This was a hard decision, but I went with a Toyota Highlander XLE. After 10000 miles, I absolutely love this vehicle. Everything is just well made, and I expect this vehicle to last a long time. I do wish the 3rd row had a little more room.

Highlander is probably the better vehicle overall, but the Telluride is better executed in terms of design, space and features.

Thanks for the review! I really appreciate your insight. For me, I originally purchased a Highlander 2019 Hybrid Platinum edition. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the car. It didn't sing like my Audi Q5, but it was "nice". (I needed a third row, so my Q5 had to go.) But I have to say, I was very disappointed in the gas mileage. My Audi (a TDI), got 35 on the freeway, had 6 cylinders, and lots of pep. The 2019 Highlander had 6 cylinders, was ostensibly a hybrid, but I found myself struggling to get 30 on the freeway, and sometimes as low as 18 in the city. I decided I had to get rid of the 2019 Highlander hybrid, even though I had owned it less than 6 months. Great gas mileage and AWD is a HUGE issue for me. I have to have both. After test driving every 3rd row vehicle in Southern California (Ok... the Kia Telluride, the Hyundai Palisade, the Honda Pilot, at least a dozen times), I went ahead and bit the bullet 6 months AFTER I bought the 2019 Highlander and upgraded to the 2020 Highlander Hybrid Limited. (I opted for the Limited vs the Platinum because I wanted a bench seat for the second row - 4 kids and guests, it works.) I am MUCH happier, getting the mileage I expected (a little under 1000 miles on the engine, and I'm getting right at 34 MPG city and freeway). Things to think about: from a point of view of styling, I prefer the exterior of the Telluride followed by the Palisade, then the Highlander followed by the Pilot. I like the 3rd row of all other vehicles more than I like the Highlander. (But, hey... I'm not sitting back there - my kids are... When they are old enough, they can buy their own cars if the ride gets cramped.) Behind the 3rd row, the cargo space is also tighter than the other three, but negligibly. And it's better than the 2019 Highlander. My two border collies can sit in the back no problem at all. They couldn't in the 2019 Highlander. As far as the interior goes, I like the Highlander, Palisade and Telluride equally. Though, I will say, I find the layout of the gadgetry more intuitive on the Telluride and Palisade. I do like the heated and cooled seats (the Audi had heated), but the cooled seats still aren't a deal breaker for me. I much preferred the center console storage in the 2019 Highlander to the 2020. The charging pad is always in the way, and it's more cramped. Watching your video, I realized one thing about the Highlander vs the Telluride. I had a hitch put on the vehicle. After I put the hitch on the Highlander, I found out opening the back gate with your foot no longer works - kind of a bummer. (I also miss the back window of the 2019 Highlander that opens independently of the back gate.) That the Telluride works with a hitch... I'm jealous, but not enough to jump ship. I find the amenities nice, the sound system fine (I'm not a fan of booming base - the Highlander JVC system really likes bass), the engine powerful enough (if you're looking to dart in front of traffic or to burn rubber, this isn't the car for you) but a little whiny on the uphills (I commute between Los Angeles and Lake Arrowhead). The ride is quiet and smooth overall, but it doesn't hug the road like my Audi Q5 did. All said and done, had the Telluride or the Palisade been comparable on gas mileage, with the extended warranty and styling, I would have purchased either one. And finally, the Honda Pilot - it is a GREAT car. It lost me because it didn't have as premium a feel as the Highlander, the Telluride or the Palisade, and it had mileage comparable with both. But from a context of interior space, I found it to be the best designed of the four: it REALLY works for a large family.

Jeff, Great video. I am an avid Honda and Toyota fan. I haven't owned a Toyota yet. My wife and I bought a new 2004 Honda Accord EX in Nov. of 2003 and have driven it for almost 17 years. I have a 2009 Honda Civic Si that I bought new in March of 2009. My kids are now 10, and 11. I am 6'4" and my son is already 5'6" at age 11. We desired an SUV and have been looking at them for a few years. Sadly, the Honda Pilot's transmission issues quickly ruled it out for us. We buy new with the intention of driving 15-20 years. I immediately assumed we would purchase a Highlander at that point. We waited for the new model in order to get Apple and Android car play. We certainly didn't want to be stuck without that for the next however many years. I heard about the KIA Telluride in the process of our deeper research. I was a big doubter, as we typically buy and look into cars with longevity. I knew KIA had a great warranty, but from what I knew of them in the past it was a good thing because you would need it. As I continued to look into it I found out that most if not all of their vehicles are very reliable now. As you can probably already tell. We went with the Telluride. Here are a few reasons why we went with the Telluride, in no particular order. The following reasons were very practical for us and our decision. They obviously wouldn't apply to everyone, but might be helpful for those in a similar situation as us. 1. Third Row: The third row of the Telluride is very spacious for a car of its size. We wanted a vehicle that we could comfortably take our kids on trips in along with their friends, now and in the years to come. When I sat in the third row of the highlander, I just didn't fit. The sales rep thought he would help me by reclining the third row, but that just folded my head to my chest as my head pivoted on the ceiling of the vehicle since it had no where to go. 2. Drivers Seat: My wife is 5'4" in comparison to my 6"4. We needed a vehicle that we could both be comfortably seated in while driving, especially on our long road trips. The Highlander is very comfortable, but the seat can not be lowered. Because of that, I would be uncomfortable at times. For example, I would have to lean forward at stop lights or stop far enough back in order to see what I needed to. I can lower the seat of the Telluride to a comfortable position that allows me to see what I should be able to without having to adjust my body or drive in away that allows me to compensate for my inability to see what I should naturally be able to. 3. Tow Package: You can't get a TOW package with the top end Highlander. This is one area I believe Toyota engineering really dropped the ball. Apparently, the self opening power lift gate sensors are in the way of it being able to work. You would think they could find out a way to make that work as KIA has managed to do so. For full disclosure, and comparison, here are a few things we lost out on going with the KIA Telluride. 1. Gas Mileage: The Highlander, based on Consumer Reports, gets better gas mileage than the Telluride. It's only 1 mile per gallon combined, but that adds up over 200,000 miles. The Telluride will take around an extra 433 gallons of gas over that period of time. Close to $1000 in gas depending on the price per gallon. 2: Maintenance Package: It would be nice if KIA would step up their game in this area. As you well know, Toyota offers a free 2 year maintenance package for their new vehicles. It covers the oil and filter change, along with the tire rotations over that period of time. That is a nice perk to an already great and very reliable line of vehicles. 3. Aesthetics: This new car was for my wife. She really liked the look of the Highlander. It is very aesthetically pleasing outside and in. The aerodynamics that help to contribute to the better gas mileage, and look in the eyes of some, are also the protagonist for the lack of head and shoulder room in the third row where the car quickly closes in on you. The 12.3 inch touchscreen and dash of the Highlander was more desirable for me and my wife based on first impression. The Telluride is very nice as well, but I would have to give the first impression nod to the larger screen and encompassing dash of the Highlander. There are many great things about both vehicles. For us, the KIA Telluride was the the no doubt purchase given our circumstances and desires.

