Hey, coming from a knife collector, most of these tools are carbon steels that rust very easily. Rust can be removed by soaking in vinegar, or using something like Sabitoru rust eraser. Rubbing them down with a thin coating of mineral oil will prevent rust too. Edit: Also, Thinner blade, harder steel gives you cleaner cuts and better edge retention, but it will be more brittle and fragile. That's the compromise. Maybe someday a company will be crazy enough to make nippers out of s35vn, but it probably wouldn't be worth it for a tool you can't really resharpen.

Even S35VN dulls. At the end of the day it is all about heat treating. Good material won't perform without proper heat treatment.

Considering you can't really sharpen these nippers, I vote we use ZDP-189 steel which will retain the edge for a lot longer but will be more prone to snapping if dropped

It's a type of stainless steel that certain Japanese chef knives are made from, in general this steel is expensive but has great properties that allows the steel to retain the cutting edge but is more brittle than softer stainless and some carbon steels (zdp has a HRC of 60+). Since these knives made of ZDP are hard to sharpen, I feel like it would be a great material to make nippers from since they are difficult to sharpen as opposed to high carbon steels.

@@cancersillycrab oh its a knife, I feel dumb. I thought they were a type of nipper. However if they are that strong it would he nice to see some nippers, especially godhands to try and use this material for a more sturdy nipper

Nippers will rust if you leave them in their package for too long because oil dry out and there are moisture trapped inside. (Sharper they are, easier to rust, because they contain more carbon) Take them out of the package and leave them in a well ventilated place, oil them once in a while, they can last for decades.

I left mine in the package actually for storage but I made the mistake of doing so, rusted sadly, I did however remove the rust. But I'm gonna move them to a well ventilated space now, thanks for the tip, warning?

Just received my god hand spn120 nippers from newtypehq after watching your review. What a difference from my cheap pair! First time I used them I had to double check because I didn’t even feel them cut! Awesome pair of nippers. Got a few other supplies and 2 gundam kits as well and just completed the HG Barbatos and will assemble the Banshee norn tomorrow so I’m now a gundam collector. Thanks for the great review and keep making videos!

So, this is it, this is the video I was expecting. I have some gunpla and other plastic kits still on boxes, never had the courage to take them on because I just didn't knew what were the proper tools to cut the pieces. This is very enlightening. Good video Meli & THANKS for making me feel better ! Knowing an expert like you has broken SPN-120's reduces my shame, since I also broke my set of God Hand SPN-120 Nippers by accidentally dropping them on a plastic bin lid & one side broke clean off. They are the BEST Nippers & DO cut like a hot knife thorugh butter ... BUT best used only if the runner/plastic up to a certain diameter. Like you I use multiple pairs of Nippers - a cheap pair to remove the piece from the runner, then the SPN-120 for a final close cut before any sanding,. I actually found most cuts did not require sanding since the SPN-120's cut SO cleanly .... noice ! I also use a small chisel to pry open parts, because it is hardened steel & cheaper to replace/sharpen.

I currently use a nipper made by a local brand in our country called Alexan, which sells architecture and engineering tools. It's only about USD 2.25 if converted but it can do very good cuts.

I used a Citadel nipper after my Godhand one broke. I felt that nipper just don't matter as much. If I paint a kit, I need to sand the surface anyway. If I don't paint a kit, I use water with a glass filer to clear the remaining mark.

You are right. At the end of the day, they really don't matter.

I use some from Army Painter. They are for Wargame miniatures but they work great. I use an exacto blade to clean the cuts after the piece is free.

i read that mineral oil prevents rust, and brush some on my nippers every once and a while, they have gotten darker but not much rust and im in Hawaii and everything rusts. also keep them in a foam padded pencil box. ive been lucky and still on my first pair of spn 120s

Well Here is what i do : 1. using nipper cut connection point between the frame and the parts 2. using cutter to cute out the plastic connection tip on the parts 3. using filer to file out any remaining excessive on the parts 4. if necessary, use sand paper to smooth it out

Got the SPN-120 a while back. Of course I use the cheap nippers to cut out the parts but I use the Godhand ones to trim off the excess plastic... Cleanup is MUCH more easy thanks to them.

Nice comparison video ^_^ Me personally use the cheap nipper (I'm using the $12 godhand keroro) to cut the parts from the runner, and then use the godhand ultimate nipper for cleaning the remaining nub from the parts. For straight build it's really save time because less stress mark means less time for sanding, some parts doesn't even need to sand especially the white colored ones ^_^

So for someone who is dealing with economic problems you think I should get the entry grade Nippers or tamiya ? (actually just tell me something that's very durable but also on the cheat side and it'll last me a year or longer pls) ( I'm not planning to build too many model kits at the moment so now I only plan to build one mega size and 1 RG and 3 HG so far)

I looked into buying a set of the Godhands but was put off by the price (I only spend about 2 hours a week on the hobby) but then I saw Flory Models reviewing the DSPIAE ST-A 3.0 version and they are amazing! They come in a little presentation box (almost like jewellery :) and a little adjustment tool and instruction manual... long story short, they are very nice. At £28 ($37 US, inc shipping) they were a good deal for me :)

Those empty spaces at the back is somewhat unsettling. Nice video, informative.

