Tagle and Sackur are speaking from two different perspectives, to which once could not simply and readily agree upon. i agree that the Cardinal has some lapses in his way of answering. i also agree that Sackur brings to the fore some important and well-grounded realities that must be faced by the Catholic Church and the hierarchy. the beauty of this interview, however, does not come from one-sided sentiments. rather, this interview tickles and wakes the mind of people up in relation to the sensitive but nevertheless necessary issues.

I am half English, and half Filipino. I am definitely more English and far more westernised since I was raised the UK; but that would never be the way I'd choose to act to a cardinal. Clearly the interviewer said himself that there is no provision to law or divorce, but there is also the ability to annul a marriage, and things that are both lawful both of the land and in the eyes of God. This revealed one of the typical stereotypes to being British, snobby and stuck up. Unfortunately it went overboard on this interview without concern to the culture of the Philippines; two very culturally different countries.

Please, obey the Church moral norms: FEAR THE LORD ! PRAY TO THE BLESSED MOTHER! No divorce ( be kind to each other; don't injure or abuse; don't spend money for gambling nor for drinking. Try to improve or repair home) No contraception ( observe only calendar days) No abortion ( anytime) No trafficking! No drugs! Find jobs for the young and for neighbors ( help each other to find job and to keep it) Help your parents and family.

He is a straw man (the interviewer) who is willing to offend the cardinal. A journalist who represent the left at best. He was not asking question to get an answer but he already made a judgment call. His goal was to uphold his polemic nuances to portray the church as an insensitive church and make a claim that it was out of touch of the realities faced by the poor community. You are journalist so I assumed you have not done charity work. Maybe you're the one out of touch of what you have assumed.

@@fauxmanchu8094 I think you did not listen carefully to what the cardinal is saying. He maybe smiling, and may have stuttering voice, but he answered the questions, .. The interviewer intended to be sort of intimidating when asking the cardinal. Cardinal is soft spoken and the way he talks is very light.

Problem is, they know there is something wrong. they know that issues do exist, but their still full of talk.. no hard help has been done yet a part from preaches. not being okay with birth control is okay but stating that is wrong is another thing, kumbaga e kung di ka makakatulong wag ka na lang din mamerwisyo...

I'm a devout Catholic and I admire Cardinal Tagle very much but I'm quite disappointed on how he answered the questions about sexual abuse by clergy and the wealth of the diocese of manila. He seems unsure on how he would answer those sensitive questions.

Agree. It's actually embarrassing. Some of his answers were none sense at all. All opinions. No facts. Interviewer was even shocked by his nonsense answers. Then he was smiling like a boy who's trying to evade serious topics. He may be good at prepared sermons or speeches. But the real him just showed in the interview. Sorry to say this, but it's like he lacks intellect.

Not all popular are morals, morality is not a popularity contest. Right and wrong is not a people's choice.

I believe that the good Cardinal is really cautious towing the Church's teaching on the being responsible parents using the natural method with Christian principle and not giving in totally to the government sponsored family planning without Christian principle.

He is now the prefect of the evangelization of the peoples and a member of the Vatican's treasury. I am more curious to what actions he had planned in his ministry and also the answers from this interview that he would give now. 4 years ago, around the time this interview held, Tagle and other bishops were actively participating synods on the family (2015), for the youth (2018) and the pan-amazon (2019). We are exposed in depth about the underlying issues, presented with questions that are similar from this interview. I'm disappointed for a different reason. To be able to answer all of that on this limited amount of time is absurd and his answers are dissatisfactory. The synods are only the beginning and the dialogues from these type of gatherings are more fruitful than this fast-paced setting. But one thing I noticed are the counter statements where he does not diverts the subject. He would either recuse the idea of both himself and the questions of the interviewer or give insights to the abstract factors which are typical for a reformist, a scholar, and an evangelist. His behavior and candor that we saw here are in alignment to what he manifested in most of his talks and seminars.

It's religious people like this that makes me lean towards being an atheist...

Yes. True. If they really want to help, they can give their assets to the poor. Nobody is given money when they go to the church asking for help. It is the parishioners who donate money to the church instead. Money is always used for church renovations instead of giving to the poor.

