I was moved to tears by the last scene, Starbuck is sitting, despondent, all alone, no hope of survival... so sad. In the original show it happened several times, to him and to Apollo, that they were forced to land on some planet, but somehow made it back, so I could not understand - why not this time too? Even reading about the cancelled episode, many years later, cannot undo the sadness I feel when watching the episode.

I recently read that had the show not been cancelled there would have been another episode called Wheel Of Fire and in that episode Starbuck was supposed to be rescued by The Ship Of Lights and he would stay with the beings of light aboard it. If it had aired it would have given us all that happy ending we longed for.

Yes I agree to that I seen this film when I was young and now I'm still a young man at the age of 50 I still remember it now I'm a young man for my age 50 years old I don't look my age but I still remember this film when I was young I always liked Starbuck when he was in the film The A-Team as the one person that always scams people he is named face he is one of my favourite actors I think he was and I still think he was the star of that movie what what did happened to Starbuck at the end do not forget there is a ship ready to be used because the free remaining salons are dead that means there is a ship to be used I hope you like the movie it was one of the best 80s films ever I wish there was a better ending and longer you always spoil the movie from letting it be too short it should be longer from the time it came on at 7:00 to 8:00 I think it should have went off about 8:30 it could be suitable that where to find out what did happened to the baby when he found his father and we know the baby is the young lad did he find his dad Starbuck and did both them meet the mother I think a Hendon like that could have been the best ending

@@FormatorBlack Exactly. Initially conceived by Larson as ADAM’S ARK in 1967-68 which he developed at Universal Television with former STAR TREK producer Gene L. Coon. I guess Lucas was feeling jealous that he was going to be upstaged! Also he was unhappy with VFX supervisor John Dykstra’s involvement with his own company APOGEE, hiring many personnel who worked on A NEW HOPE.

+fawdown Well the episode where the Cylons landed on Earth in Halloween wasn't so bad. It wasn't really GOOD, but it was watchable. The funny thing is that this episode does something that the 2003 reboot never did, and that was make you feel for a Cylon without having to make them look human. I mean yeah they are humanoid to begin with, but they don't have human faces or asses.

This was the only episode of Galactica 1980 that was any good at all. Looking back on it almost 40 years later it seems hokey... they used to call these types of shows 'campy.' But as a die hard fan of the initial series, I loved this episode. This clip didn't show it, but earlier in the episode, Dr Zee told Adama that he had a dream of a great warrior...

The original series died a premature death far too soon. It felt like it really never had enough time to really get off the ground, but this couldnt last between the threat of legal disputes by Lucas and the expense of the original show taking its toll. I loved Starbuck and the crew, hated 1980 for taking all that away without solid explanation, only to be greeted with what felt like a solemn goodbye. This episode felt like not just the goodbye to a hero, but a goodbye to the legacy that could have been. Battlestar stuck around long enough to intrigue many fans, but i felt at least one more solid season would have solidified it as one of the great sci fi legends of the golden age of space TV. It had so much going for it, rough edges and all.

It was terrible. They had little to no budget, the network was cold to it, the writing was awful, and the stories were hokey at best. If the original show had been given the chance to go more than one season, it may very well have developed into something so much more interesting.

"Return of Starbuck" was originally conceived to be a pilot episode for Galactica 1980, according to some fan-lore. Starbuck having made the ultimate sacrifice dies but is rescued by the Beings of Light. Meanwhile, Apollo and the fleet find Earth and Starbuck appears as "John" on Terra to guide Apollo to set right on Earth what once went wrong. Richard Hatch declined the series and Dirk wasn't available at the beginning of the season. Don Bellasario was involved in this concept and ultimately ported the idea to become the cornerstone of a new NBC series, "Quantum Leap" When the Return of Starbuck was produced, Glen Larson already knew the series was cancelled. The creative team was trying to come up with an ending for the fans but also try new concepts for their future.

True. 1978 show had models and no computer graphics to rely on. Whatever anyone else says, man/woman progresses. Babylon5 was one of first to convince science fiction on TV was "profitable". People progressed, with their ideas and consciousness. The last Battle Star was light years ahead in script, acting, actors, etc. Wonder the next 20 years will bring? I have never understood why they didn't just make a continuation animated series like Star Trek did in the 70s...only not a Saturday morning cartoon with horrible graphics but a really cool CGI adult aimed show. After all it would be targeted at Gen X & Baby Boomers...oh wait TV only produces shows aimed at 18-35 year olds. I guess that explains that.

This scene, from an original serie 1980, shows for a new generation which those hasn't fear during cold war. Meaning on that time with USA and SSSR. Great thanks to Mr. Glenn. A. Larson who gave opportunities for the "new technology generation". No hurry, just listen.

Just watched the DVD of this - I remembered the episode as ending really abruptly, with (spoiler) Cmdr. Adama saying to Dr Zee, 'that child, was YOU!' - but now there's this stuff with them peering out of a porthole, and saying 'the answer lies out there!', and a final shot of Starbuck on the planet. Are there two versions or did my child-mind self just scramble and edit things all those centuries ago?

The Universal Studios Tour was cool when Battlestar Galactica was included in the tour. Its been about 30 years when I last went. I was dissapointed because in the comercial they show the tank at the beggining of the tour firing a lazer. When you took the tour, there was only smoke.

Robinson Crusoe in space with a patched - together Cylon centurion as the mysterious " Man Friday ". It sure looks like it. I remember this ep. as 1 of the few that I liked from " Galactica 1980 ", & the jury - rigged spaceship / lifepod seems like a crude version of young Kal - El's space crib leaving Krypton. Unusual.

Yeah, and at the end of the series, I understand there was increasing pressure due to budget limitations, so that probably affected the writing as well. From what I understand, at first the intention was to make the series much longer running, and the quest for earth taking longer, but then in the 1980 series, they were suddenly there, and the action changed a lot. This episode was then more or less inserted as a flashback, but it's well possible the episode was originally intended much differently.

It was a good plan by Cy though to fake em out, although if he had mentioned it to Starbuck, they could have coordinated the attack better. Cy should have said the human is over there and then when they turned, he and Starbuck could have shot them in the back.
