"This will involve entering directories which you should not normally fiddle..." As a fairly computer-literate, but not computer-savvy person I was sitting there thinking, crap, better be super careful as I explore the unknown depths of my PC. Then I found out it was AppData, and I was like "Shit, is that all? With six-hundred-odd-something games on Steam I feel like I'm in there at least once a week having to fix some BS lol". For real though guys, don't go messing around in there if you don't know what you're looking for. I don't feel it's as scary a place as he's making it out to be (He's covering his own ass, and rightfully so, by making sure you know not to fuck with stuff you're not familiar with). But you can really mess shit up if you just delete stuff without knowing what it is. Great guide by the way; it's well-explained and easy to follow. As I said, I'm decently computer-literate (compared to the average person at least), especially when it comes to dealing with certain Steam issues. So I had already figured out the AppData folder needed deleted, but it was the save-games folder that I had been missing when I tried to reinstall it previously. Now that you showed me that my game is working great again! Thanks very much!

Thanks for the video. Just FYI, on my Windows 10 computer, the Harebrained Schemes directory had a space. I opened it up to check if Battletech was there, and it was.

thanks allot for this, I was having problems were it would stop after showing the Logo's of HBS Paradox and such, but then when the intro was supposed to happen it never did and I only had a black screen. So this is a blessing for me and I'm now reinstalling the game and lets hope it works :)

I greatly appreciate it when people like yourself take the time and effort to troubleshoot problems like this, and share their expertise with others. Thank you. So, while this is definitely very useful for dealing with all my potential future problems, it did not help my current problem. However, you clearly have the expertise that you might be able to help. I first played Battletech through Microsoft's Game Pass system. I had temporary ownership of the game, and it installed wherever Microsoft installs it. I never checked. I later purchased it on Steam because I wanted to own it for good. It has never once functioned properly on Steam, so I attempted a clean uninstall and reinstall using this method you've shown here. It didn't work. I suspect it is due to an unclean uninstall or some other issue from the original, separate Microsoft installation, but if so, I do not know where the registry keys and/or other files are stored for that installation, or why they interfere with each other if so. It's quite frustrating. Do you have any advice for me on that?

@@TheEdmon Reverting the game to the V1.2.1 Beta and then back again, per your advice in a different thread, worked. Appears that my purchase of the DLC when I switched to Steam caused this issue, as one of the DLCs was not included in the Game Pass deal.

thanks for this, loaded the mod loader to load the speed ups, and it slowed it down 10000X more than before.. back to the base game.. hope they add the fixes themselves some day and or open it up to the steam workshop

Thanks alot for this. Was using a mod which was leaving debree behind after uninstalling it and causing an error when the after mission salvage screen came up where it was not finding certain files which happened multiple times when uninstalling this specfic mod. Always fun to dig into the guts of the file system hunting stuff down. Used to this with the registry all the time thanks to my brother inlaw who is an IT so i knew what i could touch and what to avoid like the plague. Cheers Edmon and FOR THE COLONIES! ha ha ☕

If anyone gets "Error 0x80004005: Unspecified error" while trying to delete the folders (my "Harebrained Schemes" folder was in LocalLow), try restarting your computer. After I did so, the folder was gone. Thanks for these instructions! Bit off more than I could chew w/ RogueTech, so I'm going to go try BEX. (One day, RT, one day...!!! *shakes fist*)

Actually, you can have all hidden files revealed by checking the option "hidden items" under the view tab when using file explorer. That is the easiest way to have appdata show up on your file searches.

Really? It never used to be the case that this hidden folder would appear using any of the reveal hidden folders options in windows. Since it had a different flag "invisible" rather than hidden. There are a few folders in windows like this, you can see them in a command prompt or if you know the path but not otherwise. Maybe they changed it. Still, good to know :).

​@@AquilaGuard Appdata was always an "invisible" or "secret" folder. Revealing hidden files and folders would not show it. @@TheEdmon After a little googling it seems thats because older versions of windows had two separate toggles of "show hidden files" and "show protect system files". Appdata was listed as a protected system file. Now they just use one button to do both. *shrug At least its easier now. I think I've always had both checked for a long time so I've forgotten that they use to be separate. Memory goes with age.