The Telluride is impressive. In comparison, I feel the Telluride is more modern and up to date. Toyota seems to be relying on reliability and checking boxes. I like the size of Info center on the Highlander but the resolution is poor at best. Why not update to LCD at the very least? Don’t get me started on the piano black. Overall, Telluride looks like a complete package. I hope Toyota gives the Highlander a serious mid-cycle refresh.

An excellent quality comparison video Jeff! I do like the new Telluride in many ways! After all of your comparisons, me being a Toyota apprecianodo, I ultimately will have to go with the Highlander Platinum! As you pointed out on the Kia, it has many similar features as does the Highlander. I don't regret getting my first and second Camry! I definitely don't regret getting my 3rd Camry last year! Well done Jeff! Well done! I'll stick with Toyota. Mark in Iowa.

Telluride and palisade, their ride qualities far superior to Highlander. I leased 2020 Highlander hybrid platinum awd 2 months ago, there are quiet a few things I’m displeased with 1. Rear suspension, feels all spring and no damping at all, feels nothing like a suv that’s over $50,000. Very Poor suspension geometry set up makes a long drive very unpleasant 2. 1200w JBL audio system sounds so boomy and cheap, very low quality speakers, again false advertised, blinding people with “1200” watt audio system that does not have quality woofer and speaker to match with. 3. Relatively High wind noise and huge whistling noise coming from driver’s side view mirror when you travel at 70 mph or above. 4. Lane keep assist is very inaccurate and struggles a lot and you have to activate cruise control to use the lane centering assist. 5. Paint quality is so cheap it easily chips away. I already have several spots, and has nothing to do with road conditions( I live in the suburb area of Chicago all smooth pavement) Overall build quality of Toyota cars and suvs have declined over the past few years and it’s so obvious when you see Toyota’s recent financial statement. They actually gained way more profit in the recent years, probably by cutting cost in areas common people don’t see or haven’t had experiences in better cars to compare with My family was impressed with the design of the Highlander but became disappointed quickly after sitting in it for a while I’m stuck with this decision that I made, but everyone else can hopefully benefit from my experience so you can make a better decision with your hard earned money.

After being inside both the telluride and the Highlander, the kia feels way bigger and has more leg room in the third row. Third row leg room is more important because all the top line packages force you into captains chair which is the worst for a family vehicle. We're still behind in Australia and don't have the latest Highlander (Kluger) yet :(, but both the Kia and Toyota are due here early 2021. My only comment about Toyota generally, and they are trying to be better, is they take customer loyalty for granted and rely too heavily/too long on us forgoing a lack of features or higher quality finishes or more powerful engines for the sake of reliability and dependability and resale value. Keep up the great work and stay well from down under.

They’re both great cars. I do like the fact that on the telluride when you use the turn signal it shows you on your gauge cluster the blind spots with the cameras on the side view mirror. I rather have the Hyundai palisade which is the cousin of the telluride. It has electric 3rd row seats. And is a bit cheaper in price than telluride. Also, the speaker to talk to the back passengers similar to the Honda Odyssey. Highlander has an advantage though, it comes in a hybrid which is great. I believe 35 mpg combined. Which is great but, I’m not sure about towing capacity on it

Great review as always! Telluride may well be the better car but only time will tell (see how the reliability is for the next 10 years). There are two things keeping me away from it (1) unknown reliability (in the past Kias have been pretty average in that department); (2) lack of hybrid version. If I could look past these, I would opt for Hyundai Palisade which is both gorgeous (inside out) and luxorious. Anyways, Im officially jealous for anyone who owns a Highlander, Telluride or Palisade :)

Plus it can seat up to 8. Even the most expensive MDX still lacks a few features that you can get or are even standard on the Highlander - road sign assist - bicycle detection - night time pedestrian detection - lane tracing assist - smoother adaptive cruise - head up display - rear automatic braking - giant 12.3 in touchscreen - 10 in head up display - better instrument cluster - panoramic roof - adaptive self leveling headlights - digital rearview mirror

Kia has 6 years in a row #1 initial quality. Let’s end that argument there. Peter Schreyer (lead designer for Kia) won Motor Trends person of the year award. The Telluride won every single major award for best in class, and even car of the year and it isn’t even a car. Warranty is better, demand is higher. Toyota is pedestrian at this point.