What a lame answer... The reason why priests who commit crimes (raping or molesting women and young children ) are not brought to the courts is to protect the victim from shame! The victims are not the guilty here...why would they be ashamed to seek justice?

The 267th Pope will be Pope Ignatius (Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle) from Manila, Philippines. He will become the 5th Asian Pope after Peter the Apostle from Bethsaida Israel, Evaristus from Bethlehem Palestine, Anicetus from Homs Syria, Theodore I from Jerusalem Israel.

I am a Roman Catholic, but I do not totally agree with Roman Catholicism teachings. Much of which were to please the Roman emperors. And the church to my opinion is too materialistic like any other Italian then and now. Life is good, but tying yourself on beliefs that do not seem to make your life any better to me is not the way to go especially that life is so short. Be kind, honest and good to your fellow men and that should be alright.

If Jesus think that just being kind, honest and good to your fellow men is all we need and that should be alright, then why do you think He needed to build His Church? Why did He say "do this in remembrance of me", as he share bread (his body) and wine (blood) among His disciples. He could have just told His disciples to just teach being kind, honest and good, that for sure would have been much easier to compile and distribute to people instead of the Bible we currently have. Imagine a 3-5 pages Bible? "...tying yourself on beliefs that DO NOT seem to make your life any better" ?? Care to give an example? First of all, Cardinal is not a corrupt person nor a church leader. I would like to ask you one instance that he did that made you think he is corrupt. And if for you religion is an illusory happiness of people, well that's your opinion. It's a way of living and a way to express your faith in God, so there's nothing wrong about it. What's wrong is judging a person without personally knowing him.

Im a catholic i believe in god but i dont believe in priest, bishops etc.

"Shame on this priest..." He is living in the very lavish church, and by funded by the people. s the interviewer mentioned, " You can walk a mile from here and you'll see million and millions of Filipinos living in the poverty. Sorry, I can't stand the church or any religion. Religion, Money, Power and Politics are the reason why humanity are being ruined.

Madelyn Everett Unfortunately, my not so bright countrymen love their corrupt priests n church. They cannot think for themselves n live in a cocoon and la la land. No wonder the country is in a huge mess. I always laugh when I see huge, glittering churches everywhere in the Philippines while the poor live under the bridge with a dozen children. But the Filipinos see no irony in this. The rest of Asia think we are dumb!

The church being "funded by the people", sure, but people who belongs to the Catholic faith. If anyone has the right to complain it is us Catholics not any of you non Catholics, especially those who do not even believe in God. Those who don't contribute to the building of our churches or do not contribute to its outreach then don't make it your business to complain about how it distributes the money it collects. Oh well...nothing is new, I have no doubt that Jesus knew that the 1 Church He will establish will face persecution, otherwise He will not say "the gates of Hades will hold no dominion over it". So nothing is new, the Church has faced persecution since the first century to the present day, and will remain till His return.

I' ve watched this interview many times most especially when people have serious questions to some church social and moral teachings. This interview have a lot of things to say with regards to the questions on morality. For the record, those who question the millions that the church owns, i think the good cardinal answerd it well. The millions or billions that the church have, are not kept by one person or own by one person or not own by a bishop. This is owned by the church. Yes, the church have also engages in business but this engagement does not or did not to gain money for arrogance or luxury. The money the church gained in business was used to sustain and shoulder the pastoral ministries of the church like orphanages, charitable instituitions, schools, hospitals and apostolates. No one has supported us financially. Not like the government which annually they have budget allocated to finance their charitable institutions. And mind us, to help uplift the poor is not the first concern of the church. The church is a spiritual instituion. However, because of its social responsibility, the church takes the challenge to help the poor out in their dire situation by providing them for free or less accountablity in their respective life situation. With regards to contraception and abortion, these teachings are not barren or foolish. Look, if we are anger enough to search the dire effects of these methods suggested by the western countries which even to my surprise, they themselves gradually abondoned it. And now they are trying to plant this unrealistic idea to us. The church teaching reagrding this matter has stood up for centuries and it was proven many times that this teaching is accurately and deniably right. After all, thid teachung dearly hold by the church is actually the teaching of Christ, and we know christ will never be wrong!