Two and a half years later and HBS still has not fixed this or the memory leaks :(

For those who care, if you manage BattleTech using GOG Galaxy, the option to uninstall in Galaxy will do a clean uninstall if you select the option to remove save files :)

(am currently saving for a new one when my budget allows).i am an old tabletop gamer from back in the day, have played all the battletech games up to this point on pc and consoles...can hardly wait to play this one........question tho... would a person have to do this for all steam games or just this one?

@@TheEdmon they probably decided they've reached a point of diminishing returns. Mitch came across to me as a git'er done kinda guy when he was streaming this game.

So i did this process after uninstalling rouge tech created the infinite load issue. I,m still getting null reports from the Log mainly involving bad chassis designations for the stalker and banshee and now some random extra random code tidbits. I can ad the Log in an email or something but thats all i got.

Can you not just type " %appdata% " into the address bar and it will take you to .../USER/Appdata/Roaming, and then go up one level?

Yeah, you can. There are ways alternative ways to get there, I'm just sticking to one that is conceptually the simplist.

Easiest way of getting into appdata that I know of, in Windows 7, is to click Start, type %appdata%, hit Enter.

So from all the comments from this video and other forums, plus the crashes I've experienced, is this game never gonna get fixed?

Lots of people had lots of different issues. Game worked fine for me, personally.

So I've done as you said and deleted my HairbrainedSchemes folder in Appdata locallow and both the steam folder and and the common directory folder but I seem to still get the issue where i am caught in an infinite load screen.

Is this before or after the modtek part of this? Does the base game open? Then does the "w/modtek" bit open? Which part are you stuck at.

I used to have modtek but I deleted my Common folder and verified game cache to try and revert to a "fresh" state of the game sans modtek and mods.

I'm using windows 10, there are no hairbrained schemes folders in local, but there is one in locallow. And my only HBS folder DOES have a space in it, FYI.

Probably not the correct folder, leave it alone. The gog version of the game may uninstall cleanly by itself. I don't own it so I can't help you with it :(.

Yeah, it does on windows 10. You need to delete some reg entries as well. Check out my thread on the official paradox forums.

Not reading through 111 comments to see if this was mentioned but, at 6:29 that comment that there is no other way to get to the app data folder the first time is wrong. Go to the control panel, access files and folders options, and check/uncheck "show hidden files and folder" Can't remember the exact wording there, but anyway...."AppData" will now show up in your user directory. If you're like me, and have multiple steam folders on multiple HDs, and you've moved your libraries off your fancy SSD C drive....and as a result can't find the haribrained studios without the space directory....Just select This Pc/my computer (depending on you OS version) on the left and in the search bar type "Hairbrained" , sit back, wait a while, and it will show up in the search results. Your time will vary. I have 8 local drives and 2 giant mapped drives so for me...it took a while. For me it was under LocalLow. Just an fyi for folks new to this video. No offense intended to the OP who did a fantastic job here.

It depends on your OS, this is what is known as a "secret" folder. It won't show even if you go to folder options > Show hidden files and folders and tick that box. Though I hear that it is findable in windows 10 now. It never was in 7.

You should probably include removal of the “637090” folder from “.../SteamApps/downloading” folder, as well as any “depot_63709*” and “state_637090_*” files from previous installation attempts, as these will also interfere with any subsequent download attempts. Failure to do so will give the user a false “Corrupt Disk” error on installation attempt.

Interesting, your the first person to mention this and I've had pretty much a 99% success rate in fixing borked installs without this step (and the 1% turned out to have some other problem). However, that is interesting that those files are there. If there is extra mess then your absolutely right, we should remove it. Never had any report the error you describe, though. I shall have a deeper look into this and add a note in the various guides. Thanks for the post :)

TheEdmon You are right. I had followed your instructions, yet, when I attempted to reinstall from a Verify Files point, the download would start, then abort with the “Corrupt Disk” error. I knew immediately that this was off but ran a CHKDSK /F on the drive to verify. Afterwards, I attempted the reinstall again, and - bang - error again. That’s when I went looking for the real problem and discovered these files. As soon as I removed them, the reinstall went smoothly. Glad I could help.

