I used the techniques described in your training video...the rabbit foot and dragging the bunny in a cage and letting my pup scent it. So far he is trailing really well and he is opening up when sight chasing a rabbit. He has also opened up several times on a wild rabbit scent line at the beagle club. Off to a great start for four months old. Thanks for the tips! Great video.

Great to hear! Sounds like you have a great puppy. The next step is to keep putting him on wild rabbit scent. I like to actually see the rabbit then drop the dog right on the track, just so I know it is a rabbit. If you are at a club, try to let your puppy get as much solo time as he can. You don't want him always behind a bunch of other dogs.

Me too bro:I myself hunt rabbits first of all completely alone,a-secondly I am using several different guns for rabbit hunting depending on situation, place and my own mood and every single one of these guns are handguns all of which are chambered in 2 calibers:the first is 4.5mm BB pistols-obviously none of them is under 480 fps and so are proven hundreds of times by me to be already powerful enough for the job.But most importantly these are the most quiet, unregulated, cheap and comfortable guns that are good option for the rabbit hunting gun that is reasonably effective in this role from at least 50 feet and sometimes I managed to do so just as good from over 100 feet and even more! Yet as the other option I also quite oftenly just feel like it and pull out my EDC to just apply it's formidable accuracy, range and power in terms of which my EDC is actually vastly superior to any kind of modern 9mm or .45acp handguns which have slightly shorter barrels than my EDC's 6 inches barrel in my case..And I am talking about a really unusual, ridiculously old and rare gun-Forehand&Wadsworth "Terror" in .32rf long which is my favorite among all pistol calibers..Anyway I always get this dinosaur of a firearm to show a very decent velocity rates like for example with 93 grain LRN hardcast measured at an average of 1480 fps so it's muzzle energy is 450 fpe!So it's obviously more than enough of force to hunt even big game with it unless it exceeds 600 lbs and even when it does-there is anyway a lot of opportunities to still drop the beast in it's tracks using this same gun to hit the vulnerable area..Although the unfortunate thing is that it's so much of an overkill when it comes to rabbit hunting that it turned out to be able to literally almost tear them in two separate parts when hitting the center of mass so it is obvious that the only way to avoid losing all the meat in this case is with headshots only..

That's my plan. He's barked a few scent lines where I've seen rabbits cross, but he doesn't take them very far yet. I take him to the club twice a week for a few hours each time and do yard training every day with the San Juan rabbits. Hoping he will run some for me this winter

My love for beagles has recently been revived and now coming across your videos seeing the comments of the people more concerned with the rabbits well being honestly is disturbing. People that don't have an ounce of self survival all obviously are pure consumers and don't appreciate the art of hunting for your food. They're the reason fast food exist.

I may be biased, but I would get a beagle. Beagles will hunt at your speed, but will chase the rabbit faster. Wherever your dog finds the rabbit, it usually comes back to that spot in a few minutes, so it doesn't matter if your dog is a little ahead. Bassets also are more to feed and have more health problems.

I have a question for you. I have a Basset mixed with with staffi. He's a year old and a born hunter. I just went rabbit hunting for my first time this year with traps. I haven't trained him to hunt because I was only hunting deer up till September. Now if I say "go get it" he gets riled up and ready to chase his toys. Do you think if I brought him on my next hunt and showed him a rabbit and said "go get it" he'd think of it as a game of fetch and get the rabbit?

  • @michaelbrennan2921

I think if you showed him a rabbit or rabbit fur consistently he would definitely start hunting rabbits. If you take him out and you show him rabbit scent and he gets excited, that's great and he probably can be trained.

We are getting ready to move out in the country (Thank GOD!!) and I am wanting a Rabbit Dog. I'm not sure if I should get the Beagle or the Basset. I was thinking the basset because it has shorter legs and while hunting I can keep up with it, instead of the beagle charging waaay ahead and the rabbit be gone by then. what should I get?

Love the vid! I have a 3 year old beagle and he has a great drive but I never really trained him to hunt when he was a pup. I take him to my in laws to hunt cottontail from time to time ans while he seems to be good at tracking a sent down, a lot of times he seems to walk right passed a rabbit and it'll run without him noticing and he won't chase. How can I hone his skills to make him a better hunting parter? I dont believe his age means he can't still learn and I have the patience to help him but not sure what to do for him since I skipped training him when he was a pup.

