Lovely loco. It still amazes me even after 65 years of interest in steam traims that that kettle on wheels can, through those little cylinders, produce enough power to pull 100's of tons of train.

This year should be called “The New Build Year” as we have already seen GWR 6880 enter service, the LNER P2’s tender frames, Ffestiniog railway “James Spooner” and now this.

@@22pcirish The Ivatt Atlantics did not have the undulating running plate that was, in my opinion, such a fussy feature of the Brighton H1s. Save for where it rose next to the coupled wheels and a break above the cylinders, where there was a separate unconnected plate, it was a straight line from buffer beam to cab. I am, of course, referring to the standard (LNER) C1 and C2 classes and not the one-offs found in both classes.

@@williamarmstrong646 Correct, Marsh complicated it for his version (H1) but Billinton tidied it up for the H2. And is better for it. It was Marsh’s idea for the big boiler inspired by his time at Swindon. He obviously persuaded Ivatt to try a big boiler in the C1, to great success. That’s why Ivatt let him have the plans, the GN Atlantics were virtually a Marsh design in the first place!

So far as UK standard gauge goes, I do believe you're right. GNR No.251 has run in living memory, but seems unlikely to do so again. Not sure when GNR 990 last ran. Tank locos LT&SCR No.80 and B&CDR No.30 (5'-3" gauge) are both stuffed and mounted and likely to stay that way. Can't think of any other preserved examples offhand. Newbuild Saint, 2999 'Lady of Legend' was designed to be configurable as a 4-4-2 (IIRC with a set of 'Churchward' nameplates) but I've certainly not seen any photos of it in that guise and to the best of my knowledge, it hasn't put in any public appearances configured thus. Next in the 'Atlantic House' will be the B4 and (drum roll please) the sole surviving Adams 0415 4-4-2T, No.488/30583. 0:02

I cannot afford the price of railway magazines nowadays and I had no idea she had been completed. So much of Ivatt's GN in the Marsh Atlantics and they lasted well into BR days, unlike the GN ones that were scurried away out of sight when withdrawn and even after the run of The Plant Centenarian.

  • @bluebellsalmon

It's how many people in the Atlantic group remember it. In that form it was: * The very last Atlantic running in BR service. * Was used on many railtours in the late 1950s, including over the Bluebell line. * It was this loco's scrapping in 1958 which led Brighton enthusiasts to realise that something must be done to save something of the history of the LB&SCR before it was too late, and led to the first meeting of what became the Bluebell Railway Preservation Society in 1959. So it is significant in the Bluebell's own history. * Since the project plan to reconstruct this locomotive was announced 23 years ago, all the fundraising has been on the basis that it would be in this livery. Undoubtedly it will carry other liveries in subsequent boiler certificates.

I regularly slung some cash in that chimney which stood in front of that unpromising big lump of boiler, round behind the engine sheds at SP. TBH, I seriously didn't expect much to happen, but as any cash would've been used on the Bluebell anyway, that never once bothered me. Then they got started ..... and witness the magnificent result. What an absolute stunner!!! Such a shame lack of drawings (among other things) means it'll never now be joined by a Billinton K class mogul. Truly 'the one that got away'. Ho-hum .... can't win 'em all.

Don't forget, like many Brighton locos, the H2s needed 'trimming' to fit the SR composite loading gauge. Practical upshot... you'd need to fiddle with the cab, steam dome and chimney to present it in Brighton umber .... well, that and either borrow some LBSC stock from the IWSR (and they need it to run trains), or whistle up some Panter era 'balloon' stock, of which none survives (and I reckon C&W at HK have got enough to keep 'em occupied without some random gricer suggesting new build carriages!!).

@@TheSudrianTerrier653 Utilitarian?! I can't agree that any of the younger Billinton's engines merits that description; even the E2s had running plates that weren't straight. The Rev. W. Awdry liked them, albeit with a modified running plate... What a great shame that a K wasn't saved, although I believe that one nearly was, the Bluebell turning it down.

@@williamarmstrong646 At the time the Bluebell had no money - the rolling stock appeal hadn't raised enough for 'Birch Grove', and someone who'd offered to put in a large amount of cash towards the purchase of 'Fenchurch' had gone AWOL, so given that the K was, in practical terms, a very large engine (and hence more expensive to buy too), it was simply out of reach. So yes, it was a great shame our forebears didn't donate the money to buy it!