Natural nag se Serbisyo ka sa Diyos at ang mga donation ay sa simbahan ng Diyos at lahat ng ginagamit ng mga Pari ay Pagaari ng Diyos na mayari ng simbahan.so wala kang karapatan para punahin yung kung ano ginagamit nila Dahil hindi nila ninanakaw yun. It is not the Church who is out of tune but the People who chooses not to follow Christ teachings through the Church who holds those teachings, but rather follow their own immoral ways to suit their lifestyle. The Church is the guardian of Christ teachings, it is the people that needs to change, not the Church. In my view Cardinal Tagle is being pulled both ways and in a lot of ways being pressured to conform with the secular ways of life. We pray that he remains faithful to the teachings of Christ our Lord. 🙏

Because he cannot answer objectively. All his answers were just based on his opinion. Even some are of no sense at all. Interviewer was shocked by some of his answers.

@tlinc.......you are barking on the wrong tree here...are you for real? Do you even know how many charitable organizations the Roman Catholic Church runs? Caritas' affiliated charity organizations are present in almost every country, assisting the elderly, in hospitals, in prison, in schools, in orphanages etc? Why not say that to the government,those who can actually give them the job, those who can actually fund them to go to skills workshop, those who can build housing for them? Not because we have nice churches or that the head of the RCC lives has nice accommodation, it is not his own, we as Catholics owns it, Cardinal Tagle can't sell it, bec it isn't his. Have you ever looked at where your gov't official lives? How many cars they have? How many properties they own? So why not direct your rants to them? How about you, would you sell your home and give all the profits to them? After when the money you gave them are all gone, then what, will you ask your parents to sell theirs too? If you really want a better country, vote for the people you want to lead this country, because every Filipino has that ability. Stop with your prejudice towards the RCC, stop persecuting Jesus.

Do you know what is the difference between a luxurious place and a lovely place? Sackur which i believed his first time coming there mistakenly said this large bishop's house which is actually an office building of the Archdiocese of Manila. Knowing Sackur for his bully tactics misdemeanor, and intimidating bias journalist, he'll make the statement "this is a bishop luxurious house" if he really see how grandeur the place is. I bet you haven't been in that place. The camera does not even lie how simple is the living area which are for visitors were chairs are not even comfortable sofas and the floor is not even made of granite tiles? Rude interviewer. He kept on cutting his interviewee. This is no way to interview a Prince of the Church. I am no fan of Cardinal Tagle but this biased interwee conducts himself like an uncouth pedestrian Protestant. The Cardinal's answers are lightweight though.

Charlie Morales We are the laughing stock of Asia cuz so-.called leaders in our institutions have low intellect! One Filipino archbishop told an American doctor who offered free vasectomies that it is good for the poor to suffer cuz their reward is in heaven. I was so embarrassed I wanted the floor to swallow me. This is what passes for discourse in my country. And the Filipinos will shout down all critics cuz they're only interested in promoting Filipino pride, whatever that is. Hopeless.

Even if the Cardinal answered the questions directly and strongly you will still hate him just because of his stand and maybe hate him more because of being rightful to thing he thinks more right

Either bishop tagle is grossly misinformed or he is just lying through his teeth. If he is not lying and he was working in the private sector, he would be lucky to rise beyond the position of an entry level clerk.

TAGLE'S ANSWERS SUCKS, its just so unconvincing. Tsk2. Does the church help or hinder development? After after watching this, id say it's no not helpful.

mahina ang argominto ni fr. tagle.. kasing hina ng pananaw at pamamalakad ng simbahan para protectahan ang mga mahihirap na kababaihan ,kabataan, at pamilya. .. dapat mag give way sya sa mga pari n may maganda at bukas n pananaw... tama nga si jesus makinig k sa misa nila pero wag mo silang gagayahin..

If you would closely listen to what the cardinal is saying, his arguments are rooted in the teachings of the church. He mentioned it multiple times, some statements given by other bishops or priests do not necessarily mean the same with how others would approach the matter. Infact he said he understood the mind setting of the bishop who said a specific statement that contraception is corruption. He would have used a different word he said. And yes the Church has an obligation to protect the people of faith but not to a point that it will become a government. It is the job of the Government. The church serves as a "consciousness" of the government where in, the church will speak whe. Morals and values and faith is at risk. Always remember that Church and state should go hand in hand in serving and leading the people both spiritually and politically.

Account for the crime of your priests. Stop lying.
