Something to keep in mind for this scene: This is the first time anyone on this ship has ever seen a modern Cylon centurion. Hell, most of them haven't even seen a centurion in their entire lives. Only Tigh, Adama and the older crewmembers would have been alive to see them during the First War. For everyone else they've only seen pictures of centurions and now their greatest boogyman is on the other end of the dark spooky hallway running towards them to rip them to shreads.

Imagine what's going on with the rest of the Fleet during this. You jump away only to find out the Galactica, your only protector, isn't with you. When it finally does show up, it loses power and the last communication you hear from it is to not approach or render aid before it finally goes completely dark.

But it makes sense. Why would the Cylons build warriors that can't stand up to human small arms? Humans have weight limits on the weapons that they can conveniently carry, but Cylon warriors can carry quite a bit of weapons, ammo and armor. Making robotic troops with paper thin armor that the enemy can easily defeat is pointless.

@@robertmartin9029 Now that was the thing that struck me about BSG 2003---the cylons were so damned deadly. Not just the grunts but the raiders. You got the feeling the old girl would run out of pilots and marines/security troops in short order. They certainly weren't the 'cannon fodder' from the 1978 series.

I'm pretty sure that the cylons are not invulnerable to small arms fire particularly from rifles (which makes sense). Eventually a weak spot will be damaged or rounds will hit the same spot twice or more in a row thus allowing penetration. I think in this scene they meant that rockets are the only thing guaranteed to reliably kill a cylon centurion in one shot.

I like Apollo’s high-pitched wheezing. It gives the feeling of adrenaline that overwhelms fashion sense.

Having been at war with the cylons before, the military should have made large caliber, armor piercing ammunition standard issue.

They already do. There are many scenes of colonials mowing-down the older "toaster" model of centurion. However, (in anticipation of colonials using AP rounds) the newer centurions have tougher armor to counter this.

They havent seen the newest models of Cylons until now. They prepared to fight the older ones and we see in Razor that they cant destroy the older models rather well but the cylons upgraded their centurions. Remember the cylons had infiltrated basically the entire structure of the colonial military and society. They knew exactly what the colonials were doing all the time and send those information home so they could prepare for it. While the colonials had basically no information what the cylons were doing for 40 years (and their one attempt to send a stealth ship was an utter fiasco) the cylons had basically fulla ccess to what the colonials were doing appart from military high command. I doubt it would be hard to get a cylon infiltarator into the colonial marines as a basic recruit and learn how they were trained to fight cylons.

These centurions have better armor than the standard ones. They are darker instead of chromed out. It makes sense as well, if they only have the resources to make a few of the more armored ones, boarding action where you know they are against bad odds is the best place to put them.

I always imagine this as a glimpse of what it would be like inside those unfortunate battlestars at the colonies. Everyone doing their job and suddenly... darkness, silence, confusion, people running around with torches trying to figure out what's wrong... then nukes hit.

They could have used magboots. Making some objects (and crew) floating around would be a nice touch... But alas, the budged was the villain. Either way, a tense scene!

@@emersonalencarjunior8291 Even magboots its different.. you walk very different because your feet are getting stuck to metal surfaces but the rest of you is weightless.. your arms tend to float up.. hair floats up.. every objetct not secure will float up.. blood forms spheres and float up. The Expanse uses magboots heavily to save budget in zero G enviroments and even they are a bit too forced some times (people walking too naturally arround).. tought they do take the effort of putting the magboot sound effect and some actos do try to have their arms lifted up or hold to stuff

@@sparrowlt Zero G enviroments are a pain to reproduce without making it akwardly dumb sometimes. And very budget restrictive too. But I could imagine some centurions crawling on the walls using them to gain momentum and reaching some of the floating crew members just o slash them to death. Easy kills. And new camera angles could had been explored as were the Expanse serie. I think Galactica faux gravity is linked to a secondary, emergencial power source with lots of redundancies. No G, less performatic will the battlestar's crew operate, especially during in combat situations.

One thing that's always bugged me is that this is the only episode where explosive rounds are necessary to kill a centurion, any other time both before and after this normal rounds do the job just fine.

I think the explanation was that these models were created specifically for boarding, meaning thicker armor to help them survive a potential crash landing as well as any armed resistance they encountered along the way.

@@Mobius_118 Not exactly a model that could be mass-produced. The power demands alone would limit them. These are definitely specialized models as opposed to those that would be used in standard infantry warfare. It's entirely possible that by the time Lee&Co finally took these monsters down, they likely had less than an hour of operational power left anyway. But many lives can still be taken in less than an hour. In the scenes at the end, you can see one centurion actually push past another. Like it was rather anxious to finish its mission before shutdown.

It was confirmed in the series that theses were armor renforced centurions meant to be a "special unit" that could withstand regular bullets.

I think in the later episodes they were slinging rifle rounds at them though. A pistol might need the underslung mini-grenades, but a steel or tungsten cored rifle bullet probably will just end up cutting right through after a few hits.

Lee was annoying and whiny from time to time, but when he needed to be a badass he always seemed to manage it. Headshot, reload, headshot. Headshot, reload, headshot.

yes he was annoying sometimes but most of the time he is really a badass like in miniseries he lost his wing and continued the fight and takeout a cylon raider, in first time of command Pegasus he almost takeout a basestar just right there and only commander knows how the mercury class battlestar works. not even mentioning the tylium asteroid

This episode is so suspenseful

Where's a Clone Trooper when you need one? Centurions in this series are about as scary as the Super Battle Droids in the game Star Wars: Republic Commando. You pretty much need explosive rounds for them, too.

