The film explores the life and music of Elvis Presley (Butler), seen through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Hanks). The story delves into the complex dynamic between Presley and Parker spanning over 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America. Central to that journey is one of the most significant and influential people in Elvis’s life, Priscilla Presley (Olivia DeJonge).
Starring alongside Hanks and Butler, award-winning theatre actress Helen Thomson (“Top of the Lake: China Girl,” “Rake”) plays Elvis’s mother, Gladys, Richard Roxburgh (“Moulin Rouge!” “Breath,” “Hacksaw Ridge”) portrays Elvis’s father, Vernon, and DeJonge (“The Visit,” “Stray Dolls”) plays Priscilla. Luke Bracey (“Hacksaw Ridge,” “Point Break”) plays Jerry Schilling, Natasha Bassett (“Hail, Caesar!”) plays Dixie Locke, David Wenham (“The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy, “Lion,” “300”) plays Hank Snow, Kelvin Harrison Jr. (“The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “The High Note”) plays B.B. King, Xavier Samuel (“Adore,” “Love & Friendship,” “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse”) plays Scotty Moore, and Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of the Dog”) plays Jimmie Rodgers Snow.
Also in the cast, Dacre Montgomery (“Stranger Things,” “The Broken Heart Gallery”) plays TV director Steve Binder, alongside Australian actors Leon Ford (“Gallipoli,” “The Pacific”) as Tom Diskin, Kate Mulvany (“The Great Gatsby,” “Hunters”) as Marion Keisker, Gareth Davies (“Peter Rabbit,” “Hunters”) as Bones Howe, Charles Grounds (“Crazy Rich Asians,” “Camp”) as Billy Smith, Josh McConville (“Fantasy Island”) as Sam Phillips, and Adam Dunn (“Home and Away”) as Bill Black.
To play additional iconic musical artists in the film, Luhrmann cast singer/songwriter Yola as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, model Alton Mason as Little Richard, Austin, Texas native Gary Clark Jr. as Arthur Crudup, and artist Shonka Dukureh as Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton.
Oscar nominee Luhrmann (“The Great Gatsby,” “Moulin Rouge!”) directed from a screenplay by Baz Luhrmann & Sam Bromell and Baz Luhrmann & Craig Pearce and Jeremy Doner, story by Baz Luhrmann and Jeremy Doner. The film’s producers are Luhrmann, Oscar winner Catherine Martin (“The Great Gatsby,” “Moulin Rouge!”), Gail Berman, Patrick McCormick and Schuyler Weiss. Courtenay Valenti and Kevin McCormick executive produced.
The director’s behind-the-scenes creative team includes director of photography Mandy Walker (“Mulan,” “Australia”), Oscar-winning production designer and costume designer Catherine Martin (“The Great Gatsby,” “Moulin Rouge!”), production designer Karen Murphy (“A Star Is Born”), editors Matt Villa (“The Great Gatsby,” “Australia”) and Jonathan Redmond (“The Great Gatsby”), Oscar-nominated visual effects supervisor Thomas Wood (“Mad Max: Fury Road”), music supervisor Anton Monsted (“Australia,” “Moulin Rouge!”) and composer Elliott Wheeler (“The Get Down”).

I just love this movie. I've seen it 7 times now. Can't get enough of Elvis. I recommend everyone should see the film in the theater on the big screen. You don't have to be a Elvis fan to enjoy it. It's like taking a trip through the 50s, 60s, and 70s seeing it via Elvis.

Really excited for this. Butler's performance and the cinematography looks amazing. I just hope they don't stud the movie with contemporary pop music covers (like the one heard here in the background), I hope they use the songs in their original way, just maybe with Butler singing.

Austin Butler is singing the real songs for the young Elvis because of the way they were made in the 50's was problematic, he had vocal coaching to help with this and they released a trailer of him actually singing a bit and I was impressed, but the rest of the movie they used a mix of Elvis and Austin singing together for the rest. If you pop over to Warner on KZread they have all the trailers on there.

@@ChrisR_68 I think Butler does a great impersonation of Elvis and sounds and moves very much like him. I just hope they do not add any other unrelated contemporary pop music, because there is a little bit of that in the trailers. But otherwise it is great and I'll certainly go and see it at the first possible chance.

