around you. The amount of dry firewood you bring depends on how much room you can spare in the trunk of your vehicle, there is always enough nooks and crannies to tuck a few armloads of split firewood.

I once had to wear a full one-piece rainsuit and sweat was running down my legs within 20 min. As for going camping, Yes that does not have to cost much. But I don't have a car. Living in the Netherlands, biking is fairly common and public transport is fairly good, I prefer to spend money on other luxuries rather than a car. So for me, I used to go camping with a bike, a cheap (second hand) bike trailer for some extra cargo capacity, a cheap tent, and a big tarp. I also sourced some second-hand utilities like a folding camp bed, a fairly light folding garden chair, and some cooking gear. There are plenty of camping sites within 15-30 km (9-19 miles) and if you are willing to bike for 2 or three days (say 4-5 hours per day and an easy 30-50 km/19-31 miles per day) you can get halfway across the country (and yes the Netherlands is a small country, from north to south about 300 km/186 miles and east to west 200 km/124 miles). ps. by biking I mean bicycling and not riding a motorbike. lol

Long time viewer, first time poster. Really enjoy your content. I was wondering why, if you are truck camping anyway, you didn't bring a propane torch to light wet wood. Easy way out some would say but, if weight isn't an issue, why not.🙂

I am just glad to see that One Tigris is actually taking the criticism to heart and using it to try to correct their mistakes. If the awning was wider to deflect rain I would be all in and purchase one of these. It has almost everything I am looking for a small packable tent except a larger awning and would love a stove Jack.

I love camping either car or tent. Most of my camping things came from garage sales and thrift store. Im getting old but i bought camping cots on the market place a couple of years ago for less than half the price of new. Love watching you hike and camp. I dont mind the rain either.

The use of a ridgeline makes for a far faster, and easier tarp deployment, period! Having to guy out support poles in pouring rain is miserable work. Setup the ridgeline first, the throw over the tarp, keeping it off the ground, stake out the corners, then use your poles... if needed.

Luke, Thank you for stating that camping does not have to be an expensive venture. I grew up in WA State in the 70s, and got by on bedding from the house and a Sears tent. We still had an excellent time with our Family. And yes, it rained there too! 😊

Just loving it! I'm here in Maggie Valley for a class reunion, and the temp change from Florida to here is awesome! 30° average cooler here, anyway I came to backpack a few days and kayak some, see family, etc. A silly mistake on my part ruined 90% of that. I left my vehicle, unlocked for about 30minutes and a bear rearranged my interior.

I love to watch your videos it brings back old memories when I was younger doing all the camping, fishing, and Deer hunting. Seeing all the wildlife. At night setting at the campfire raccoons would come up I would throw them food oh how I loved it. The only thing you need is a dog I always had my best friend with me my trusted Collie Lassie.

I do something like your tarp setup but with an actual tarp, wood poles of various lengths, baling twine and gutter spikes with washers to keep the rope tied on. I use pool noodles cutdown with my jig saw and a single splice down the middle. It allows me to put them on the tarp string so you don’t accidentally trip over it. The poles have a screw on one end that you can hook the tarp grommets over. I’ve used 20’ x 16’ tarps and once at the beach, my ex helped me set up the tarp down the side of the converted horse trailer and an additional tarp at the back of the trailer. I then used carabiners to connect the two tarps. It was a stormy weekend and I had a lot of company under those two tarps. We had moved the fire ring to the edge of the tarp so it was cozy. It was the first weekend out with my new solar panel on top and with the rain I had to use my generator a lot. I put tarps over the stalls for the horses utilizing shorter tarp poles, duct tape and baling twine. Lol. I have camped in the back of my truck using a double mattress from home and later a taller cot then you have here. I have a smallish porta poti that came with a nice cover. I used it as a night stand and a place for Mr Heater to warm it up quickly in the morning. I put a rug on the floor of the truck bed and taped “curtains “ to the windows. It made getting dressed difficult with limited headroom so now the cot is in the front bedroom in my horse trailer. The cot is tall enough to store bins underneath and I have a dresser in the nose of my bumper pull bedroom.

Hey Luke, been watching your channel for a while now and it’s one of my favourite subscriptions, thanks for the quality content mate. Just a question, you camp in the rain and mud quite a lot, so how do you keep your gear, tents, tarps etc clean? Do you have a cleaning and storage process to keep stuff in good condition? Thanks again and all the best to you and your family 👍🏼

Hi Luke, greetings from Sydney, Australia. Your vids get me back to thinking on my own camping trips in the past, and longing for the day when I might have the time and opportunity to get back into it. I always have a laugh at the old seasoned kettle you use to brew your coffee almost each camping trip. Glad to see someone like me who treasures their old trusty camping items and it might be a topic for you to ask people what's their favourite camping item that they use over and over. While I do like the old gear I'm always open to any new gadgets that make camping life easier. Happy trails!
