Beach Stones: Quartz (Tutorial)

Quartz, my fave beach stone. One of the most common minerals in the world, quartz stones are much-loved by=beachcombers partly because of their beauty but also because they seem to carry within them, a soothing, almost a spiritual quality.

I agree about quartz. I go beach combing a lot near my home in Cumbria North West England along the Solway Firth coast. I pick stones and glass for making jewellery. I definitely see quartz the most, soothing yellow amber type colours. So beautiful and calming and smooth. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I never knew about the Sun block trick! Great tip!

Thank you for this video! I live on Long Island and recently began combing beaches (mainly in the Peconic region and south shore) for stones. It's been very confusing because, as you pointed out in this video, the rocks you find out here are very large and so rounded out by the water I've been confused as to what I've been finding!

Mineral oil (like baby oil) will work on the stones without the zinc oxide that gums up the holes.

  • @dr.beachcomb4221

Tons of stones we find on beaches are quartz - carnelian, jasper, adventurine...(google ‘stones that are quartz’ - you’ll be amazed) - and yes, the black stones you find could be quartz-based - maybe heliotrope or rutile.
