    After Bea already said she had ‘that voice’ as a child, he asks if it’s a smokers voice. It could have been a question from Rose. And Dorothy would have answered: “Yes, I smoked like a chimney when I was 4.”

    Bea Arthur was so gracious to these two undeserving interviewers. Clearly they have not done their research on Bea Arthur as they didn't even know about her Maude hit sitcom series. Granted that it probably did not air in their county but still a little homework would have went a long way in this interview. Bless Bea's heart she was still so gracious to them. Maude was shown in the UK in the seventies which was the first time I saw Bea Arthur and became an instant fan. I also remember the sketch the Golden Girls cast did on the Royal Variety Performance show in front of the royal family, so she was gracious indeed when the interviewers didn't seem to be well researched. Sadly, the male interviewer has a reputation for not listening to the responses and asking and or making inappropriate questions/comments

    Did you know all that stuff back in 1995? It's easy to criticise in modern times when we all have Wikipedia and access to gigabytes of data collated about Bea Arthur over decades, also you really expect Richard and Judy to know who has performed at every single Royal Variety performance?

  • @joshsnyder4119

    @@uberdude2555 No I would not expect Richard and Judy to know who has performed at every single Royal Variety performance. I would expect them to know about Beas performance, you know since she is the one being interviewed. Even in 1995 reporters knew how to do research. This was a distasteful interview.

  • @uberdude2555

    @uberdude2555

    @@joshsnyder4119 The fact is Bea Arther was widely known in the UK exclusively for her role in The Golden Girls, Maud was not broadcast in the UK when it first aired, and even reruns that were broadcast decades later never appeared on any of the main terrestrial TV channels. Yes Richard and Judy could have used researchers to make them appear more knowledgeable about Beas performances than they were, however I see nothing wrong with reflecting what 99.99% of the audience watching knew about Bea and building upon that by unscripted questioning. I understand Bea enjoyed spending time in the UK and was a fan of Richard and Judy so she must have been comfortable with their interview style. I therefore doubt Bea was offended, it's only the Captain Hindsight Google nerds of 2021 that get perpetually offended by everything.

If someone has a different opinion they get the 3rd degree. Unfortunately that is due to the dumb downed society we live in now. I'm glad you feel they did a great job interviewing her. I respect your opinion. In my opinion it was a distasteful interview. Fortunately there are others far superior to this one.

I'm not a fan of British humour much, it's more about mundane situations or silly like Monty Python or bawdy like Benny Hill. Too many stereotypes and modern British humour is depressing.

    I don’t think asking if someone smokes or not is wrong. Good journalism, I wanted to ask the same questions. She probably did smoke but didn’t want to say. Smoking isn’t viewed kindly in the USA and she might’ve gotten a backlash from it. I wanted to know why she always wore a scarf or a turtleneck on Maude. She NEVER wanted to show her neck.

    watching many interviews with Bea Arthur I noticed most ask really rude questions to her not realizing she had a very lengthy career prior to the Golden Girls. The dumb question "is that a smokers voice?" maybe referring to Lucille Ball who had a really deep voice in her later sitcoms or other older actresses like Bea who did smoke.

    Bea Arthur was smart enough to call time on "The Golden Girls" after seven successful years. She realized that had the show continued any longer, it would have been repeating itself and not bringing anything fresh and new which is what happens to all long running shows that have been on the air after a certain period of time. The creativity factor begins to wane and the scripts are not as fresh and sharp as they once were.