How flush can the Godhands cut when the gates are not on the edge of a part, like on the first couple of parts you show? The only (generic) single bladed nipper I tried cuts clean, but can't cut flush to a part unless the gate is along the edge of a part.

I agree!!! The Godhand nippers are the best! I broke 2 of them between 2 weeks. 😂😂 But I learnt from that mistake. Now I have 3 spare ones. I bought alot because the shop I buy in said the production of these nippers are gonna be slow because of the covid-19 pandemic. But it's a good investment. Love these nippers

My very first pair of nippers were the blue bandai spirits entry nipper, and although they aren't anything fancy they work way better then simple wire cutters. Edit: normally I would of just assumed that the video was a bit blurry because my tablet is old and shitty.

Meli, i noticed you have less kit? Or you're organizing your kits? Anyways, whats the scale of that RX 78-2 behind you?

I have FISKARS nippers (wire cutters) that my wife used when she worked at a place that built circuit boards and they work great and I also have some that I bought at Walmart that come to a point Model 170 for $5.79 and a pair Dorman 90704 Micro wire cutter for $13.94 and they work just fine. I use the $5.79 more then the others.

A great product for rust is Flitz. It’s non-toxic and wont ruin most finishes. I use it on everything a have that made of metal. It didn’t even ruin stuff I had that was thinly plated.

has anyone tried lowering the gunpla plastic temperature, for example the freezer before cutting to lower the chance of stress mark occuring?

Do these cutters make a difference? Back in the day I just use regular ole scissors to cut out the pieces and shave the stubs with a box cutter lol

6:00 PN-120 does wonders with less stress-marks. 7:37 the SPN-120 are clean.

I’m almost sold on getting some God Hands. Though I clean every part with a X-acto, so I’m not sure my results will be much different. But maybe God Hands will speed up my process.

I use $3 dollar nippers then clean with combo of Xacto and sanding. More work but its a therapeutic process.

Great comparison video! I'd like to see what your thoughts are on other in-house nippers (like GundamPlanet's and/or USAGundamStore's in-house nippers)~

Funny story. I found nippers in craft store that were for jewelry that worked for cheaper entry level. It was the same no name production company as ones in hobby shop. Same size and shape but the packaging was different and cheaper at craft store. LOL!

I have been using the Dspiae 3.0 and have not had any issues.

I've got the 2.0 but I use the 2 cut method entry cut off runners leaving a couple of mm then use 2.0 to cut the nubs off

Waiting for mine to come. I've been building a lot lately and I'm getting tired of using my cheapo nippers and knife constantly. Having a decent set of nippers for some obvious nubs will be a God send.

I don’t have easy access to any God Hand nippers in our local shops in my country sadly. Though I have used Tamiya Sharp Pointed Side Cutter for plastic (slim jaw) item #74123 and the blades are thinner than the usual Tamiya side cutters... they work fine for me when I cut slow and leaves relatively ok clean cuts. Though when I cut fast would leave a more messier cut at times.

I just use cheap beginner ones, cut further back on the sprue and then cut the excess on the model back with a scapel, its way cheaper and generally even better than godhands.

Use a bean bag pillow on your desk, or a regular pillow, and nip with ease 😁 I have butterfingers too but haven’t used nippers yet. I just use my hands to snap pieces out of the runner and sprue and use my finger nails to remove the leftover nubs but now I’m thinking about investing in the God hand spn-120s 😃

Can Godhand nippers be used on all cuts or just the nub marks?

I have used two sort of god hand clones. Wave side cutter for plastic gate and the galaxy tools side cutter. both work great I think the galaxy tools cutter is sharper but has a clone of the god hand adjustment meaning they are harder for a novice to adjust.

Great video you should have shown your self cutting the pieces as for the rust on the blade metal dosen't have to get wet to rust you should use oil to keep then lubricated and they dont rust

the video is blurry when it's on you, but on close up it becomes clear and properly focused i wonder why.

opinion on the recent 1:1 gundam design?

Tools can do so much. Of course the more expensive tools will make it easier to get better results but you can still use even the more basic tools and get high quality results. Personally I have the Tamiya ones. I know they’re not the best but they do a good job IMO. With minimal additional work you can get great looking results. If you’re serious about GunPl then get at least the mid-tier tools and learn how to efficiently use them to get good results. But if you have the spare income then by all means feel free to splurge on the GodHand tools.

either go all out and get the best nipper or an decent one. buying nippers somewhere in the middle price range will be pretty much the same as the decent one. when i first started i used cheap 99 cent nippers and nail clippers to clean the nub. now getting back in the hobby a early this year i decided to get the god hand spn-120.

No Matter what nippers you use, You're always gonna get nubs. Its always best to sand all your nubs.

back when i use God hand there wasnt any pouch that came with it yet. in my experience i have broken 2 God hand.

Build up nippers are what you're supposed to use to pry pieces apart

@@HobbyVolt A month or two. They're pretty good at getting a pretty flush cut on flat surfaces but they're decidedly not immune to stress marks.

i think the humidity makes the nippers have some rust on them.

I would go with top God Hand nippers because of the time savings. The time we have to balance for this hobbie and others is not much.
