They got rid of them because the critics described them as an appropriate choice for a corporation which they viewed as being 'slow, distant and full of hot air'.

Thank you so much for these-the BBC ONE balloon was way by far, in my view, the best idents the channel have or had have. Each one was a classic showing areas across Britain. It was a shame they were ditched in March 2002 for the 'dancers' that replaced them! Well done anyway!

To me, this feels like we were in the pre-modern era of BBC.

I wonder what synths were used for the music. It's very theatrical.

9:40 could potentially be the opening to an episode of The Weakest Link, with the line "Now on BBC1, something, or someONE, is gonna have to go."

The recording is from 1998, so a bit early for The Weakest Link. Judging from the clips before and after, I think it's from 10/11/98, so likely to have been introducing an episode of EastEnders. genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/schedules/bbcone/london/1998-11-10

@@desandmick don't suppose you have the 12th April 1998 introducing E.T The Extra-Terrestrial? It was on at 14:20 by the way.

After 21 years, the balloon will return in Bristol.

These idents and the idents bbc two had during this time would actually still work very well today, if they just refilm these ones it would still fly today

8:17 BBC1 Did Air A Censored 11 Cartoon called "The Isle of Pingo Pongo" (1938) Even Though The Cartoon Banned From Around The World By United Arts, The BBC Had a Chance to Air The Cartoon on TV.

I believe these idents were recorded on VHS? Also, they should bring these idents back, like what BBC Two did to the 90's 2s on their 50th anniversary.

This was the best BBC1 ident ever and to think these are over 20 years old now. Subsequent idents like the 'dancers on the roof', the 'swimming rhino's', 'oneness' and the current 'lense' have been poor in comparison. The only one that comes close is the 'computer globe' from 85-91.

I was born in 1997 so I don't remember this as I was only a kid

I remember going into the reception of BBC TV Centre with these idents on a loop with the music off!

It's a couple of years too early for that, this one appears to be a repeat airing of Three Men and a Mangle, on 5 Oct 1997.

Across this video and the other one covering 2001-2002 kzread.info/dash/bejne/eGScj85wp9yqYpc.html I think I've uploaded just about all of the balloon idents I have recorded. There is only one regular balloon ident which isn't included in either compilation, which I only ever saw once, and never managed to record.
