15% interests rates today would see the total annihilation of the mortgage market

John Mayor's government never really recovered, four and a half years later the Tories lost in a landslide with Labour gaining a majority of 179

How tired the Six O'Clock news titles look here, by 1992 they had been used for 8 years and would not be changed until the virtual look launched in 1993.

Just thinking the exact same thing. A total disconnect with the new look BBC1 of the time. I think the virtual look is still their 'classiest' look overall. Having said that, the 99 look (and especially the theme tune) are still holding up pretty well all things considered!

@@whatamalike The virtual look had the best music, with the newly recorded orchestral versions of the news themes by George Fenton. They were class.

The beginning of the end of John Major's government. It should of been a warning sign about the Euro. It also eventually sowed the seed for Brexit.

Labour supported the ERM as well.

It's interesting how the banks only charged 12% interest in response to interest rates hitting 15%. If that happened today, they'd probably charge 18%.

Sept. 18, 1992, LLNL physicists, engineers and scientists participated in Hunters Trophy, which would turn out to be the last underground nuclear test the Lab ever conducted. A moratorium soon followed, ending an era of underground testing for the Lab that had begun with the Rainier Event 35 years prior.19-Sept-2022 Operation Julin[1] was a group of 7 nuclear tests conducted by the United States in 1991-1992. These tests[note 1] followed the Operation Sculpin series, and were the last before negotiations began for the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.

ERM was akin to the Gold / Bullion standard which was used before the WW1 aka Great War began.

It seems to be a regular thing in British history. The conservatives get elected when the country gets bored of Labour, the conservatives then f**k up the country in everyway they can think of, and then Labour is brought back in to clear the mess up, and then when it has done, the public chucks them out very quickly.
