BBC Six'o'clock News, 27 July 1998
The first ten or so minutes of the Six'o'clock News on Monday 27 July 1998, presented by John Humphrys and Moira Stuart. Stories:
1) Tony Blair has reshuffled his cabinet, sacking Harriet Harman and bringing in Peter Mandelson. John Sergeant reports on the comings and goings.
2) A Consolidated Catalina on a demonstration flight in Southampton has crashed, with two people missing. (The two were subsequently confirmed to have been killed; one was Mayor of Southampton, Mike Andrews.) Stuart Norval reports.
3) The government has decided not to try to equalise the age of consent in this Parliament, after the House of Lords rejected an amendment in its Crime and Disorder Bill. Christine Stewart explains.
4) Foreign Office Ministers were not to blame for the export of weapons to Sierra Leone in breach of a UN arms embargo; though some officials did know. The reporter is James Robbins.

I'm obsessed with these 1998 videos. Last time I felt "good/excited" about being alive before severe depression, borderline personality disorder, alcohol and behavioural problems overtook my life. Things are so bad now that I cant describe it

Hey bro, I'm also obsessed with 1998 xD Also feel the same way, weird
0:12 - For some reason, the presenters are already lit up when they move into frame (they're normally in the dark at this point in the intro), then the overhead lights suddenly switch off, then they're back on a sec later. A tiny but amusing blooper by the technicians 😂 Also, we have the rare sight of John Humphrys presenting the 6 o'clock news.
This is brilliant I love these old BBC News bulletins
Thanks so much for uploading this to KZread
Well this lasted the best part of 5 months since Madelson resigned just before Christmas 98.

Just after xmas as I recall - 28th Dec he was still protesting in an interview "I've done nothing wrong"
9:15 the late Robert Cook 1946 - 2005 VIP, he was only 59.
Your announcer is the late Andy Cartleidige
Which year did John and Moira started doing the 6 together
Blimey, the world really was better when I was a kid...
I believe that Martyn Lewis was on his holidays that week and for the following three weeks until the 17th August 1998
Humphrys looks pretty old here but he's still going strong today.

Is it me or at 0:50 does it look like John is not sitting correctly in his seat or he has moved his chair, as the background position looks slightly different to when all other newsreaders appeared in the virtual set. It looks like he moved his seat a tad too far to our left, his right. Am I wrong?

Hey How often did John and Moira did the 6
Moira Stuart was great
0:11 - Mr Lighting Director made a cock up here. Things seem not to be running smoothly in studio today.

Didn't notice that. The bigger cock up was the camera being slightly too far to the right so John humphreys didn't appear in the correct position, and then another cock up by not waiting for a couple of seconds until the camera was off him to adjust it!

Britain Broadcating Cockup no less
3:38 - Not unexpected at all, the reason the House of Lords leader Lord Richard was removed and replaced with Baroness Jay was due to his total lack of interest in removing the hereditary peers from the upper house fast enough for Blair.
Did they have the still to come sting that night
Intro was rushed by Humph. It might have worked for the Today programme on Radio 4. Not for this high profile Nine O’Clock News.

Looked the same after a few fast forwards and back, of course the camera may have changed position.

Magical days with the good old music before they changed it to the drum beat "you will conform to the establishment you slave" type music in preperation for the post 9/11 fascist globlist world

They were indeed magical days at the BBC. All this was 20/21 years ago, times have now changed with David Lowe taking over the various programme themes as one title around 2008, or before, the current beeps are from 2013, one day they might bring back George Fenton to compose.