Good detail in that all of Lee's shots were either on the head or near the neck. He's a good shot.

Love the thumbnail, looks like he's saying that with the Cylon already on the bridge, ready to tap his shoulder so he notices them

To this date, I have no idea how Colonial marines fight these terminators with just flakvest and some firearms. You need exoskeleton and kinetic weapons, something out of the ordinary imo

The writers were always so inconsistent with how strong the Centurions are. Back here in season 2 they were practically unstoppable without explosives whilst by the time you get to the finale the Colonials are able to hold off whole platoons of them boarding Galactica and send in a few teams of marines and friendly Centurions to rescue Hera......

@emperorclaudius5499 Yeah but by that time they had experience with them, heavier weapons ( here they only have standard assault rifles and pistols. when they faced off with them on the cylon’s home world they were carrying heavy machine guns). And the rebels cylons knowledge of the centurion’s chassis and of its weak points on it.

As a general rule, you don't want to be in front of a Cylon at the time someone else is blowing off its head from behind - think of where the debris are likely to go.

after that,i would have installed hammers at frames,so next time i could play the drums and tell the ship,cylons are on board. some batteriepowered sirens would have worked as well. or trillerwistles, or shouting "intruder alert" through all th ecorridors all the time.

From my understanding, Basestars do not carry as much weaponry as Battlestars which are equipped with nukes, gun batteries, and Vipers. The Cylons may not have had a chance to get close to a Battlestar. The only reason why the Raider was able to board was because it crash landed. A Basestar’s main weapons are the Raiders and nukes. I think that’s why the Cylons had to disable the Colonial fleet during the Fall... otherwise, they would have been destroyed.

Spaceborne, insterstellar society of machines has access to what is for all intents and purposes infinite supply of energy and resources and has machines capable of working 24/7. They could outbuild and outmatch colonies in short order, not to mention send small offshot deep into galaxy as contingency. That is also what made ending so stupid - after 150.000 years intelligent, sentient, interstellar capable machines would become easily K-1 / K-2 civilisation.

As a US Marine we were trained in boarding ships. Unlike Captain America we didn’t carry shields.

Watch 2:05 to 2:12 again and tell me Centurions don't feel the emotion of "Rage"!

Actually, before the First Cylon War, many centurions were spotted attending church services that only serve one god, which could be the Christian god. Taking that into equation, it wouldn't be too hard to believe some colonials believed in Christianity.

Yeah, should be. While there was monotheism in the Colonies (see Caprica Series, Soldiers of The One, Monad Church, etc.), it was not the Christian faith and there was no Jesus.

If they know the normal rounds do nothing then why don't they switch to armour-piercing rounds? And would a shotgun be more effective? Do they not carry AP rounds or something? On a different note, this is a good scene, the casual celebration of the rookie pilots and then the terror a single Cylon could unleash. The temporary CO we see, who says "We've been boarded", I feel like we don't see him enough. Wasn't he the launch control officer?

AP rounds, inside a spaceship in space, seems like a bad idea as even assuming the outer hull is impervious to stray AP rounds likely most of what is inside that hull is not.

The temp CO is Captain Kelly, very capable but we only see him in some episodes, he was one of the officers who rebelled later in the series ( as per another post here ) but came back to Adama and the “good guys” in time to release Adama and retake the CIC.

He's like the Air Boss of an Aircraft Carrier. He would be in charge of the flight deck and hangar bay operations, and maybe nearby space traffic (like the ATC tower at the airport.) I can see him being third in command; his running an extremely important part of a carrier, and without it, it's no longer a carrier. Adama and Tigh commanded the ship, Apollo ran the Viper Squadrons, and Kelly ran the Flight and Hanger decks. Easy homie.

I have a better question; Why (in the same episode) were normal rounds killing Centurions when Helo was shooting them Back on Caprica? If it was part of their game they were playing with him, he was not dumb enough to be fooled by the Centurions just "playing dead". Could Helo and Athena have _lied_ about what really happened to them?

Standard colonial weapons seemed to do just fine against the older model Centurions seen late in the show. This was the first real contact of the Fleet with the new model Centurion, which probably caused some R&D to make standard ammo that could actually penetrate their armor in the future.

@@smokenova Something to remember is the civilian ships weren't exactly sitting on their hands waiting to find a new home. Many were refitted during the flight to handle more people, become hospital ships, as well as adapt to other needs that were no longer available with the colonies gone. One of those would have been fabrication and production of needed material, including firearms and new weapons as well. It wasn't just parts of Galactica that were revamped for those needs.

Shame they went for CGI cylons, they may have been more intimidating than the originals but it severely limited their use and application in the series. This was the reason they went for 'human' clones , the cool enemy just couldn't mix with them. It was short sighted.

Their standard arms seem to work against Centurions most of the time. The theory is that they didn't here because they're enhanced boarding models with tougher armor which is why explosive rounds to the head were the only thing that worked.

You're joking right? I've seen both shows, and the 1979 show is good, but these centurions make me sh*t bricks. The old ones are just stormtroopers that look like kitchen appliances.

I have to say this episode was a disappointment not enough action
