I mean really the only way to show the war was this type of system where the soldier just dies and switches to another one. Because it absolutely looked like you are not expected to survive.

Small detail just shows how families could be lost during battle. The names for the last two soldier he plays as are named Clarence Point Coupee and Clinton Point Coupee born 1897 and 1899 respectively. I know these names and DOB are randomly generated when you die but seeing as how they share a last name and close birth years they could have been brothers. Am I looking too deep into this? Yes. But is it worth pointing out? Still yes.

Honestly, I think what makes this scary as a thematic introduction to the game is that despite the fact that you are still playing the traditional FPS hero, it's still not enough. You still have inhuman pain tolerance, you still have regeneration, you can still have mechanical perfection in your gun use despite having been shot, filled with shrapnel, set on fire, etc... and it still isn't enough because they took off the seemingly innocuous things like no traps that you have no way of predicting killing you if it isn't part of the plot. I think that makes it scarier than had they just made it 'one shot you die' and shut off the HUD and everything. The idea that put in a "real" situation, the power fantasy of the FPS would only delay the inevitable and still won't be enough to save you from getting randomly killed off. As far as a way to get it into the player's heads just how brutal the combat of WWI was within the limits they could just because of the medium, that's probably the most effective way to do it: to use the traditional tropes of the genre to *enhance* how terrifying it is despite using them straight.

It is as perfect for a VIDEO GAME. If you put all those mechanics in a video game, no one would be able to play it. Every few seconds after spawning you would just die. And let me remind you that , it is still a video game. Those mechanics are that movies and real life are. If you switch those then people would hate both movies and video games for how unrealistic the movies are an how impossible are the video games..

Fun fact: americans considered black troops useless and good for nothing, they sent them with the french troops, warning french commanders about this. French commanders mostly didn't listen and let them fight along side them. They were right to do so, germans called them the "hellfighters", and the french respected their bravery a lot.

Yeah artillery kills you which brings up a good view on the war. You could fight as hard as possible, but the average soldier could do nothing against artillery and mortars.

Every character up until the last one is forced to die. First part: If you live long enough, artillery wipes out the position killing you and everyone around you. 2nd part: Church will get more and more overrun until you die. Tank part: Set path, you die no matter what. Last part: I think they make you die at least 4 times before you get to the black character you see in the beginning.

It's not meant to be relatable, you see them die like they're nothing, one by one, they are from all different kind of countries and aren't you, they lived horrors far beyond all you could ever imagine, it humanizes them with a name, a voice, and a birthday, then immediately kills them. That's what the game tries to make the player feel in the prologue, the Great War was hell and soldiers weren't expected to survive
