Be careful swimming in Florida's natural springs!!!😨😱

Despite the crystal clear water and plenty of friendly manatees around, Florida's natural springs is also home to alligators!! So be very careful while going for a swim.

During the day they are mostly sunning themselves on the river banks. They do like to chill out at the bottom of lakes when boating traffic picks up. It's night time that you really need to stay out of the water in Florida. Salt or fresh that's when the predators come out to play. You can go to a lake in the day time and see a couple gators. Go to that same lake at night and shine a spotlight on it. You'll see hundreds of red eyes staring at you on the surface.

I remember diving in one spring while family swam and snorkeled…. Watched an otter swim quickly from the river side, headed straight for the fam darting around between them… followed by a big gator. The gator eyed them and went and waited in some vegetation while I surfaced and called out to the family (who was super excited to see an otter so close, lol) to swim away from the reeds and closer to other people. Had kids in that group and didn’t need to see what happens when a gator mistakes a child for an otter.

Alligators are more of a scavenger of small fish & animals. Your dog or cat might go missing, but unless you mess with their babies, nest, harass them or girlfriend when they are working during mating season… you really have no problem just being in same vicinity. Otherwise, people in FL & Louisiana wouldn’t be able to venture outside. 😂

A Gator expert explained that case. It was around mating season and the smaller Gators bury themselves to avoid conflict. so when the Lil boy stepped on him, the Gator thought it was another Gator and went on attack.Thats why he was found fully intact. it wasn't an attack to kill. it was defensive.

Alligatirs usually wont attack unless provoked or if you show weakness such as by splashing around them then they will consider you prey so use common sense and if you see one give it space and only swim in designated closed off areas but still be vigilant of whats under and around you.

That's not entirely true. If they see something that looks like prey, they will go after it. I have tons of gators in my neighborhood, they run away when people get too close to them, but I've seen one that was trying to go after a dog. The whole splashing thing is more with sharks. They are attracted to noise. I'd rather dive with sharks (and I have) than seeing a gator in the water with me.
