    I belive it's meant to be mounted with the mechanism towards the back, in order to not use the space for some other gear you might have in you rig, like a sequential or a handbrake, it's a well thought design.

    As soon as I heard about this shifter I knew it was the one for me. The competition is just a little too expensive to justify, where as the BDH falls in my budget for the quality and value. Im one the waiting list and will patiently wait for Dave to work his magic

    Great review. I really like that you raised the issue of cost vs. pricing in sim gear. Perhaps the CSL DD and AliExpress H shifter are a sign of more reasonable pricing to come. I wouldn't be surprised to find that the CSL DD is cheaper to make than a belt-driven wheel (after all, it's actually mechanically simpler) especially given Fanatec's apparent control of their supply chain as evidenced by the fact they designed the motor rather than use an industrial motor. I'd also love to see someone address the question of rig engineering -- my feeling is that some rigs are actually over-engineered and designed without any real thought about the actual stresses and direction of forces; this could be another area prices could come down.

    I have one of the Sim Hound smaller profile cockpits on it's way soon and that is about £300 I think so we'll see how something smaller but well designed works compared to my larger profile rig... manufacturers will often provide way over the top options just because there's always someone out there with a big enough wallet to buy it! lol

    no it is not, it is and it has been ridiculous, there is no direct connection with the clutch, neither hardware nor software blockage, hence ridiculous, you can shift in the most async way with the clutch, no hardware blockage. Time to update your conscience to the Bash pro shifter with active feedback

    Good review Karl. I was one of the very lucky early owners of a BDH shifter, I've had one here from the start. I've built up a friendship with the team at BDH in a way I haven't with any other supplier of sim hardware. This is top notch British engineering as you correctly pointed out. It's more than simply just a great shifter, it's a thoroughly lovely piece of equipment to own and an absolute credit to the prowess of these engineers.

    I feel like some customers and reviewers unfairly expect small businesses to offer the prices similar to the mass produced brands like Fanatec, without understanding that all the R&D costs for a smaller company have to be factored in to their RRP. Even Fanatec is a niche product. These independent, high end sim businesses are offering a niche within a niche.

    That is practically mechanical pron, and I'm feeling that there is a chance that having both that shifter and my girl in the same room could end badly [for my girlfriend] Seriously though, that is beautiful, and the machinists should be bloody proud of their creation. When I first saw it, I immediately thought MX5, although I'd set up mine with a dogleg first for that old Datsun Rally car feeling. I'm hoping that you'll be able to show off more mechanical art in the future, but meter it out slowly because I have concerns that my bank is going to go the hard NOPE sooner than I'd like. 10/10 for presentation and ingenuity. Fanatec, I hope you are paying attention, it's time to pull your collective fingers out, if the Podium 'kit' is in the works THIS is your competition! Top show, Karl. Well done mate. 👍🙃

    Looks interesting. I’m quite intrigued as to how it works and what’s going on inside all that metal (linkages, hall effect sensor, switches?) Also would be handy to see (or listen) to it in action balanced against the other rig input noises, perhaps over a few different tension settings - it’s hard to tell in isolation, but it seems pretty loud in your clip. Still, nice to see a bit of innovation and good build quality. I hope it does well.

  • @KarlGosling

    @KarlGosling

    I'm not allowed to show whats inside, BDH want the design kept to themselves. But yes it is pretty loud high tension similar to that of a gearbox in a stripped out race car, you don't hear it over the engine/game sounds though. They are all sold out ahead of time and have been since launch last year so doing really well! :)

    I'm really glad to see someone calling out the manufacturers of some high end pedals for how inflated their prices are. This looks like a great piece of kit - sadly way beyond what I'd be able to spend on a shifter, but it's good to know that the money is going on genuine engineer time and not just into the pocket of someone who has assembled some off the shelf pieces.

    It's something that really gets to me, specially as I install those products (hydraulic pedal boxes from the likes of Wilwood, Tilton, Girling etc) to cars in real life and they cost a fifth of the price in some cases! what you're talking about with 1st and reverse being in line with each other is what's called a "dogleg 1st" and isn't entirely unheard of. some sports cars use it, and most manual semi-trucks do as well. where it's a 5 speed H pattern but with 1st under reverse, then when you flip over to high range some will go back through the 1st gear position again for a 10 speed, or just 2-5 again for a 9.

I like it for the same reason I like my HPP pedals - both are expensive pieces of kit but my HPPs are very well machined out of aluminum and are a true custom design from the US of A, and this shifter seems to share that trait (though it's from the UK ofc).

  • @bazookabill9232

    @bazookabill9232

    3 жыл бұрын

    You have to remember this is a piece of sim racing equipment. To make it as realistic as possible you have to overcome some obstacles. You can't just take a gearbox and plug a cable in to make it work for sim racing. Unfortunately you're always going to have one or two things that aren't 100% realistic but the feel of the gear change I.E from 1st to 2nd through neutral and so on .... that's where the realistic feel is. Its the clunking, force and resistance that gives it the feel. To achieve this, there has to be a bit of clicking and resistance to come back to neutral. (At least with how this has been developed) This feel was based on and aimed to feel like a mk2 escort quaife dog box, granted there are bits that maybe need to be finessed and looked at but BDH are always open to suggestions and will always try to help the customer as much as they possibly can.

    Can someone tell me which sims and which cars still use an H pattern?? I love to buy one but it seems like a dying breed. smh.

    Most sims will have cars that are H pattern, but I like it for Rally, more involved and fun even if it is slower and not always a reflection of the car you are in.

    It equals Abit over $1500 AUD yes for a piece of computer equipment it's expensive.. however for how it's made, I can't help thinking this poor guys are ripping themselves off. If it takes 2 weeks to make and only $1500, then take out product cost. It equals less than minimum wage (Australia anyway) they are practically giving it away!!!!

    Dave at BDH literally said "we're making fuck all on them" so yeah exactly that mate. It works out about £40 p/h which is a good wage in the UK, minimum wage is £8.65 or something like that.

    If someone takes 2 weeks to do that, it's a slow milling lathe / machine dang, It makes too much noise for being inside the house, and it clicks like an old lock lol; sry mate

    I don't think it's fair for you to say without knowing whats inside, this isn't just an H plate with springs and ball bearings like a Fanatec shifter etc. it's closer to a hand made gearbox. Yeah if you want a quiet shifter then yes this is not for you!

    NO NEED TO SHOUT!!! The footage got corrupt during file transfer (power cut) and I had already removed and packed the shifter up to send it back.