No Hbs folder without space in the Appdata\local folder, but in my Appdat\locallow\Hairbrained Schemes folder is an Battletech folder, leave allone or delete? tried the "normal" uninstall and reinstall 5 times since the last Roguetech patch and game loops before the cinematic in the beginning :-/

How do you know it's a BattleTech folder? Are you using the steam or the GoG version of the game? In theory, any folder marked Hairbrained Schemes will be safe to delete, but I don't want anyone accidentally deleting their shadowrun games.

Well, it is called Battletech, that makes me, lets say, quite shure about that :D there is another subfolder called Dragonfall in that Hairbrained Schemes folder under locallow, what would be my SR folder I guess. But as you said in the comments here that it should be in the local folder I wanted to ask before I do something stupid xD On a Sidenote, I am using the Steam version

Hello Edmon, Quick question (I hope), I was installing the newest Rogue tech mod (4.4.19.) on a clean battletech when I got this message on my loading screen "'ModTek v0.7.0 ModTek Died See "Mods\.modtek\ModTek.log."" I believe Roguetech still requires version 1.4, did you switch to verison 1.4 in the beta's tab?

@@TheEdmon Thanks, That worked, (apparently when I reinstalled battletech it was reseted.

I'm used to open Appdata via %appdata% command. It transfers me into the \Appdata\Roaming folder. You can use the community asset bundle and the rouge tech core's uninstaller exe to uninstall the mods. After that it works properly, and ofc remove the save files. Btw Thank you for your Guides Edmon it was really usefull to installing Rougetech. I hope you're gona make another when Rougetech launches with Urban Warfare support aswell.

Glad to help. When this was made, Roguetech did not have an uninstaller, that said, files are left behind no matter what... unless you do the clean uninstall procedure. I am not sure the install will change with UW, but we shall see.

@@TheEdmon Yes i check the upload time, and i understand the problem you've explained. I just tought i'll write an update. I've removed rougetech becouse i think Rougetech may interfere with the new UW. Becosue tere are core gameplay changes and modders will need some to to adjust their mods.

After I checked the Config file, it said this was the user directory (The last one in the sequence after gameplay is the only file in there). I hope this works.

Anyone have this from GOG, and knows the other folders exact name ?

If you have other Harebrained games (like Shadowrun) you might accidentally delete those saves, too.

I actually didn't find a HarebrainedSchemes folder in my Local appdata, just the one with the space for the Shadowrun games. In LocalLow, I did find a HBS folder that has the Shadowrun games AND Battletech in it. Should I delete the Battletech folder in the HBS folder in LocalLow, or no? Either way, thank you for making this! I was baffled why the game seemed so unstable when I started playing it again last week after not playing for several months. I'd modded the game but had uninstalled so as to ensure everything would be fine, but I was getting slowdown and crashes. Now at least I have an idea of why! I've managed to locate and delete 637090 after uninstalling again, and hopefully that will do it. I'm not gonna mess with LocalLow unless I hear from you, but with any luck this will be enough!

Delete the Mods folder, except the ".Modtek" folder and ModTek.dll file.

Well I’ve been unable to get Battletech working for 2 weeks now as every time I try it doesn’t get to the Intro cinematic, I made it up to 7:30 ish and realised that I don’t even have the HBS folder. Fuck

You have the "local" folder though and there is game data in there?

One does not simply right click and uninstall BattleTech!

What i do with all games. Is use the program everything.Then search for the title and just delete everything.

Uninstallers usually delete associated registry entries and this can potentially cause problems with the system if you don't know what you are doing. Use it at your own risk ;)

But it's not a uninstaller.It just say here are files that have battle tech in the name.So i can find where everything is stored on my computer all those damn locations then you open that in windows and just right click delete the files.Like you normally would when you would physical go there through the windows explorer from this pc etc.But great guide that uninstalling in a correct thorough way would take this long damn.

