Battletech's Crab, the Star League's Medium Trooper of Choice!

Ойын-сауық

#Battletech #BattletechLore #Mechwarrior
Another customer request, the Crab is a great trooper, raider, guerilla fighter, infiltrator, commander and flanker. It's built simply, cheaply enough and is amazingly easy to repair (at least in its base configuration and setup).
Then people made it weird by making the Crab into something it wasn't, and keep going from there into making it something terrible with the 54-series.
Oh, and Clan Coyote used the Crab to make one of the first "secondary" omnimech with the Night Chanter too!

Absolutely solid combat machine. Two large lasers, no ammo. Good stuff. I'd definitely try to replace the lasers with a pair of Snub-Nose PPCs for a proper energy brawler/striker.

IF you can replace that Snub-Nose PPC without effort. It will be destroyed. Quite easy and cheap to find a Large laser or two, not so much with PPC, let alone special versions of it. If you have it and can afford to lose it sure, go for it. I'll give you that it's a pretty nice modification and makes the crab a better brawler.

in MW5, Crabs are on my list of go to mechs for any problem, and very high on it. in tabletop and mw5 i have used the crab to quickly kill assaults. it can tank a fair bit as it runs into position, especially if the rest of your lance is dealing with the assaults bodyguards. those large lasers can bore through the rear armor of most anything pretty quick. or, as i did in mw5... run up to an awesome using this strategy, and now inside effective range, melt the cockpit off with 2 alpha strikes

Great for long term campaigns, it can operate for an extended period without a supply line, and it can do a pretty good job in a couple of key roles.

It is armored enough, fast enough, has enough punch... Very few issues with the Crab in the long run.

  • @STzim

Thing with the crab is it just goes on. It just doesn't care about damage. Think I've replaced every part save the reactor... to me the idea is it'll go into battle like it's expendable. Just throw it in, it'll survive. Or at least can be repaired if you win. For me the Crab is the quintessential trooper. No fancy internals like an XL-Engine, no Ammo that can explode, no Weapons you can't afford to loose. These days just give me some extra armor rather than the light laser, double heat sinks and swap those large Lasers for some other energy weapons. Kinda have to, or find a way to disarm that stuck AC5 shell... nevermind though now I really need a replacement for at least one large Laser.

Really looking forward to this one! I've never played any of the Crabs but started running one a couple months ago I a 1st Succ War campaign. It's not hard hitting or flashy, but it works & is easy to keep running. I'm upgrading mine to double heat sinks which in & of itself will be a huge help.

Instead of the newest Crab, I'd go with something closer to the latest Starslayer upgrade. Improved Heavy Large Lasers in the arms, an ER Medium and Small Pulse in place of the original (Clan versions if you can), Ferro-Fibrous replaced with Endosteel (changes the amount of armor to 10.5 from 9 tons, but gives it a few more points to the torso), and 18 IS Double Heatsinks. Even had the space to toss in a Light Active Probe. It can fire its two main weapons and run for two turns without heat issues, and can swap out one of the Heavies for one or both of the secondary weapons and become heat neutral again. It uses only the standard 250 for durability.

This is at least the 4th video I've seen reporting on the Crab medium battlemech. Its very popular. Its variants are almost all energy boats but it's variants experIment with nearly every idea related to that. Some are close range, others long. You have jumping Crabs. You have blitz Crabs.

It's odd that the Coyotl is listed as the "first" omnimech, but yet when you look at it closer you will see that it very closely resembles the Mercury II (made by Clan Wolverine), which was incidentally taken by Clan Coyote in the wake of the supposed annihilation, it passed a moratorium period and then Clan Coyote basically renamed it.

  • @ChaosTicket

Ive liked the Crab ever since I used one in Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries. There the Heat Gauge never works right, but still the idea of a medium mech in 3025 with 2 relatively large medium range weapons is ideal. That its also fast for a medium mech of the era also helps. Upgrading it is so simple too, just use better versions of the same thing. Don't fix what is not broken. It's rarity is one of those odd things. Apparently the factories were just destroyed, so the Comguards had most of them.

Definitely one of my favorite mediums of all time. It's unfortunate that I have trouble finding a mini that I like. (I greatly prefer the MWO design to the CGL one but every MWO STL I've seen for it has a very unfortunate pose for magnetizing it for a torso twist. I know, first world problems. lol

In defense of the CRB-54, It’s clearly not trying to be the traditional trooper-type Crab. It moves really fast for a mech its size and can easily catch up to lighter targets, or harass energy boats with delicate heat curves… all while being speedy enough to reliably dodge incoming fire. My only complaint is that it is a mech clearly built for TSM; its flaws might have been much more palatable if it could deliver 20 point kicks after sprinting 16 hexes.

@@ProfessorHeyTeeEn Probably. Sometimes breaking the mold can yield some good results, especially if there’s clients willing to pay for it. It wouldn’t surprise me if it was a one-off build for a wealthy noble or elite mechwarrior that impressed some mech designer enough to try a limited production run.

Hmm... I'm a fan of producing cheaper and more durable designs compared to what is being built today. After your review, I've started considering the potential of a Crab using a standard 300 Fusion Engine, an Endo Steel skeleton, and double Heatsinks.