Crusty people commenting ,who don’t realize what the movie’s goal Is. It’s not all about Elvis life but much more. His achievements, goals, and hardships through racism, segregation , the black community, the blues, country music , gospel and hillbilly music. Political influences of the time. Churches of the time. Police threats of the time, the quite white generation who loved the blues. Plus and furthermore the myths, lies , generational hatred towards Elvis brought on by mostly millennials and generations that followed, through early rap artists that portrayed Presley as as a thief and racist. Hence starting a long debat of who Elvis was. Basically this is restoring the truth of who Elvis was through solid facts with honesty, lost interviews, long lost footage, archival footage. Introducing people who lived during the time and who knew the truth of what happened. This is done by Baz in a very ingenius way. His goal is to transport you back in time and to make audiences re live the era and actually feel the times as it was. Not as most people think it was. So I’d rather have an actor and a writer that captures Elvis essence, character, humanity and talent. Also his struggles, and the abuse he took for being a man who believed in his dream. Honestly the movie will bring justice and truth for everyone involved, not only Elvis. Everyone . So let them disagree and go see an poor Elvis impersonator mimicking him in an over exaggerated way like most past movies have done. And let them continue showing Elvis as a cartoonish, over exaggerated, addicted man full of demons and not worthy of any accolades. This is a movie about America through the life of Elvis. This is a movie about getting the story straight and not false assumptions of how things were. This is a movie for the younger people that where born after Presley died.

I am an old, but not so crusty! But if this film is anything like it looks to be shaping up to be, it's what I've been waiting for sooo long THE TRUTH! The truth about Elvis and what a great man and entertainer he was, about the turbulent times he lived in, and the huge struggles and hatred he endured throughout those years from all sides. And most importantly how he changed the world for the better but has received little acknowledgment or respect for it. The man was just too good and too big for this world, it destroyed him. When Lisa Marie said that Austin literally morphed in to her dad, and she said she was a wreck crying so hard that she fell into Baz Luhrmann’s arms to be helped out, then that was good enough for me. She also said it was the FIRST time that it was done “RIGHT”. No one knew him like Priscilla, Lisa and closest decades long friend and confidant Jerry Schilling, and if they say that Austin nailed the man he truly was, then he nailed it.👍👍

Hmm hears a thought. This movie is getting all these rave reviews about duplicating real events and how much research the director did in referencing such events. I wonder if he ever consulted with Billy Smith. He’s the only one still living (I think)who was there, he knows it all inside and out. If Billy was never consulted my guess is Priscilla who appears to be basking in all the attention when she wasn’t even around. After all she is in reality just another ex wife.

The general public don’t know who Billy Smith is but most know Pricilla (Jerry Is her best mate). $10,000000 for her approval is 10% of Warner’s Budget for the movie plus a small percentage. They should make a movie about the other guy she was with for longer than Elvis although their probably would be no financial gain for that movie...I realy hope the press do not bring up the bad things she has said in the past !!!

I don't mind other people singing Elvis' songs, particularly the guy whose actually playing him on screen (I think that's mandatory), but having other random singers do 2022 versions of his songs in a biopic just doesn't work and dates the film. A movie like this should be timeless. It's like A League of Their Own, a fantastic movie, having Madonna sing "This Used To Be My Playground" at the end. It just sounds like an early 90s pop ballad and it's a bit distracting when you're so into the flashback to the 40s and this world. If you're going to have covers of Elvis' songs, that's fine, but do them in the 1950s style. When you do them in a style that is popular today, it instantly carbon dates your film. That's why a lot of 80s movies about the 50s don't age well. Even a great series like The Wonder Years seems to go back and forth between 70s and 80s styles. Kevin Arnold looks like an 80s kid surrounded by bell bottoms and tie dye t shirts. That was passable because the series had so much charm and other things going for it, but a movie like this that is trying to be an authentic portrayal of Elvis' career didn't need the gimmick of modernizing his songs to the point of being distracting. The kids will find it cool...now. Then they'll grow up and they'll look at it like they will their graduation photos in 20 years.
