• TEJAS EXPRESS coaches ... -~-
From the Himalayas in the north to the Nilgiris in the south - for a hundred years these little trains have climbed through the clouds and into the wonderful world of Indian Hill Railways.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a romantic line, popular with honeymooners and driven by love and devotion as well as steam. It chugs through the south Indian jungle up to a hill station, once known as Snooty Ooty.
The current guard is Ivan. Married for twenty years, he is concerned about his friend Jenni, the ticket inspector, because he's still a bachelor - but Jenni has a secret.
In the engine shed, Shivani, the railway's first female diesel engineer, is working on a steam loco. She has to make it look its best, as in the year of filming, 1999, the railway celebrated its centenary. The high point is the Black Beauty competition to pick the best engine on the line, but rains and landslides threaten the proceedings and the tourist business. Will love win out in the end?

A magnificent coverage of not only the long history of these trains that have survived in the mountainous regions of India, but also an insight of the people who depend on the railways in this beautiful, yet difficult part of the sub-continent. The railways and the communities are all entwined, and together display a determination to succeed. And they accept their situation happily it seems. May they not succumb to the empty and treacherous lifestyles paraded as idealistic outside their paradisaic mountain home.
Public comments. God bless India. A country with unique and beautiful place. God bless the land of India. Hard work and dedication by Indian people by working together in unity.
This is a good stroll down memory lane. Been there seen that done that (Ooty and Coonorr) I rode in the cabin of a steam engine from Ernakulam South to Jolarpettai and had charge of the whistle chord as a five year old (1959). I drove a diesel engine from Bangarpet to Marikuppam. (1968))
Thank you for sharing this with all of us ! Cheers from California !
It's more than a simple documentary of Indian Railway. It touches your heart and soul.

What an incredible documentary ! Superb and lovely narattion, bgm, visuals , emotions ✨♥️
A beautiful documentary by the BBC. Trains are at the heart of the modern India history and a vital source of employment for countless 1000's of Indians. I have travelled many 1000's of km on India's railways and it nurtured a love of this fascinating country. The Nilgiri ride is just one of those more memorable occasions. Felt almost homesick watching this.
9:39, Just look at his burst of happiness! Simple and pure! To some of us in the hustle and bustle of the what they call the western society, could learn a thing or two from this!
From the mid to the late 1940,s on many occasions I travelled by this wonderful little train from the plains to my school in Ootacamund, and then back home for the holidays. This film brings back many very happy memories of Ooty and the train journey in those days. Visiting South India I travelled on the train around 18 years ago, and again 5 years ago, obviously a lot has changed but it was still a great experience.

i watch this only to hear the bgm.. such a mesmerising 1
It's nothing else than a news towards children and for us.
It was one of exciting and looking forward every time I know I was going to travel on those train. Journey up and down the mountain side take the train in beautiful post card pictures landscape with wildlife. Miss traveling by those train. It was back in early 1980. I'm from Malaysia and proud to say I was there not one time but few times.
Just beautiful.
The passion and the love of the job I that they show for the job they perform
A good enlightening documentary on what the the old steam engines of yesteryear still mean to those for whom the railways are not just a means to a livelihood but a passionate calling. I was surprised to note the casual and indifferent approach to the maintenance and development and more importantly, the safety aspect of both train and personnel; depending wholly on the love and dedication of the employees. I would liked to have known about the history of its conception and construction and the challenge of developing the special locomotive needed for this phenomenal project. These engines were designed and built by the Swiss if I recall
EVEN I FEEL THE SAME AS Mr. NATARAJAN WITH REGARDS TO THE STEAM ENGINES & THE ORIGINAL OLD WOOD COMPARTMENTS.
Beautiful beyond the dream, loved too much, poetic documentary thanks
Very Good Scenario, love it so much...

Awesome...Loved it😊😄
Mind blowing BGM At 50:13 and at 55:30
these true life stories make the whole series, I want to know now what happened to them. the scenery is so beautiful
This was a pretty interesting documentary video because it gives a nice backstory of how the Nilgri Mountain Railway was made, and this is the backstory that Ashima should've gotten in the Thomas & Friends series especially how Big World Big Adventures era wasted her chance to develop as a character, but thankfully the Tracks to Big Adventures series (which is a reboot to the Big World Big Adventures BTW) at least gave her some backstory of how she was created & how she ended up of where she was in the Great Race movie, and this video really inspired @ThomasTheorist & @ThomasFan2002 to create such a beautiful backstory for Ashima in the fan made series of Thomas & Friends, Tracks to Big Adventures.
mesmerized 💌
It's forced to cry
An awesome documentary.

Once again money can’t buy happiness. Hope we Indians can avoid this western trap of race for money. How pure and beautiful are the lives of these people in this documentary.

Why isn’t Shivani allowed to live in this colony with her family? Ivan has a family here, why can she not bring her family here?