Man, I'm really really p***** off! I simply am not able to get BT running again. Even after following your uninstall Guide it ends in a bootloop when trying to start a new game after reinstalling it! I'm afraid I have to bury this game forever.... :-(

There are text instructions available on the official forums and on steam, this is specifically the video guide. I will see if I can include the text here with all it's formatting, but it's a lot of text.

Glad it helped you. Just because I find this topic interesting, I would say that the people who like the conversational style of my guides are the ones that tend to subscribe/comment. Where as the ones that want a clean/bulletpoint/professional guide, also see subbing as "unnecessary" even though it really matters to content creators. I like to talk to people so it's a personal preference, but I see others doing this more and more and I think this is why. I just thought this was an interesting comment. I am actually in this for fun, as I am switching country and can't work at the moment, so I'm doing this instead :). Thanks again for commenting and viewing though ^^.

1:00 Nothing important at all. This is precisely why I despise video guides. Maybe I can help future souls by writing it done like it should've been done in the first place. 2:00 took a whole minute to say: "Library>Properties>Updates" untick "Enable Steam Cloud syncronization" 2:30 Navigate to Battletech directory, either through "Library>Properties>Local Files>Browse Local Files" or through the default file explorer in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\BATTLETECH" if you used default installation. Keep this window open. 4:12 Open new file explorer window. Navigate to the Battletech saves location. It should be something like "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[STEAM ID#]\637090" if you used the default install location. [STEAM ID#] should be a series of numbers, and there will be one for each steam account on the computer, most people will only have 1 [STEAM ID#]. Keep this window open. 7:45 Search Run or press Win+R for windows systems. Type "appdata" into the text field and press Enter. Inside there will be 3 files: "Local", "LocalLow", and "Roaming". This guide says to search under "Local" for a "Harebrained Schemes" folder, if you have multiple go into each "Harebrained Schemes" folder and look for the "BATTLETECH" folder. On my system (Windows 10), there was not a "Harebrained Schemes" folder in "Local", if such is the case it will be in "LocalLow". You should now be in either "C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\LocalLow\Harebrained Schemes" or "C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Harebrained Schemes", with [USERNAME] being the username you log into your computer with. Keep this window open. 8:48 Uninstall Battletech through Steam (Nearly 9 minutes to get this far. Absolutely WILD). Bring up the 3rd directory ("C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\LocalLow\Harebrained Schemes" or "C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Harebrained Schemes"). Delete the "BATTLETECH" folder within. Close the window. 8:56 Delete contents of 1st directory ("C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\BATTLETECH"). Close the window. 9:45 Delete contents of 2nd directory ("C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[STEAM ID#]\637090"). This will delete all of your save games doing this, but unfortunately these can also be the source of problems all their own, even if you only ever used the base game. Close the window. 10:12 Everything beyond this timestamp is completely useless.

It's a shame that so much effort went into this post and yet it's so hostile to people who most need a guide. You said the first minute was not important, but it explains to people why they need the guide. PDX support staff link people to this video, knowing that it will explain to the viewer why they can't simply uninstall the game normally and thus why this is necessary to follow all the steps. The official thread that links this guide has a similar write up, though it is considerably less hostile than yours. The guide is paced so that someone can follow along, with any level of skill or computer swiftness, without needing to pause and rewind. The wordiness is deliberate to create that space. Once again, done with those who have the most basic level of skill in mind. Not everyone arrives at this video, looking for a 3 minute, fast and very technical explaination that just covers the 3 directories you need to delete and the regedit. I could make that, but it would only help those who least need the help. How something "should have been done" is totally different based on the audience. 11 years as a senior computer engineer myself, how I explain something changes totally when explaining to junior engineers versus explaining to the customer services department. Of course, you can't know the audience on youtube, so the question is who needs the most help of those two? Anyway, thank you for your effort anyway, which I would have pinned if not for being so confrontational.