I would do all the same things with him that I would do for a puppy. You may be able to skip a few steps. Maybe, have him sight chase a few to keep his interest. We trained our dog Willie this way when he was older. You have to make rabbit hunting an exciting game for your dog.

I have a 1 1/2 y/o beagle that has some experience with scent trails...I used todrag a coon pelt around in my woods and he would find it every time.. I also let him chase squirrels..is it too late to turn him on to rabbits...2. how do you catch the rabbits...do you use a haveaheart trap?...3. how do you call the dogs off a rabbit or animal? my dog chased a deer for about a half mile before it got tired out...4. what stage should I start him at? he is great at following trails. the help is greatly appreciated!

  • @BeagleBoysRabbitHunting

    @BeagleBoysRabbitHunting

    9 жыл бұрын

No problem. I would start him on rabbits by finding rabbits somewhere and placing right on the track. I only say this because you want to make sure your dog is running a rabbit, not something else. So it may not be too late to train him on rabbits. Our dog Jack chases multiple animals. I catch the rabbits with a haveaheart and apples. It is also important to naturally funnel them into the trap and make sure your trap is nice and dark by placing something over it. For your deer problem we use shock collars. I can sometimes call my dogs off a rabbit, but I don't like to. They are just doing what they are made for.

The dogs only chase the rabbit, which runs around in circles. When we see the rabbit run by, we shoot it. Rabbits usually stay in the a general area and do not leave, even when chased. On rare occasion the dogs will catch a rabbit themselves.

Scott Shepherd Ya, I have consider the same problem. Yes, bringing them to a pen is a great idea. I sometimes just show my puppies rabbits that happen to be in my yard. You could also tie your skin/foot to a string attached to a stick and drag it away from you. Or someone suggested to me casting a rabbit foot out in a field with a fishing pole and reeling it in. The same thing but quite in a different way is what I will eventually have to do with quite a different animal..As well as my grandfather I don't want a hunting dog-I want a hunting cat!Large, orange and striped cat that is!The most funny thing that he had to do was actually showing his tiger cub Neron how he has to deal with his quarry:literally had to dispatch rabbits with his jaws!Yet after 18 months Neron became the really unprecedentedly efficient hunter-with his speed and power unmatched by anything in the area he just wrecked the local wildlife together with his owner!

Cosmo Kramer How old is your beagle? Is he coming back immediately after he loses it or is he staying out their and looking around? Probably the best thing to do is keep practicing by himself.

Wild cottontails are the best!Surprisingly but any domestic rabbit has vastly larger chance to bite or attack..So where wild ones just are retreating the same time-the domestic may be not!

  • @BeagleBoysRabbitHunting

Just put an apple in a live trap and place the trap on a runway. Push brush up on the sides of the runway, so that it funnels them to the trap.

Thanks,a lot I actually have it set out along the treeline baited with apple chunks right now between 2 bushes in my woods and I didn't catch any lastnight but there were tracks all around it and they ate the piece of apple i put in front of the trap so another day they should get use to it and go in

  • @BeagleBoysRabbitHunting

OH Outdoorsman In that case I would cover the trap with leaves and branches, so that it looks like a tunnel. The darker the better. Also cover the bottom of your trap with leaves so they don't feel the wire.

If you want to hunt with a dog I would choose a beagle. But if you want a dog to catch the rabbits by themselves to keep rabbits out of a garden, I would choose a terrier.

Meat dogs ! I only let a pup sight chasing a rabbit 1 time ... after that it all nose ! Find their own... I do believe sight chasing too much promotes a beagle just to “run” a rabbit down instead of “trailing” the rabbit .... hey , to each thier own... everyone has a different method ... I belong to beagle club as well , mostly I only use club to train pups ... older dogs that keep running in beagle club grounds learn where paths are mowed down ... clear indication they are looking to sight chase and skirt the lines instead of using their nose and trail trail the rabbit like they are bred to do ... I've noticed this bad trait in some AKC SPO dogs that are at trials sometimes they look for rabbit first on paths chase it like hell ! Never open up much until later ... skirt the lines a lot ... tells me a beagle been ran in fences way too much ! Only blame is owner who trains the dog ... of course they are proud thier dog can run super fast and catch a rabbit ... to everyone else in sport it’s an eye sore !
