Be Still My Soul - Mount Royal Kantorei
"Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past, all safe and blessed we shall meet at last."
The music for ‘Be Still My Soul’ is a hymn-like section from the patriotic symphonic poem Finlandia written in 1899 by Finnish Composer Jean Sibelius.
Katharina Von Schlege (1697 - 1768) * wrote the original German lyrics “Stille meine Wille, dein Jesus hilft siegen“ in 1752 and the hymn was subsequently translated into English by Jane Laurie Brothwick (1813 - 1897) in 1855.
The tenors and basses of Mount Royal Kantorei began work on this inspiring arrangement by Calgarian Oliver Munar, during the COVID-19 pandemic. We love championing the local talent we have here in Calgary. Oliver is a member of Calgary’s professional Juno nominated choir, Luminous Voices.
The comforting lyrics of this hymn speak of faith and hope. Even when confronted with pain and suffering, we can persevere.
This arrangement was recorded at OCL Recording Studios in the spring of 2021. On September 27th, 2021 our singers gathered at Elbow Falls, Alberta and created a beautiful music video with the talented team from Media Pop Films.

This is Finlandia! Written by Finnish Composer Jean Sibelius to Finnish People to Give them Gourage to stand against Russias many attempts to take over Our Country and Destroy its Culture and very rich Language! Finlandia is written in the DNA of every Finnish Person! Finlandia has no religious basis at all!

Composer Jean Sibelius of Finland was a genius. Look for his Carelia suite , amazing music.
My Mama loved this..I had it sung at her funeral..I know she walks with her Savior, Master and Redeemer now..❤

Wonderful rendition of this beautiful hymn If we have put our in Jesus’ we we can find peace, rest and joy, even when our circumstances are challenging, we can run tomJesus and find rest and peace, Be still; my soul.

This rendition is simply beyond words. I listen to the closing stanza where the basses are anchored on just the one deep note, a note of solid foundation and constitution. This, while the rest of the choir twists in soft notes of discord, changing and hunting for connection all to resolve in the end in such peaceful - and simply perfect - harmony. I listen... and then I think of it as God's voice as the bass line, fully anchored, fully one. And there I am, twisting in dissonance and discord in my life but I am tethered. I cannot get away. Finally, in the end I acquiesce into perfect harmony with God with the lyrics simply being, "The Lord is on my side." The sense of rest and protection are simply indescribable. Indeed, Sibelius wrote a powerful masterpiece here. This image is so rich and full within my soul. I wish there was someway that I could convey the wholeness, the completeness I feel when I listen to this closing stanza. God will never forsake me, He never leave me. Nor will He leave you. You may twist in the wind a bit, but it's of your own choosing really. God is anchored, waiting for you to return to him and complete the harmony with His Love. Peace to you all.
