That is my father Jimmy Peterson on piano, (and my mother Mable leaning on the piano keeping dem gurls in check) with the first words in the movie. The normal gig was the piano player and arranger for Louis Jordan and His Timpany Five, as well as his own group, The Jimmy Peterson Trio. Spenser Williams speaks for himself. ❤️🖤💚😎🤘🏾

Thanks for posting! That's my mama Joyce Mc Elrath, singing, "Beale Street Mama." She had a lovely career after this, notably a long engagement years later at Don Robey's famous Texas supper club. That's where Billy Strayhorn heard her on stage and personally escorted her to an on-the-spot audition for Duke Ellington. He was impressed, too and wanted to work with her. But she was afraid to break Robey's contract. So, Ellington asked her to reconnect when it expired. Never happened. Told me that she was tired of life on the road. Went home, got married, and settled down. That's fate! Thanks again.

Wonder why⁉️ Just born that way or made that way . Speak for yourself. Not me. Raised differently deliberately away from this kind of culture, which by the way isn’t that particulately Black. You find it wherever you find poverty. What IS distinctively Black is the love of music and dance, good times: relief from the deprivation forced on us by forces greater than us. Not all that different today. The similarity to women today ( and men) is the similarity to conditions today. When concrete conditions change, people change. And who changes the conditions? People. Just saying. Keep it in perspective. “Fa sho” - we can be funny.

I watched this one for the music. Don Albert was a territory band out of San Antonio that recorded some good ones in the thirties. Interesting to see his band in a mid-40s movie. Like most territory bands, they are little rough but swing hard. Sorry, but I fast forwarded through most of the alleged acting and alleged plot.
